Title: Booked a demonstration!
Post by: LynnUK on June 08, 2012, 11:12:29 am
Greetings to all.

I am Lynn and live in the UK - but you have probably worked that one out already. ;D

I have a demonstration booked at the end of June and am seriously considering buying a Thermomix.

I live alone and wonder whether it is more a machine for families and whether it is too much of an indulgence for a lone widow?  I work and don't have masses of time but thought a Thermomix would encourage me to cook more from scratch instead of eating prepared food heated in the microwave.

Any thoughts/advice would be welcomed.

Are you kidding Lynn? You are gunna go nuts for this machine. Opens up a whole new world of interest for you. No more lone widow for you but a  very desirable friend when you start cooking  and have to pass on all your excess and experiments with friends and neighbours.

Oh wait maybe that is why all my friends and neighbours have now moved away.

Just buy it and enjoy.

Hi Lynn, welcome to the forum. You will not regret buying a TMX for many reasons, some of which have already been given.  It may sound silly but living alone can be lonely and there is no better companion than this wonderful machine.  You will wipe it down lovingly, even talk to it as you read the instructions out loud, you will use it everyday and never tire of seeing it sitting on your bench.  I cook for 2 but I know I would use it even if there was just me in the house and if you are like everyone else, you will have visitors from time to time which will give the machine a full work out.  I say go ahead and indulge yourself - it will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Hi Lym and welcome to the forum. I agree with everyone's comments above, indulge yourself and you will not regret it. I Spent many months and some sleepless nights thinking should I or shouldn't I. I have and love it? I just wish I had more time to use it more than I currently am.

Get ready to be amazed by the endless possibilities presented by the TMX.  :)

Lynn I have had my TMX a couple weeks now, I love it and think it would be excellent to cook for one in. I am the only person that eats soup in my house and Ive still been cooking it anyway! Usually get almost a weeks worth of healthy lunches out of it!

After a tumultuous couple of years TMX has given me a new hobby and focus, for which I am very grateful!

Thank you, all of you, for your lovely and encouraging replies.

I'm convinced!  I think I just needed that little push to help me make up my mind.

I am so glad that I found this forum as it appears to have lots of humour as well as great advice.  I had no idea what a 'dag' meant so I looked it up.

This is what I found:  DAG - one of a series of decorative scallops or foliations along the edge of a garment, cloth, etc.

Now I am more comfused than ever!  ???  I guess it must be an Aussie thing?  LOL.

Anyway, great to 'meet' you all and I look forward to letting you know how I get on with my Thermomix - when I get it.

Just as a P.S. - I am watching 'Saturday Kitchen', a UK cooking programme and what do I see behind the presenters . . . a Thermomix!  I have only ever seen a photo of one on the website before as they don't seem as popular here as they do in Australia.  That may be changing though.

Well I always thought a Dag was what hung from a sheeps bum (poo stuck to wool), that's what my dad had to crutch off the sheep lol :D

Your dad is right Dede.
According to the Urban Dictionary:
A dag is technically the matted wool on a sheep's tail, but in typical useage throughout Australia, it refers to people who don't have a neat, tidy or cultured appearance. It can also refer to a person who tends to be quite informal.
It is not necessarily a derogatory term in modern useage, but almost always has negative connotations - ie " He's a real dag!" or as an adjective - " His clothes are daggy." Often it is used in relation to someone unfashionable.
The term "dag" is also a type of compliment as used between mates, both male and female. For example, "you dag" means you're a bud but your way of thinking sure is different from mine!
A real dag is the matted sheep droppings and dirt mixed with the wool on the sheep's backside. To clean the dags out of the wool means to clean the matted wool of droppings. It's also any long, dangling, matted part of the wool.
Dag may even refer to the long, matted, untidy and dirty parts of another animal's coat, e.g. dags on a long-haired dog, dags in a neglected horse's tail, etc.

I doubt Gert would be offended Amy - she gives as good as she gets and this part of the meaning of the word dag (The term "dag" is also a type of compliment as used between mates, both male and female or the one I posted - a Dag is : a funny person) is how you meant it to be.

Welcome from Gloucestershire.  Yes, Satuday Kitchen has been displaying and using a Thermomix a few times just lately.  I don't know if you have been watching Great British Menu lately, but TMs were being used alomst every day by the chefs, although only for sauce type food.  They are certainly far more popular in Australia, Spain and Italy than here, but they are gradually coming into British kitchens.  I wouldn't be without mine.

