Title: Cleaning an old bread tin
Post by: djinni373 on December 13, 2017, 11:05:15 am
I was given a starter for a Danish Black Bread. It's 12 years old and looks and smells lovely. My first attempt at making this bread was very ordinary and not nearly as nice as I know it should be. The oven does need repairs, but I also think the tins I used were too small and too light weight. So I'm going to try using my old bread tin for the next loaf. I think the tin's about 30 years old, it's big and it's heavy. I haven't used it for ages and it has some marks that won't come off with normal washing. Any suggestions on how to clean this tin without damaging it? Or am I going to have to buy a new one? Thanks, Gayle

If it has got a patina it may be not a wise move to clean too harshly.  Having said that, if it's OK to give it a good scrub have you tried the good old bicarb / vinegar mix?  I assume you have also tried steel wool.  I recently cleaned my TMX bowl with a load of eggshells I had left over then, when I emptied my TMX into the sink, I scrubbed that out as well using them and the sink came up sparkling.  If you are OK using harsher options, perhaps an oven cleaner or BBQ cleaner might do the job for you but you would have to be sure that you clean the tin out thoroughly afterwards.

I’d be lazy and just line it with baking paper Gayle.

Lol Judy. Marina I had forgotten the old baking soda/vinegar treatment. Will give that a go. Thanks ladies  :-* :-*

The outside of my bread tins looks horrendous, but the inside is fine. Judy's idea is a good one.

Well I've tried a few things and the tin is still really grimey. Can't bring myself to use it while it looks so yuk so I've bought a new one from Kitchen Direct. Same size, not non-stick and free shipping. 8) Thanks for your suggestions girls :)
