Mrs Mason's Nuts and Bolts:
Number of People: lots
Ingredients:
1/2 cup vegetable oil
Packet French onion soup
Packet cream of chicken soup
2 dessertspoons curry powder
375g mixed nuts or peanuts
300g nutri grain (290g now packet size has changed)
Preparation:
Place oil into bowl and heat to 50 degrees. Put into a large bowl. Add other ingredients and stir well. I leave this and keep stirring it every time I go near it. When oil seems absorbed and it is well mixed place in an air tight container.
Tips/Hints:
this is made from lots of pre fab stuff but we like it. I was given it many many years ago by the then owners of the Monkey Mia caravan park. Before it was a resort.
Tips from members
Chookie - Put oil and powders into TMX bowl, heated and stirred until 50o. Much easier to mix in.
Astarra - they are nicer if left for 4-5 days, turning each day. Also, my SIL keeps hers in the freezer and says they are even nicer cold.
Johnro - The recipe which I have used since Noah was a boy has 2 teasp dry mustard and 2 teasp curry powder with the packets of dried soup mixes - works a treat.
Cookie - Sometimes I left the strong flavours out and added dried fruit for something different.

Now on tapatalk so here is the photo.
-
i remember making Nuts and Bolts years ago ;D
is a dessert spoons bigger than a Tbl spoon ?
-
About half the size. You could use tablespoons and then they would be more curry like.
-
so if i used 1 tbl of curry it would be ok
-
Goldfish has just posted this (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=10978.0) information about spoon measurements which you may find interesting.
These sound very moorish Cookie but I suspect you need a glass of something in your hands at the same time ;D
-
already save a copy of it JD
-
Myum used to make this when I was a kid. I haven't had it for years.
-
What's nutri gain Cookie ???
Here in the UK Nutri-grain is this (http://www.kelloggs.com/en_US/kelloggs-nutri-grain-cereal-bars-apple-cinnamon.html) made by Kelloggs, horrible things :P
-
Nothing like it CC - what you showed wouldn't work in Cookie's recipe. NutraGrain is one of the few cereals I will eat, probably full of sugar but they are yummy.
-
I use to make this years and years ago.
-
Like this CC

Also made by Kellogg's
-
Thanks Judy and Dede for your help :-*
I found Kellogg's Multi Grain (http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/shelves/Breakfast_Cereals_in_ASDA.html?_fbr=Kelloggs) Start that might do ;)
-
OMG after eating this on the weekend I have so go to make this. As soon as I recover I am off to the shops for a big buy up.

I'm so glad you liked it. It is very moorish./MOREEEEEEEish. I think I spelled it incorrectly, thanks Chookie. I haven't been out on the moors.
-
Cookie, thanks for posting. Loved it, very MOREEEEEEEish.
-
Kellogs Multi grain start is very similar to the NutriGrain here in Oz. think it will be fine in this recipe CC .
My friend was here from UK earlier in the year and she had to have this cereal for breakfast most days
as she always eats the Multigrain start at home.
-
Got my stuff. Ready to roll.

Thanks MF for confirming that I'm on the righttrack on sourcing a similar cereal ;)
-
To die for . Love it.
Gert
-
so easy to make, thanks.
-
Cookie, thanks for the taste at the Retreat. Made some today, to fill the hungry family tomorrow. I Have had to hide them as I keep eating them.
-
I know the feeling.
-
Warning!! Stay away from this recipe. It is wicked.
Gert
-
I'm not going to make it, I know from experience I can't stop eating them...
-
All here love this and every person who has eaten it by the handful as it always features at BBQs in this house. I am not sure where I first came upon the recipe many moons ago - thanks for the reminder Cookie :)
-
It is nearly 30 years ago that it was given to me Robyn.
-
I wonder if my mum would like these...
-
It is nearly 30 years ago that it was given to me Robyn.
I have been making this sine I was old enough to help mum with her Christmas baking (we used to bake for all the oldies in our lives ... There were lots lol) anyway that is over 30 years so the recipe has been around for a while. I have years go seen it on the side of the nutrigrain packet.
-
Made this AGAIN today. Put oil, and powders into TMX bowl and heated and stired until 50 o. Much easier to mix in. Now i must hide it , so I can't see it.

