Tips and Tricks / EDC "Bookmark"
« on: June 30, 2010, 05:21:00 pm »
Hi All

I'm always looking at the next recipe and losing my current ("tonight's tea") page.

I have now tied a ribbon to the (rear) of the top spring, so I can have more than one recipe on the go.  It seems a such simple tip, but aren't they the best the share?  :)    PS  Credit goes to Stephanie Alexander's "Cook's Companion" which includes several built in ribbon bookmarks.

Tips and Tricks / Google Translate
« on: May 23, 2010, 04:17:00 pm »
I may be preaching to the converted but I have just discovered Google Translate.  It allows you to translate sections of text (or whole webpages) from one language to another.  It can even determine which language it is translating from if you are unsure.

Here is a link to the site http://translate.google.com/#en|en|

Farfallina has been posting some great recipes on the forum recently, referring to photos on her blog.  Every time I went to look at a photo I wondered what the rest of the page said.  Enter my new best friend Google Translate!

For example (using Farfallina’s blog) to translate a whole webpage, copy and paste the link eg http://thermomixtarifdefterim.blogspot.com/2009/12/portakal-aromal-cikolata-selalesi.html  into the “Translate” box on the Google Translate website and this is what you will get http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fthermomixtarifdefterim.blogspot.com%2F2009%2F12%2Fportakal-aromal-cikolata-selalesi.html&sl=auto&tl=en .  This is a delicious looking chocolate orange pudding!!  ;D   You can also then continue browsing through the rest of the website and it will continue to be translated as you go.

This is all new to me, so hopefully I have explained it clearly enough for others who may wish to explore it further.  Just imagine all those TM recipes just waiting to be translated and posted?!  :D

PS  Firefox Add-on
I use Firefox and there is an Add-on  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14815/ .  Once installed you just paste the text or website link into the small search box to the right hand side of your navigator bar (the bit to the right of where you type in a website address) takes you straight to Google Translate.

My first batch of Hot Cross Buns from the EDC made last Sunday afternoon were wonderful.  I tried to make some more last night and unfortunately I have little rock cakes  :(.  This is only my second attempt at breadmaking, so I am looking for some help please.

Firstly, I think it may not have been warm enough?  I left it to rise on the kitchen table, and it was about 7.30pm,  If baking in the evening, should I be putting the dough in the oven on about 50 deg?

Secondly, I added the currants and sultanas at the beginning as I found they didn't seem to blend when I added them following the EDC Hot Cross Bun instructions.  They seemed a bit chopped up through the mixture.

Any pointers would be welcomed, as I am hoping to make some more over Easter, and hope I haven't lost my touch already!   Thank you in advance, and Easter Greetings to all. :)

Introduce Yourself / Another Perth newbie
« on: March 29, 2010, 08:28:05 am »
Hello from another Perth (south of the river!) learner driver.

I have had my TM 2 weeks now.  A friend raved about hers so much, I started to research online.  After reading the Taste.com.au TM forums I was sold.  And this friendly, helpful forum was just the icing on the cake.  Funnily enough, we were so well prepared, I experienced (and got over) my buyer's remorse before we even had our demo!

So far have made risotto, butter, buttermilk bread and the herb 'n garlic dip.

Yesterday (encouraged by forum members' postings here) experimented with hot cross buns.  As in a rush, made 2 small loaves instead of buns.  We were just so delighted with how delicious it was toasted this morning.

Looking forward to (eventually) contributing more than just questions!

Cheers, Helen