Hi JuliaBalbilla and Cornish Cream.

Good to see fellow Brits on the site.  Big waves to you from a Surrey village.

I have been reading threads about keeping food hot whilst preparing somethng else in the TMX and found these on Amazon UK.  I have just ordered them.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004F87NDA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A1MB9OVWF48TO4

I wonder if they are available in Australia?  It seems good value for three and they come highly recommended.

I hope I haven't broken any rules suggesting these?  I promise I don't work for either Amazon or the manufacturer/distributer of these pots!

Hi Lynn

I think in Australia they have things called Thermoservers (sold by Thermomix, I believe), but they are not availlable here.  The ones you have ordered seem fine, so thanks for pointing them out to us.  And no, you haven't broken any rules  ;D  I may get some myself as I have been using my Hostess trolley for keeping stuff warm, but it is costly on the electricity for small amounts of food.  Let us know how well they work - they seem to have had good reviews :)

I am so pleased I haven't broken any rules!  To be bounced off  the forum within a week would be shameful!  :o

I gathered that the Thermoservers were not available in the UK which is what sent me searching for something similar.  I think that this three will do me very well.  I like the flexibility aspect of the different sizes.

I will let you know how I get on with them but don't leave it too long to order as they only have four left - so they say!  Not sure I always believe the availability but not worth taking a chance.

Just amazing!

I feel like Rita (Educating Rita) with all this knowledge I am accumulating!

Interestingly, the accompanying pictureon the link  looks as though some of the pies have been made with filo pasty which would make the pies much lighter.

Go for it - you know you want to.  Think of all tht glorious Cornish Cream with which you could top the sweet pies.   ;)  Yum.

OMG CC and Lynn, I wouldn't have room for a pie maker, lovely though they look and DH forbids me to go into Lakeland (Cheltenham) as he knows I spend too much.  When my DD was at school and I wanted something from there, I used to transfer the money for anything I wanted to her bank and she would pick it up after school, then sneak it into the house for me.   ;D ;D  Cannot get away with it now as DD has been studying in Bournemouth since September ...

@ Lynn, I will order some of those bowls asap, but am trying to convince DH that I really need a food dehydrator first.  If he won't pay for it, then I am going to have to, but I think I have convinced him that the bowls would be a good investment due to money we can save by not using the Hostess, which has to be heated for 25-30 mins before it is hot enough.

@CC I like the look of the Ikea thingy as well.  Decisions, decisions .... ???

My problem is that there is nobody at home to curb my whims and fancies (with purchases!) and with you lot encouraging me there will be no end to my kitchen gadgets!   ;D

I am still trying to get my hands on a TMX in the interests of healty living but I will do my best to resist a pie-maker - if I make four, pies I will eat four pies!!!

Go for the bowls JB,  they will save you a fortune in electricity!  Three bowls from Amazon better than one bowl from Ikea - that one has a hole in it!!  How does that work?  Might even buy that one if I see it next time I go to Ikea!!   He, he!!

Now if anyone wants me to get the bowls and ship to OZ . . .  Johnro?

Perhaps Amazon will?

What a whole new world I have stumbled into!   ;D ;D ;D

Hi Lyn, welcome to the forum. I am new here myself and can guarantee you won't regret your Thermomix purchase as it opens up a whole new world of interests. This forum has been such a pleasure providing endless enjoyment and inspiration. I am originally from UK but have lived most of my life in Australia. We lovingly use the term dag when friends and family do or say something off centre or a bit silly. (like the time I wore my training pants inside out to training last week as I got dressed in the dark, all the writing was on the outside- my training buddies said I was such a dag).

Welcome to the forum Lynn. I can see that you have had quite the introduction.
Dag for Kiwis and Aussies is more of a term of endearment.
You do need a pie maker. I have 2 the regular 4 hole one and the mini 8 hole version.
Just stay away from the shopping thread or you will find yourself needing a 5 in 1 multi cooker and many other things you never thought you would purchase.

Lol mcmich  ;D  I know what you mean by getting caught up in threads which make you want to buy things.  Working on DH atm to get me a food dehydrator for birthday (something I had never even heard of until I came on the forum).  That will have to be it for the moment as have no more room ...

Oh heavens!  I hadn't found the shopping thread - just the Pie-Maker thread.  Thanks Mcmich and Amy - I will explore later!  An eight hole pie maker Mcmich?  Sounds perfect for mince pies at Christmas . . .

