Title: Stretching the Easiyo yogurt sachets
Post by: Brumington on May 04, 2012, 06:34:10 am
I have been doing this for ages and have had success every time.  One Easiyo sachet will make endless amounts of yogurt, not just the 1L it states.

Put four heaped desert spoons of the Easiyo sachet in the tub.
Add full cream milk powder until it reaches the 400ml level.  I've tried with skimmed but it doesn't work.
Add water to the 1L mark and shake.
Put in the flask with boiling water as normal.
The longer it's left the thicker it becomes.  I tend to make mine early in the morning and put in the fridge before I go to bed.  It's then ready for the morning.
The flavor goes through the yogurt too so if you have the strawberry sachet it will taste just as if you used the whole sachet as you are meant to!
Put a cup of the made yogurt aside in order to use as a starter next time.  Just make up to the 400 ml mark with powdered milk again.  I find when the flavor starts to disappear I will then start a brand new batch using the Easiyo sachet again.
I know some people have a problem with additives in milk powder but as far as I remember, the additive in Homebrand milk powder isn't too sinister.  I might be wrong though.
I reckon you could get about 20L of yogurt out of one sachet.....

Wow brumington, that would be a huge saving. As those packets of easyo are not cheap. Great tip.

Thanks for that one- I make a lot of yoghurt with Easiyo and hadn't thought about doing that.

I've just made a batch this afternoon Merlin so will see what it's like in the morning.  I used the low fat Greek sachet and will add some pureed fruit to it or cook with it.

How did it go judydawn? I hope it worked for you. Like I say, I've never had a failure with the full fat milk powder. Would love to be able to adapt it to make it with skim powder but so far haven't had any luck.

It turned out nice and thick Brumington.  In fact I just went and mixed some frozen mango puree with it and ate a bowlful, came in here and there was your posting.  Delicious.

how do you store the unused powder from the sachet?  I've read that once the sachet is open it ruins the cultures.  I tried it once and closed it off tight and also put it in an airtight container but when I used it it was no good.

I do always use 3 tablespoons of my previous batch to start the new batch though and haven't bought an easiyo sachet in ages.

I also bought strawberry essence and put a few teaspoons of that in if I want a strawberry flavour.

I vacuum seal the unused portion. Great tip about the strawberry essence. I'll have to give that a go.

ah, well that explains it why yours works!  Unfortunately I don't have a vacuum seal.  But something for others to keep in mind when trying to store an opened easiyo sachet.

This  (http://cheeselinks.com.au/faqyoghurt.html)is very interesting reading on the Cheeselinks site about using a subculture. Its why I decided to buy a starter.

The place where i first got the idea from (can't remember where but I think it was a baby website - belly belly perhaps?), they said that as long as you make sure to wrap it up really well it shouldn't kill the starter.  I didn't have the vacuum seal when I first started doing it and I had no problems either.  I wonder if it would help to freeze the unused sachet in portion sizes???

May I just ask what the benefits of making yoghurt in this Easiyo thing are? Why not just use TM?

Sorry if I'm a bit slow!!! :-))

I find it easier, quicker and guaranteed to work. I've tried two different TMX yogurts and neither worked plus I had to heat milk, wait for milk to reach certain temps etc, etc. My first did have a slight taste of  tikka curry paste too! With the Easiyo it takes me the amount of time to boil the kettle to fill the flask and however long it takes to put some powder in the container and shake it with some cold water from the tap!

Hmmm, interesting reading.  I can't remember the last time I bought a sachet and have just been using the culture from my previous batch of yoghurt.  I've been doing this for quite a while and I have had no problem with the consistency of my yoghurt.  But I never considered the thought that the good bacteria in it possibly does not exist anymore.  But if they didn't exist, then wouldn't my yoghurt be the wrong texture?

Amy, I already had an easiyo before I had my tmx, but from what I've read and from what my Mum has trialled with hers, the tmx yoghurt can be a bit hit and miss.

