I'm very excited  :D :D :D  Tonight I am packing my bags for a 10 day trip to Amsterdam.  I am going for a work training course, but will have 3 days free there to explore and do my own thing.  I have never been to Europe before, so am really looking forward to it!  Better still, I get to fly business class, which I could never afford myself.  I will miss the little ones terribly though  :(

Any hints on things to see and do in Amsterdam??

Take to the canals. Avoid the red light district and the dope head cafés. Buy an I Amsterdam card for travelling about the city and discounts . Buddy up if possible.

Safe travels Karen.  It has been many many years since I was in Amsterdam.  Agree with Gert, re canal boats etc.

A visit to Anne Franks house is a must Karen.
We also did a day tour which took us to a small village (Edam?? I think :-)) and then visited some working windmills. It was great!
A night cruise on the canals was also fantastic.  :)
Have a wonderful trip.  ;D

Thanks for all the hints everyone - walking around the canals is definitely on the cards, as is a visit to Ann Franks's house and the Van Gough museum.  I think one of the conference dinners is on a canal boat in the evening, so that will be lovely too!  Gretchen, I checked out the Amsterdam card too, which looks like a great idea.  Thanks again!

Do they not think that would be distracting?  :P
