Fundj's Limoncello Recipe

This was posted in What are you Cooking Today so thought it would be easier to find here.

Here's Uni's instructions from "what are you cooking today" Kathryn.

300mls of Vodka or pure alcohol
Zest of 3 large lemons (unsprayed)
400mls of boiling water - 600mls if using pure alcohol
200 mls of sugar          - 300mls sugar if using pure alcohol
Soak zest in alcohol for 7 days (i do 5 days only)
Mix water and sugar let cool
Strain lemon zest and add alcohol to the cooled water and sugar mixture
I will only use lemons that have not been sprayed with any chemicals (backyard one are the best) i have tried shop bought organic lemons was not happy with the taste of the end product.

For sambuca just add ½ bottle of queens aniseed essence or sambuca essence from an Italian deli, to the alcohol

Or you can go to a home brew shop and buy proper essences for adding to pure alcohol or Vodka. There are hundreds of them.  I make a brutal Navy Rum and lots of others.

That sounds easier Gretchen. I have one near me. Then I can buy lots of vodka at duty free next time. Thanks for the hint.
I've only recently discovered that I like limoncello although I've had a bottle for about 12 months. :-))
May all dairy items in your fridge be of questionable vintage.

I love the limoncello.  My first taste was just a sip here and there now I am a seasoned limoncello drinker and might have to put a bit more in the glass :P

lemoncello is lovely mixed with lemonade on a hot day, or add a bit to your whipped cream or cake icing  :-*

I've seen recipes for this on other forums and keep meaning to make it!! I can get pure alcohol, but I think it's better to use Vodka and the pure alcohol will make it incredibly alcoholic! :o
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

JD my sister nancy keeps her bollte of vodka in the freezer, it does not freeze

meganjane just add more water and sugar. 600mls water and 300mls of sugar

I don't think pure alcohol freezes does it? Alcohol in things lowers the freezing temperature.

That's right, pure alcohol doesn't freeze, but the remainder of the ingredients will freeze. Vodka is only around 40% alcohol, but it shouldn't totally freeze.

I'll take your word on the pure alcohol and give it a go.

Uni, we had the most un-Italian Italian gentleman in his early 80's visiting here today and I offered him a drink of Limoncello.  He had never heard of it before (had heard of Grappa though so wasn't a total disgrace to the Italian community) but enjoyed it immensely. We used to have another Italian living opposite us and he would come over to watch DH working in the shed many years ago.  I had made some risotto so took some out for an Italian's verdict - he had never heard of it before either.  I couldn't believe it  ???

my inlaws are the same JD, it all depend from what part of italy their are from, when i was growing up our type of risotto was baked

and i never heard of Limoncello 25 years ago
i don't need a recipe i'm italian