I have just been to the supermarket and found myself in the electrical department - looking for pie-makers and, in particular the eight hole one!  Fortunately, all they had were toastie-makers!!!!

JB, I have been trying not to ask but - why do you want a food dehydrator?

Title: Re: Booked a demonstration!

Hi Lynn

Well firstly I am a bit of a gadget freak, but do only buy things that I know I am going to use.  I think they will earn their keep because you can buy, for example, fresh fruit and veg in bulk when it is in season and then dry it, and when it is out of season and expensive you will have your own personal stock.  Yes, some fruit and veg can be frozen, but dried food takes up far less space.  You can also dry cooked meat, which would be a great help to us, as I am a vegetarian, DD is away studying during term time so if we have a chicken, for example, DH has to eat it all himself and doesn't like having the same things every day.  So the remaining meat could then be dried and then rehydrated as and when.

There are lots of things you can do with it and you may be interested to this series of videos on YouTube.  The first one is here  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxVpIHre2ao&feature=related)and there are 8 in total.  Not that I am trying to encourage you to buy more equipment of course ... ;D

BTW Lynn, Thermomix UK are very bad at advertising on their website other things that they sell.  If you do place an order, ask what other things they sell at the time.  When your TM arrives, you get a list of other bits and bobs.  I bought the apron, but because I failed to order it at the same time as my TM, I had to pay postage on top.  I don't know where the list they sent me is now, otherwise I would tell you what was on it.

Hello Lyn
And welcome from another Brit in Britain!

I only joined in April and have had a ball on here, and in the kitchen.

Using the freezer much more. Make a pudding, and freeze the remainder for busy days.

Doing more cooking it is like anther pair of hands in the kitchen.

Great craik on here, so enjoy.

And why don't you  join the clandestine cake club in our area? Or set one up. Just google Clandestine Cake Club. It is a social for bakers with branches in uk and now NZ and Aus.

Oh and beware the pie maker thread, my machine was given away before we moved and is now coming back as unused!!!!!

Hi everyone and thank you for all your lovely welcomes, comments and advice.

I  have been off into a twilight world - somehow managed to pick up the Norovirus.  Not nice.  I couldn't even think about food so I stayed away from the forum for the sake of my health.  LOL.  It is the virus that rampages through cruise ships and hospitals; as I have been to neither it will remain one of life's mysteries how I picked it up.

The only good bit of news is that the heat retaining casseroles have arrived.  Now all I need is a Thermomix!

Droverjess:

I need cakes and pies like I need a hole in the head!  Please don't tempt me!!  I am trying to regain my once youthful figure!  It gets harder as the years roll by!  I want a TMX to get healthier and slimmer!!!!  Mind you, I do recall somebody saying I will put on weight!  Oh no!!! :o

JB:

Thank you for the tip about asking what else they have.  It does seem to me that Thermomis need a better retail strategy in the UK!  I discovered its existence by accident and I have yet to see an advertisement for it.

I hope that you get your dehydrator - if you do, let us know how you get on.

Off to bed!  I have a definite case of post viral malaise and sleeping a lot.

Wishing you all well.

Lynn

Norovirus, not a good one.  Have been on a cruise where it ran rampant but luckily it avoided us.  Lots of empty spaces in the dining room with people being confined to their cabins with it.  Hope you are feeling better Lynn.

Lol mcmich  ;D  I know what you mean by getting caught up in threads which make you want to buy things.  Working on DH atm to get me a food dehydrator for birthday (something I had never even heard of until I came on the forum).  That will have to be it for the moment as have no more room ...

Oh poor you Lynn.  Hope you get better soon.  Just think about your TM (minus the lovely food you will be making) and that should cheer you up.  It really is awful the amount of bugs and things that keep going around nowadays.  Glad your heat retaining thingys have arrived.  Meant to order some the other day.  Ordered a mouse as mine was giving up the ghost, and forgot about the casseroles ???

Mcmich, the spirali makes excellent veg spaghetti and such fun to play with  ;D

Just found that on Helene's blog Gretchen and see that it was a Benriner one.  They are supposed to be the bee's knees and are used by a lot of famous chefs.  However when searching on UK sites, they didn't seem to have particularly good reviews ???  I just wonder if the fault lay with the people operating them, rather than the machine itself, but I wasn't going to risk it. :-\

A belated welcome Lynn. I do hope you decide to buy a TMX.
As you have discovered this forum is really wonderful. Lots of us have become friends and there are a group of us from all parts of Australia getting together for a weekend here in Western Australia at the end of August.
Quite a few of us have get togethers in our local area.
Several have met up with others when they have been overseas.

