Has anyone worked out how to cook these to perfection in the TM?
I have given up, my soft boiled are aways 1/2 & 1/2 and my hard boiled are always over done.
Woud love to know the secret.
Thanks,
Hally :)
-
This one will be a challenge, Hally, size and probably freshness, etc. will undoubtedly play a big part in the outcome. It will be interesting to see what replies come up!
-
Hally, how are you trying to cook them?
-
I do hard boiled eggs as that's how I like them and for salads etc. I make sure the eggs are at room temperature and cook them for 14 or 15 minutes. I use 59g eggs. I guess it would be harder to get soft boiled exactly how you want them.
-
In the baset as the edc states, but have reduced cooking time but still not right. I am now back to pan method :(
H :)
-
Hally this works for me.
500g tap water into the bowl, insert the steaming basket and add up to 8 eggs into the basket.
For soft boiled eggs (large 700g) cook for 11 minutes varoma temp, speed 1.
For hard boiled eggs cook 14 minutes varoma temp, speed 1.
-
Crown prince loves to dip his soldier in and for it to run.
I dont need to cook 8 eggs, do you lessen the time for 4 or 2?
H :)
-
Hally the things i do for you :-))
it worked, water just just under the basket my water was at 50 when i started the cooking it only took 7mins on varoma MC on
-
That looks perfect Uni.
What do you mean, water was at 50?
H :)
-
i steamed some carrots and the water temp was at 50 degree when i cooked the egg so if you try this it will take longer
-
Thanks, will give this a go.
How long for it to get to 50
H :)
-
It is the same cooking time for 1 egg or 8 Hally.
-
not sure, start from cold, you need to crack the egg so you can see it cooking
-
I'm not sure where I got this from (on this forum somewhere I think :) :)) but it has always worked for me. I only do one "layer" of eggs in the basket.
1.Place 500g water in TMX.
2.Place eggs in basket and program Temp Varoma, speed 1 and times as follows:
(I would say these times are for very large eggs)
11 mins - liquid yolk and creamy white
12 mins - creamy yolk and firm white
13 mins - softish yolk
14 mins - quite firm yolk
15 mins - hard boiled eggs
If your eggs are small, reduce time.
-
thanks djinni373, i will be saving this in my tip folder ;D
-
Thanks, djinni, are these eggs out of fridge or room temp.? Should always keep eggs in fridge.
-
59g eggs (700g pack) straight from the fridge. I have always stored eggs in the fridge too.
When I went to the local supermarket this week, (been away for a month) I noticed they have moved their eggs from the shelves to chilled storage. Strange... I don't remember them ever doing that before.
-
djinni, there has been pressure on the Supermarkets to do this, They say it is too expensive. What a laugh for such an important part of most peoples diets.
-
Thanks Chookie. Fascinating... I had not heard or seen anything about this.
-
Thank you everyone.
JD & djlnn, your eggs are cooked at the same time. My eggs 59g free range :)
Will be serving crown prince his eggs today, so will let you know how it goes.
H :)
-
My DH cooks his eggs (straight from the fridge) in the TMX and cooks 4 at a time and for 11 minutes varoma speed 1 and he likes his soft boiled. He tells everyone about the TMX because of his "perfect" boiled eggs ;D
-
Crown prince loved his eggs this morning.
I made 2
500g water
11 mins varoma temp speed 1
Will try hard boiled tomorrow for egg mayo sandwiches.
Thanks
H :)
-
One happy
chappy crown prince at your place then Hally. Love egg/lettuce/mayo sandwiches or egg on our salad plates in summer.
-
We love the sandwiches, going to make some for our long drive to Kalbarri.
H :)
-
Hally...........it's only a short drive. :D :D :D :D Are you stopping at Coomallo down off the road for lunch?
-
Cookie, its 6 hours!!!!!
Wheres Coomallo? Anything worth stopping for there?
We thought we might stop in Geraldton and take crown prince to the water park.
H :)
-
Coomallo is simply a picnic spot. There is nothing there. You'd be better off in Dongara and have a swim or Geraldton as you say.
When do you go?
-
We leave early sat morning. Our friends are driving up friday. DS has a female friend & her brother going with their mum & dad.
Should be fun, looking forward to relaxing, it is such a lovely spot.
H :)
-
It sure is. Can you cope with the heat? I guess you swim etc.
-
Yes will be at the beach, the gorges, the river, the pool or asleep!!LOL
Its now how much can I fit in DH's car......I have a growing mound of stuff up the hallway ;D
H :)
-
Are you taking the TMX?
-
I love to add some chopped mint, S&P, dash only of tomato sauce ( ;) secret ingredient), to the eggs and mayo. I'm so hungry ATM that my mouth is watering at the thought!
-
Oh yes my baby is coming.
The probem being it appears 1/2 my oantry is coming too.
I dont thnk we can fit all my packing in DH small car.
H :)
-
Just before New Years we took DD24 back home to Newman. She had so much stuff after Christmas and shopping and with her dogs I had to tow a trailer. It took us 131/2 hours to get there.
-
Oh my goodnees.
I can just see dh face as he walks into my huge long pile of things to go in the car & thats before the eskys.
Got a feeling I will be jamming it in. Had to sit on the suitcase to close it.
H :)
-
Did you plan your meals and only take the food that is necessary? Otherwise leave all the clothes at home and live in your bathers. ;)
-
Sort of but theres lunch as well.LOL
H :)
-
No luck today with eggs
Total weight of 12 eggs 420g
Fresh free range from the kalbarri egg farm
4 eggs
500g tap water
11 min varoma speed 1
2 hard boiled
2 semi hard boiled.
Do really fresh eggs cook quicker?
H :)

