Title: Recipe Review - Pizza Pockets - Lunch Box and After School Ideas
Post by: cookie1 on October 04, 2009, 03:32:48 am
Pizza Pockets
Lunch Box and After School Ideas  page 22
Tweaking Details
I made the recipe exactly as per the book. After making them I realised that any filling at all would be suitable to put in these. They could be made to use up leftovers of casseroles etc, or with fruit fillings. Would be very handy to have in the freezer for lunch boxes or that quick snack.

I would give these 4.5/5

I will definitely be making them again.

I can't picture a pizza pocket so if anyone makes these and can post a photo, I would appreciate it thanks.

Judy - the way I do them is just a disc of pizza dough folded over the fillings, a bit like an apple turnover I guess.

I make these all the time for the freezer for the girls lunchboxes.  They love them.  One batch of TMX dough makes 8 in my experience.  I will often make 2 batches of dough, use 1/4 for a pizza for us, the rest in to pockets, one each for the girls tea and the rest in the freezer.

Great and very economical.

I get it, you fill them before baking.  I thought you filled them afterwards for some stupid reason. :P :P

I must hang my head in shame yet again. I posted this early this morning and the book is Lunch Box and After School Ideas not Budget Busters. DD has been on the computer all day (it is hers!) doing some work for her Masters so I didn't have the heart to try and kick her off.

Oh well then, I have that recipe Cookie1 - didn't go looking when you said Budget Busters as I don't have that one. Now I can read it for myself.  Thanks for the correction. ;) ;)

JZ that one is lovely too. Our SAturday night special is pizza or something similar. Supposedly quick and easy bit in fact far from it.

Thanks for this post. Inspired by it, I made some plain pizza dough, filled four pockets with cheese and ham and baked them for 12 minutes in a hot oven. After they were cooled I placed them in the fridge. My son had one for breakfast and 2 for dinner after soup - heated in mw for a few seconds, my daughter took one for recess in school and both loved them! I have some dough left over so later today I will make some more!
THANKS

Ohhh, these would be so yummy with curry inside. I (pre TMX) used to make curry puffs but these would be even better!!

I think I need a bigger fridge lol :-))

Has anyone tried roasting the veggies &n then freezing them + the dough to compile the calzones later?  I generally do everything there & then from fresh because we don't have too much freezer space..............interested to know.

My theory was that I could prepare them and then freeze them uncooked, to cook straight from the freezer.  Does the theory sound correct?  I would never have thought of Calzone with sweet fillings, by the way - but once the idea was put in my head ... why not?!

Hoping to make some of these with the kids at the weekend.  Really MUST finalise the games/activities/food for DD's party.  Hope to goodness I'm not starting a bit of a meltdown after all  :(

I'd be confident of roasting and then freezing the veg - especially if you are going to reheat in calzone.

Tried these out over the weekend.  Very nice, easy and great for kids of all ages (aka adults too).

I turned the oven down as they were very brown on top, but still soft and spongy on the bottom, and cooked a little longer than suggested.  Looking forward to seeing how the frozen ones go too.  If good, I'll try and make lots for the freezer.

Made these tonight with sundried tomato pesto, roasted pumpkin/zucchini/onion, salami, marinated goats cheese, mozzarella, baby spinach & mushroom........was yummy, and will make again!
I needed to cook them in my oven at  220c for 20 minutes.

I made these for the first time tonight. Used some leftover roast lamb/feta mixture for some and ham/pineapple for the others.
Have frozen some unbaked ones for quick lunches.  We quite enjoyed them, certainly different.
