This past weekend, we drove up to the Blue Mountains to pick chestnuts, walnuts, and apples. At one lovely cafe/shop near Bilpin they had trays of gorgeous looking feijoas!
Was looking to find ways of using them other than jam, etc. and came upon this site.

Also found helpful info on this site, http://www.nzwomansweekly.co.nz/food/recipes/feijoa-jam/

Oh great! this will be helpful, our new backyard has two massive feijoa trees so I'll be using lots of these! -(it also has two massive pomegranate trees which will be great too)
-
(sigh) Can I come and live with you?? LOL - no wonder you chose that particular house Jamberie - with those trees there I think I would have bought it even if the property only had a one room tent . . . ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D (read here "jealousy personified . . .!! lol)

What a great choice of recipes for feijoas - I still have no idea what they are though :D
-
Judy - if you ever find them do try them - the taste is just amazing!! We have a tree in our front yard, but sadly never any fruit. The flowers are pretty though . . . Have a look at these links if you like. The third link gives a recipe for Feijoa Curd!!

Thanks GF, I don't remember ever seeing them but I'm sure they are in some shops and now I know what they look like, I will probably see them :-))

Oh I miss feijoas from NZ
-
Thanks for the links Goldfish....I LOVE them, and we have 4 trees of them 8)
I had made paste with them, but wasn't so keen as I found it a bit gritty.
I personally love them just as is, scooped out with a spoon :-*
-
Like most fruit I think Maddy....best as is!!! :)
Three trees .... How lucky are you!! :))
-
Yes just cut in half and eat,
-
same here, no idea what they are :-))
Me too. Can't even pronounce them :D
-
We used to have a tree at our old house, and I still miss it. I think the new people have removed it along with most of the other fruit trees:(
I agree that they are best eaten with a spoon when ripe. Wish I had seen that Wordpress site when I still had the tree.

Sure thing GF!
We will also have pistachio trees...but I am yet to work out if they are the pistachios I hope they are!
Maddy- do you do anything special with your trees? Do the birds eat the fruit before you do?
-
I'd love to have lots of fruit and nut trees. We only have a lemon here. In our other house we had apples, plums ,peaches, mandarin, grapefruit, lemon, bananas. Sadly quite a few of them ended up getting white ants in them.
-
I think feijoas are a type of guava - maybe a pineapple guava?

Not a thing :) everything here has to survive with little - to no water......we've really not had much rain in so long, and have to buy water in every 3-4 weeks.....sadly I noticed 2 of the trees are not looking so good because of it :(
The birds & possums don't touch the feijoas, they tend to drop and rot if you don't get to them quick enough.....we have more problems keeping the animals out of the 2 orchards, with apples, pears, plums, apricots, quince etc.......but the worst is the cockies giving the almond trees a hiding.....I have yet to have just one nut.....they eat them before the shells even harden >:( naughty birds!
This is what they look like

It's so hard to describe exactly what they taste like...not for everyone, but please try one if you see them ;)