Do really fresh eggs cook quicker?
H :)
I don't know if they cook quicker but they do seem to be harder to peel.
-
I was always told that you are always better to use eggs that are a couple of weeks old for hard boiling as they are easier to peel than fresh eggs. I'm guessing that the freshness will also effect how quickly they cook as well but I'm not sure. Unless you have your own chooks I guess it is really hard to tell how long ago they were laid. I rotate my eggs so I'm always using the oldest eggs first.
-
What makes hard-cooked eggs hard to peel?
The fresher the egg, the more difficult it is to peel after hard cooking. That's because the air cell, found at the large end of the shell between the shell membranes, increases in size the longer the raw egg is stored. As the contents of the egg contracts and the air cell enlarges, the shell becomes easier to peel. For this reason, older eggs make better candidates for hard cooking.
-
These eggs are very fresh, the use by date is March!!
So i am thinking they need to e cooked for a shorter time.
H :)
-
How frustrating for you Hally, just when you think you have got it right :'( You can always keep the hard boiled eggs for sandwiches and cook up another lot for DS.
-
Still havent got this right, cooked 6 eggs, 4 took out after 11mins, 2 were very runny, 2 were nearly hard boiled. Left the other 2 in for 3 mins 30 secs, not sure what they are like.
The problem is they dont seem to cook evenly. i spread them out evenly in the basket.
H ;)
-
I have learnt to make the perfect soft boiled egg in the thermomix from
http://trissalicious.com/2011/07/19/momofukus-chicken-and-egg-on-the-thermomix/
Put 4 eggs in the basket, speed 3, 60 degrees for 43 mins.
I think the fast speed help distribute the temperature more evenly.
-
43 minutes seems a long long time to make boiled eggs in the TMX. ???
I do mine for maximum of 10 minutes Huilink
-
I use this little gadget. You just throw it in with the eggs.
-
i have one MJ do u use it in the TM ?

I like the long slow method sometimes because I can make a long slow breakfast otherwise I do the quick boil,on the stove.

-
I had one of those red egg timers, but threw it out.
-
I have one of those red egg timers...but haven't used it since I got TM (which BTW I find does perfect boiled eggs every time ??? )
I do 8 and 600ml water, varoma, sp2 for 12 min for soldier dipping, 15min for hard boiled. :)
-

Yep! I love it. Throw it in the basket with the eggs. Most often I cook hard boiled eggs when I cook potatoes for a salad.
-
I still cant cook the erfect runny egg, hard boiled yes but not runny ???
-
Must be frustrating H, so far it has alway worked for me using the method I put above, wish there was some way I could help... :(
-
MJ, i have one of those red things, but it gives off a funny smell so have only used it once.
-
Chookie, I haven't ever noticed any smell ???
I've had mine for three years. It's also great for perfect runny yolks.
-
No smell with mine either ???
unless it did the first time, don't remember (we got it in a wedding present...) :)
-
4 eggs in, 11 mins sp1 varoma
Lets see

Here we go 2 perfect 2 too cooked, i dont get it
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/20/pate8y7u.jpg)
-
Doesn't make sense Halex. ???
After reading this on Sat night I did some for the girls tea to try it out, I put 6 in (and my red thing in the centre just cuz I could) and did 600ml water, sp1.5 for 12.5min, all were perfect soldier eggs, evenly cooked etc. So don't understand how yours cook so unevenly? ???
-
I dont get it either, spaced them out evenly, was very genle with them, from the same carton of eggs.
Its a mystery, always happens
-
hally have you tried them in the PC?

-
Wonder, no would never think of that :)
I would assume they woud explode & you would have messy eggs for breakfast, lol
-
Every now and then my hard boiled eggs explode in the TM... :-)) ???
-
I've read through that link a few times and the eggs look great but we aren't big boiled egg eaters so have never cooked them like this.
-
Next time cp has them for breakfast will try in pac & let you know.
-
H - did perfect soft yolked soldier eggs for lunch again today...same method as above, I find 12 min not enough and 13 too much, so do 12 then another 30sec when it beeps. Perfect...and all evenly cooked. ??? Really don't understand how your doesn't cook evenly. ???
-
Hally you will have to try it one more time :)
-
Hally are your eggs all the same size? I find sometimes if I buy free range from the market they can all be slightly different.
-

this is awesome :)

Absolutely great to see you posting PAAF. How are you and what have you been doing. I have been wondering how your procedure went and if it was successful and are you a happy camper. I hope all is well with you . We do get a bit concerned when we do not hear from some of our forum members and are therefore delghted to see you.
That is a very useful post on eggs, especially as we have so many new members without a lot of experience with the Thermomix . Thanks for bumping.

-
I've just started boiling eggs in the TMX and didn't realise how easy and convenient it is.
-
Did you have to ask how much water and for how long and what speed wonder or did you just do it? LOL!
-
I always use the thermomix. It's the only way to boil eggs as far as I'm concerned.
-
lol Gert.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the dark grey around the yolk? I see others with beautiful white and yellow but mine always have a grey tinge to them.
-
It's because they were overcooked Wonder. It also pays to plunge them into cold water immediately, leave them there until they are cool.
-
Thanks Judy, will try cooking less and putting in cold water.
-
I'm loving boiling eggs in the tmx too. I've used Quirky Jo's quinoa salad recipe where 4 eggs rest on top of the quinoa (in the basket) and they are cooked for approx 18-20mins/varoma/sp2. I then have quinoa for dinner and eggs for lunch the next day...or eggs in the quinoa dish :)
-
Wonder I've found that by using the thermomix and then plunging the eggs into cold water I never have grey around the yolks anymore.