I do not want to hear that. Not listening!
Gert
-
Thanks Chookie. DH has decided he would like me to keep making these, of course who am I to say no? :) :)
-
What oil do you use?
I loved nutri grain in Aus when I visited in 82, nothing is as good here.
Will use start though and try to make for hampers for family for Xmas.
-
I have been invited to an annual Christmas get together for some ex Curves girls. I bought storage tomatoes at K Mart for $2 each. Putting the nuts and volts inside. Works as Table Deco and gift all in one.
They had red onions, garlic, lemons etc as well. Kitsch but cheap and useful. Also red and green!
Gert
-
DJ just use a vegetable oil or rice bran oil.
Gert they sound nice.
-
I just saw that pic. It is too huge. I must start using my iPhone for Tapatalk.
I bought 4 litres of Rice Bran Oil in Woolies for less than $10 today.
Gert
-
I know what it is though Gretchen - I even remember Mum having one (a sauce container) when I was a kid, it seems they have come back. Is it just a storage container or can it be for sauce these days.
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/10/18/ytujenan.jpg)No Judy it is just one of those plastic containers you put bits in. I will go get my iPhone and take another pic .
Gert
OMG it worked!
-
Hooray! Nice one Gert, now I can see what you meant! :D
-
That's much better Gretchen.
-
Yay Gretch, heaps better. Did you see how rob explained to make your iPad pics smaller under the "photos" topic a couple of weeks ago? That's how I do it now.

I read that CP but when I send a photo from my iPad camera roll to myself via email I do not get and option re the size. I do with the iPhone though so must remember to use that.

Looks a good idea Gert.
-
Hi, I just finished making this and it is sensational!
I don't even like cereal, never have, but this is great..
I didn't see anywhere how long you have stored this for or how long it lasts?
-
In an air tight container it should last for quite a while curly66.
-
I'm making this for a friend of mine tomorrow :) I'm really excited, there are some great reviews on here so I think he will really like it :D
-
It really is nice Amy and I put lots of curry powder in!! took a container full down to my friend, a large container!!, and she nearly ate it all in the 20 minutes I was there chatting....
-
No need to ask how long it lasts as it doesn't . I add chilli.
Gert
-
The man I'm making it for currently holds the record for how quickly any one person has consumed something I've made for them... so it sounds like he will surpass his own record with these :-))
-
I have never smelled anything quite like them ;D
-
Did you think it was a nice smell Amy?
-
Absolutely cookie ;)
And mum assured me they were nice because she stole some :o ;D
-
Will make these this week. They sound perfect to take with me on our shopping trip next sat.
-
I had one friend refuse to try them because she'd had nuts and bolts before and thought they were disgusting BUT before the other girl ate the lot she decided to try them and LOVED them... lol.. a convert so they must be good!!
-
Made them today and they are sooo good. Must stop eating them.....or eat them all and make new batch tomorrow!(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/10/22/syge3u2e.jpg)
-
LOL ;D
-
They are rather moreish aren't they?
-
Just made these to take away with me this weekend. I am on nibbles for our cabin at the Blackwood Marathon. They are terrible. I keep picking at them every time I give them a stir.
I hope it doesn't take too long for the oil to soak in or there may not be any left to take.
-
Glad to hear I am not the only one with no self control Den ;)
-
I make these often...don't know if this helps anyone, but...they are nicer if left for 4-5 days, turning each day.
Also, my SIL keeps hers in the freezer and says they are even nicer cold....
We all love them.
-
Astarra, are you suggesting that everyone hold off eating them for 5 days? ;D ;D ;D Let's see who has the strongest willpower.... :D
-
Oh oh.
805gms of Nutri Grain
750 gms of nuts
Gert
-
Blimey teddy Gert, thats going to be one big bowl of nuts and bolts :o
-
I made a double batch to bring away with us. They are nicer after a few days, but usually we can't wait.
-
When I was in Australia - long time ago I loved this cereal.
Can't begin UK. Start not the same.
Would Cheerios work or be too small?

