Main Dishes / Re: Drovers Potato Pie
« on: September 16, 2014, 12:27:14 pm »
I made a version of this tonight using leftover roast beef that I cut into thick slices and shredded in the TM.
I added lots of vegetables and gravy, and topped with the sliced potatoes and cheese. It was really tasty.
Thanks, Judy, for posting.

Hi Courton,
Our shitzu Maltese also started to have accidents around that age. I also put it down to old age/dogzheimers as she had always lasted all night without needing to go out. I tried to circumvent it by getting up to let her out as soon as I heard her sniffing about. It was like having a baby in the house again and being hyper alert to any noise!

When she "suddenly" became ill and I took her to the vet, he said she was in advanced heart failure, which would have been affecting her for some time but that it often goes unnoticed until the animal gets to crisis point. He pointed out that you wouldn't necessarily notice that a dog who already dozes for 19 hours a day, starts snoozing for an extra hour!
Our dog hadn't been to the vet for almost a year as her vaccinations were nearly due again when she died, and there had been no sign of heart problems at her previous visit, but her condition must have started within the next few months. If it had been picked up, she could have started medication to treat it. I wonder if this was part of her not being able to hold on, with all the extra fluid that is produced with heart failure, but if you have been to the vet they would obviously have checked an elderly dog for age related problems, but it might be worth an extra visit to make sure.

Chit Chat / Re: Forum Fest 2014 tentative attendee
« on: August 17, 2014, 04:36:20 pm »
Oooh, I am so jealous! Although I had put my name down as a tentative attendee, after my spontaneous holiday to the UK, (which is rapidly drawing to a close  :(), and the precarious job situation, I won't be able to join in. It is also very close to DD's Year 12 exams, so I will be needed to be a calming influence. :-))

I have long wanted to visit Tassie, and there would have been no better group of people to do it with, so I will just have to live vicariously through your reports!  :)

We had the honour of having Sue to tea yesterday.
It was such fun, and funny to think she grew up all around here and then moved to Australia 24 years ago.

We had lots of chats and eclairs (sadly not home made) and she very kindly brought me Quirky Jo's book, which I'd really really wanted so that made the visit even more exciting. I was reading it in bed last night.

The friendship and generosity on this forum is really very special.

Thanks Sue so much and I hope we meet again in due course.

The pleasure was all mine!
DJ and her husband are lovely people who made me feel so welcome. I was also given a gift, a beautiful book of recipes made using local ingredients. The photography in there is just stunning, and it means such a lot to me as it is a reminder of where I grew up. Plus, a home grown marrow (like a huge zucchini), which I am looking forward to roasting. I haven't had marrow for years!

DJ's home and garden are truly stunning, there has been such care and attention to detail, and their future B&B guests will be very lucky indeed.

Someone from the Forum just needs to win the lotto, so we can all have a Forumfest at DJ's, incorporating a working bee to finish off whatever needs to be done, and then another in Bali at Uni's villa!  :D

Thanks, everyone.
I am enjoying spending time with my dad, I wish I could have spent more time with my mum.
The weather here has been gorgeous, and we are eating well out of dad's garden.....loads of kidney beans, potatoes, lettuce and raspberries.

I can't help but feel a little trepidation for what will happen with the job situation when I get back, but I really need to go through my house like a dose of salts, so any free time will be spent productively!

Do you mean Mandjoogoordap Drive, CP? I thought it might be an indigenous name for Mandurah.

Well, I am on a very spontaneously booked holiday. I have been having a lot of stress at work over the last six months or so, and job security is very wobbly. What made it worse was that as in so many cases, those of us who the potential job cuts would affect would be the last to know. After discussions with DH, I decided to take the bull by the horns and give in my notice and come to the UK to spend some time with my Dad and my brother and his family. So here I am, enjoying gorgeous sunny days and long summer evenings.
Unfortunately, I couldn't bring DD, as she is in year 12 and can't afford the time off school. She has been very understanding, though, and as long as I spoil her rotten when I get back, she will forgive me. I suggested that if she got bored and lonely, she could do some study, but she assured me she would never get that bored and lonely!

I am enjoying spending time with Dad (Mum passed away nearly two years ago), and it is nice to be able to help with some jobs around the house.....we have wallpapered and laid Lino this week.
It's a bit daunting knowing that I have no job to go to when I get back, but I am trying to just have faith that something will turn up. There is no point in worrying about it while I am here, although I do sometimes wake up in a bit of a panic thinking "What have I done!"

Hi JenJan,
Have you got it set to lid closed? I think kneading is the only function where you need to do that, so it is easy to forget.

Hope it's that simple!
Sue

Hi, I am sue_purrb, and I am #34.
I love anything citrusy, so a key lime pie or lemon tart would get my vote.

Thank you for all your kind words, it really means a lot.
We had her for twelve and a half years, so she sort of grew up alongside the kids. We lost her suddenly, which was good for her as she didn't suffer, but hard for us as we didn't know she was ill. I keep thinking of all the treats I would have given her if I'd known her time was short.
I like to think of her in pet heaven, too, Gert. She's probably enjoying the respite from our cat, who used to torment her terribly!
The photo is of her reclining in her favourite spot......on the sofa next to me. She would get very disgruntled if one of the kids tried to move her and would make herself into a very heavy immovable object, way out of proportion to her size, and it would take immense effort to haul her out of the way!  :D

Love those cows.....the ones at the edges looking around look as though they are expecting to see someone come and collect those strangely behaving people and usher them away!

Nikkit, Chilli is absolutely gorgeous, you are in for some fun times ahead!
We lost our little dog a few weeks ago, and I'm not ready to consider another one yet, so it's lovely to see photos of such a beautiful pup.

Cape Arid is beautiful, Denise. We stayed in the DEC caravan park a few years ago in early October. We could walk down to the beach and sit on the rocks overlooking a whale nursery. We saw so many mother whales with their calves, it was just magical. I think they spend a few months there, so you might see the early arrivals.
The coastline is stunning, and I was in awe of the turquoise colours of the water and the white sand. Photographs really don't do it justice.
Have fun!

Chit Chat / Re: Eating out of pantry and freezer
« on: May 02, 2014, 07:00:37 am »
When I got my freezer, I asked Mr Google the best way to label things, and he gave very good advice........just use a roll of cheap masking tape and a permanent marker. The ink doesn't smudge, and the label sticks well, but then comes off easily and you don't need to mark your containers. If you fold one end over slightly it is easy to find your place on the roll, and also makes it simple to remove from the container.
I have been buying the cheap takeaway type containers from the supermarket, and freezing all our leftovers in meal portions so we have something quick and easy but still home made if there's no time to cook.
I have only had the freezer for a few months, but already wish I had bought the bigger model!  :-))
