The phrase "as happy as Larry" is thought to either be derived from the term "larrikin", meaning a hooligan, or made after a boxer called Larry Foley won 1000 pounds in the final fight of his career, and was therefore very happy ;)

What I'd really like to know is how the saying "how's your father" came into being . . . ie. . .
it's a bit how's your father . ." , , , meaning it's ok but not too good . . .! ;D