I have seen it with Cheerios and wheat chex

For those making this recipe for Christmas hampers, the 5 day waiting period will be beneficial to the recipient then ;D
-
Was this emsies recipe she used for the retreat?
-
I don't remember Emsie doing nuts and bolts CP? Do you mean her goodie bag gift?
-
From another thread, Amy, yes, it was the one from the goodies bag. . .
-
I'm sure Emsie did sweet spicy nuts. I don't think it was this recipe.
-
Amy, do you know if Emsie's recipe is on the forum? Might be interesting to have a thread with just the recipes for spiced nuts . . and another thread for the comments . . . just a thought . . . :D
-
That is a great idea GF :D
But I can't remember which recipe she said she used...I'm wondering if she made it up herself? ???
-
Emsie didn't make this recipe as hers was all nuts. They were delicious and I would love to see the recipe so that I can make some for friends. They already know about Nuts and Bolts. :D :D
-
Am doing these tomorrow for the teachers thank you presents!! Have 2 big jars waiting. The school has a no nuts policy but I'm sure the teachers can just take them home before they open them...? ???
-
The recipe which I have used since Noah was a boy has 2 teasp dry mustard and 2 teasp curry powder - works a treat (http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/christmas/santa-eating-cookies-smiley-emoticon.gif) (http://www.sherv.net/santa.eating.cookies-emoticon-1481.html)
-
Do you still use the soupy mixes as well johnro?
-
Definitely Kimmyh - cream of chicken and french onion - actually made a batch for staff lunch at school last Friday (http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/christmas/jump-in-smiley-emoticon.gif) (http://www.sherv.net/jump-emoticon-1532.html)
-
Thanks johnro we love this so will try your mustard curry tweak thanks.
-
I think the original recipe had mustard in Robyn. I was given it a long, long time ago.
-
Cookie probably about the same time last century as I came across it (http://www.messengerfreak.com/emoticons/christmas/ho_ho_merry_xmas.gif)
-
Most probably. LOL
-
Making this today, daughter has uni exams coming up and loves eating this when studying :)
-
She will do well. My DD loved it for snacking too. Sometimes I left the strong flavours out and added dried fruit for something different.
-
Thanks for the link Astarra. Sounds perfect for school holiday snacking 😄😄
-
Your boys will love them BZB. Thanks for the bump as I must make some. Haven't done any for a while.
-
Just be warned BZB. It's very hard to stop eating these.
-
I love this idea. However i try and avoid additives for my kids as it sends them crazy!
-
The last things you want is crazy kids. Best to avoid them. :D
-
Making this for long weekend in Blue Mountains.
-
Enjoy.
-
Bump :)
-
I've just made a batch of these to take away. It is certainly easier using Chookie's method of putting the oil, soups and curry powder in the thermomix bowl and cook until it reaches 50 degrees. It makes the mixing so much easier.
-
Made this yesterday with a packet of vegetable soup and curry powder (as I didnt hv french onion and also as I am a vegetarian, so cannot use chicken).. but it was yummy.
One silly thing I did even after reading all the reviews, I forgot to use Chookie's method of putting the powders in the oil first, it wasnt consistent but tasted yumm, and even got it as a snack at work :)
I am afraid, I will be buying nutrigrain for myself rather than my kid now ;)
-
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Chookie's method is really good. the flavours are really well distributed through.
-
Made a pile of this yesterday. Was a bit heavy handed with the curry powder. Still nice. Thanks Cookie.