I have always used 'dag' as a term of endearment. But I also helped Dad take the dags off the wool of the sheep.

Do hope you have recovered Lynn. Norovirus is nasty.

Many thanks to you all for your good wishes.

I am delighted to say that I have now recovered from the dreaded virus.  Honestly, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy - not that I think I have enemies, but one never knows!  LOL.

I have just had an email from the  demonstrator confirming my booking for 30 June.  He sounded really helpful and suggested I think of my favourite recipies and he will give advice on how to convert them.  I thought that was so helpful.

I think that one recipe book comes as standard and the Indian cookbook is given this month as an extra.  Is there another book that you would recommend I buy at the same time?  I already own dozens and dozens of cookbooks - can't resist them and hope to adapt recipes as soon as I have learnt the basics.

Best wishes to you all.

Lynn

I know you are in the UK Lynn but the very best book to buy is For Foods Sake by Teninia I am sure many would concur. I could toss out every  book bar the EDC and FFS. Forget about the  Thermomix cookbooks as they are so  out of style.

Glad you are feeling better now Lynn.  Yes, you get Fast and Easy Cooking as the basic book.  I had Taste of Asia as an extra when I bought mine, but don't use it as am not keen on Far Eastern food.  For Food's Sake is not available in the UK unfortunately, although I had an e-mail from Thermomix Australia saying that they will ship to the UK.  I had though of getting Full Steam Ahead to encourage me to make more use of the Varoma, but I don't know how good it is.  Have fun at your demo  ;D

You must be getting excited Lynn - not long until your demo now. The Full Steam Ahead cook book really didn't appeal to me at all. I just bought For Foods Sake & it's a gorgeous book. In the TM books I have the Indian and the Meat books - both of these have some great recipes, although lacking in pictures I have used these a lot. I have used the forum for recipes many times and won't even cook a recipe out of the books until I check out the reviews first :). I don't know if you have the rubbery mat in the UK but that is something I use constantly in my bread making to wrap the dough in to prove & roll out pastry etc. (I bought an Ikea mat for $10 rather than buying the Thermomix one though). Glad you are better now. Have a great weekend!

Thanks Gert, JB and Shirlmac,

I am hoping - perhaps in vain - that all the books will be available at the demonstration so that I can have a good look at them.  One way or another I will buy For Food's Sake as Tenina seems to be the doyenne of Thermomix.  I wish Amazon stocked  this.  The only one they have is the Spanish recipe book which - translated into English - doesn't have a good write up.  I have even tried Amazon US.  Thermomix don't make things easy do they?  It feels like trying to join a secret society and having to undergo an initiative test!!  LOL.  "First task is to find a demonstrator!"

If I can't get the book via the demonstrator, I will try to have it shipped.

Roll on next Saturday!  I am getting excited.  I spent the morning ogling the TMX on 'Saturday Kitchen' and wondering why it sits in glory on a shelf but I have never seen it used!  Has anyone else?

I searched the BBC Saturday Kitchen website and the only recipe I could find using a TMX had a two hour prep time!  I will have to write and ask for some TMX presentations on the show!!

Don' t waste you money on the official TMX cookbooks. It Tenina's books cost  £ 50 to get it to you it is worth it. Perhaps someone can bring it to you. Forget about the Spanish one. I bought it on Kindle then deleted it.  You will never get a demonstrator to supply Tenina's book. Don't waste your efforts.

There must be hundreds of demos on you tube for the TMX including Stef's ones in German but doesn't matter the language. Lots of good stuff on superkitchenmachine.com and you should buy a couple of her spatulas as well.

Temins's you tube stuff is nearly ready so  wait for those. She also has lots of her recipes on Face Book.

I don't know if you have the rubbery mat in the UK but that is something I use constantly in my bread making to wrap the dough in to prove & roll out pastry etc.

You can get similar mats here from Amazon  (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kitchen-Craft-Pastry-Mat-Non-Stick/dp/B000YJ98AU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340451465&sr=8-1).  Mine is a Kitchen Craft one too, but I paid about £20 for it, so not sure what the quality is like on this one as it is so much cheaper.

I agree Lynn, the Spanish TMX book from Amazon UK hasn't had good reviews.

Thank you Gert and Cornish Cream.