I thought that might be the case for a few people AliRo, I think I must be one of the very few people who hardly knows anything about the Easiyo :-)) The TM might be more hit and miss, but at least I know exactly what I am putting in it. I am a bit suspicious of these Easiyo sachets. Do you know what exactly is in them?

I think I must just have got lucky with my first batch of TM yoghurt. It came out perfectly for me :D

I don't actually use the easiyo sachets.  I just use a few tablespoons of yoghurt from my previous batch, 1 1/3 cups milk powder, 1/4 sugar (you could omit this, but we like ours a bit sweet), and a couple of teaspoons vanilla extract.  Then top up with water, shake well, and put in the thermos for 10-12 hours.  Easy peasy!

Ahhh, I see. Thanks AliRo :) It certainly does sound very easy!

Are the Easiyo things expensive? Do you think it would be worth me getting one? I eat a lot of yoghurt... :-))

About $20. Sometimes I spot them on special at the supermarket or Big W for $15.  I originally bought mine for 2 reasons.  One was that I knew exactly what was going into my yoghurt in terms of sugar.  And two was because of the cost.  The more expensive tubs of yoghurt are about $6-7 per litre.  A packet of milk powder is about $5 and will get you quite a few litres of yoghurt.

just tried this...the first lot with the new easyo and the milk powder worked perfectly
then for the 2nd batch i left a cup or so of the original batch, added the milk powder and just for luck one tablespoon of the easyo powder, left over night......but the yoghurt is now all runny?
do i have to throw this away, anything i can do to remedy it?
Title: Re: Stretching the Easiyo yogurt sachets
Post by: judydawn on June 11, 2012, 08:44:00 am
I'd just remove a bit of the liquid, add the 4 dessertspoons of easiyo powder and give it a good shake baf65, top up with as much liquid as you can and start the setting process again in the easiyo container.

I made another batch yesterday (my second) but I didn't use any of the previous batch from a week ago as I had added some mango puree to it and I wanted plain this time.  I hadn't vacuum sealed my packet so was wondering if it would still work - it did.

would leaving the yoghurt out of the fridge for almost a whole day and putting in and out of hot water in the thermos thingo make it nasty?
Title: Re: Stretching the Easiyo yogurt sachets
Post by: Brumington on June 11, 2012, 10:44:47 am
From what I've read, if the yogurt is ever runny it is not a complete waste and can be remedied just as judydawn has suggested.  Sometimes, the reason for the runny yogurt is due to the container not being as spotlessly clean as it looks.  Make sure to run it through a dishwasher or pour boiling hot water into it to sterilise it (don't do what I once did and pour boiling water in, screw the lid on and shake - this just causes a vacuum, makes the lid impossible to open and then scalds you when it eventually opens up!  Just pour it in and run it around the container if that makes sense. Easier to put through the dishwasher though).

cold water.  However in winter I usually put in warm or tepid water as I find it works better because of the cold weather.

I usually don't get around to making it until early afternoon then leave it on the bench until I am ready to turn the lights out - it could be anywhere between midnight and 1am before it goes in the fridge. Better if you can make it in the morning and refrigerate it before you go to bed Uni as a lot of people are not up that late.

I either make mine in the morning when I first wake up and put in the fridge just before going to bed (12 hours?) or make in the early afternoon and put in the fridge the following morning (18 hours?). I always just fill up with cold water from the tap.

I use Easiyo sachets or the Hansells ones (often cheaper and some good flavours). I have a couple of electric yogurt makers (one from an op shop here).  I usually put in some previously boiled water then top it up with filtered tap water, check the temp - blood warm to somewhat warmer (gets things going faster), then I add the powder. Pop it in machine, switch on and anywhere from 6-12 hours later it's done.

I have also used jars of 'proper' yogurt ( live yogurt no additives or flavouring) with both milk powder types, successfully.
If I use milk rather than powder I'll use UHT cartons of milk as they are already sterile saving me the job of having to scald and cool it

Lastly - and available from Mr Vitamins in Chatswood for about $16-$18 - is Natren yogurt starter culture. Then I'll use the UHT with this. It's very good and can give a non- acidic yogurt.