I have now signed up to Tenina's website and tried to order For Food's Sake.

The bad news is that the book is sold out!  The good news is that it is being reprinted and will be available sometime in July.  The even better news is that Tenina has done a deal to ship across Europe from the UK which will save a lot of money on postage.

It seems that Tenina has grasped the concept of the global village.  Good for her, she deserves huge success for her businesslike approach and attempts to satisfy her customers.

I shall definitely buy her book!

Hi JB,

I have just looked at the Amazon link and wonder if I need the mat?  I have granite worktops and tend to roll out straight onto them.  Seems to work.

I will buy the spatulas though - and the brushes - although I use this

                             http://www.lakeland.co.uk/21572/SonicScrubber-Bathroom-Brush

to clean around the taps.  No effort!  LOL.

I have granite  too and it is great for pastry. The silicone mat however is good for wrapping  your dough.

Helene's brushes are really good around the blades, the unit itself and your keyboard. Her spatula is gold . Best I have ever owned. I have 4 now and use them constantly.

Gert
Title: Re: Booked a demonstration!
Post by: JuliaBalbilla on June 23, 2012, 02:22:33 pm
Unfortunately I don't have granite and bits of dough / flour are a pain to clean up from our worksurface, hence the mat, which can just be flung in the sink to soak.  For wrapping dough I use a linen couche cloth (http://bakerybits.co.uk/Couche-Proofing-Linen-for-Baguettes-P388391.aspx) floured with rye flour.

I do like the look of Helene's brushes but my bank charges quite a lot if you want to pay in any currency other than £, so it's only worth it if you are buying a lot of items at the same time.  I have a Euro pre-payment card to allow me to buy stuff from the Euro Zone, but I don't think we can get them for CAN$  :(

Lynn, I wonder if the bristles on the SonicScrubber are long enough to clean the blades.  I use a toothbrush ATM which works fairly well but could do with something with slightly longer bristles ...

The Sunday papers lie unopened as I trawl through Gert's forays into a gun shop.  Thanks for the steer Cuilidh.  (BTW, I am not far from Guildford)

I think I will stick to the brushes which come with the spatulas but will wait until I actually buy a TNX.  After all, I may be totally unimpressed with the demonstration next Saturday . . .  ;D ;D ;D

JB, I like the look of the dough cloth and will think of getting that too.  I wasn't advocating the Sonic Scrubber for the TMX - just the bathroom taps.  I have another in the kitchen for the knobs on the hob.

Now, there is a gun shop on the outskirts of  the village - scary looking place with barred windows and dark blinds so you can't see in.  Maybe, just maybe I will go in and ask to look at . . . brushes! Ha, ha.

Oh, I see re Sonic Scrubber.  I will try Gert's idea and hunt for a gun shop  ;D The couche cloths are very good and stiff enough to stay ruched by themselves and not flop over the bread.  In spite of what they say on the website, I do wash mine, rather than just shake off the flour as have a phobia about it attracting weevils, but I put it through a cold wash, on its own, with no detergent  as I don't want my dough to smell scented.

Julia just take a screen shot of the brush  when you go to a fun shop. They  should know about the brush anyway.

Helene's brushes are very light so she could possibly just put a couple in an envelope for you. They are very good. If I had an extra I would send it to you.

Hello Lynn, hope you enjoy watching (and sampling) at your demonstration.  I too live by myself (now retired) but would not, could not be wihout my thx now.  The recipes/comments on this forum  greatly influenced me to get the thx a year ago.  Went into a lakeland shop (UK) a couple of weeks back and picked up some tiny brushes.   Called, "Home Spout Brushes" set of 4 for £2.99, catalogue ref 21626, sizes vary up to 1 inch in diameter. Excellent for cleaning between the blades.  You can see them on the Lakeland site.

It seems to have taken ages to happen but yesterday, I had my demonstration!

My sceptical daughter came with me and it was fascinating to see her scepticism wilting away and replaced by enthusiasm.

So the big question . . . did I buy one?  Well the honest answer is NO.

I ended up buying TWO!  One for me and one for my daughter.  I said that it was her birthday and Christmas present for the next twenty-five years and she said that was fine.   ;D

Delivery will be Tuesday so I must get my act together and decide what I will be cooking first.

Thank you Winn for the suggestion of brushes from Lakeland and thanks to you all for your wonderful welcome and advice.  On Tuesday, I shall really be a TMX owner and a proper member of the 'TMX Club'.
