I got this book recently and am surprised at how many I want to try when life allows more time in the kitchen than just survival time!  LOL

Hi there

I've been working through the Rawlicious booklet and am 2/3 of the way through. If you'd like to see what my versions of the Rawlicious recipes look like, feel free to have a look here.

Interesting blog Tarah.  Raw food isn't for everyone so what do you serve up to visitors if you don't mind me asking.

Your blog is fantastic, Tarah.  I'm looking forward to trying more recipes from the Rawlicious book now.

Yes, I know, faffa, I've lost about 2 hours a day since getting cows - not all of it work, I love to watch them too.  When I'm not gazing at baby chicks or ducklings... :)

Thanks Judy. I've decided over the years not to take on a strong position on any food regime. I've been sympathetic to vegetarianism for years and have been predominantly vegetarian for the last few years and 50 to 75% raw in the last couple of months.

When visitors are coming, I meet them where they're at. I'll cook bacon and eggs for my Mum if she's staying because she cooks it for me when I'm at her place. My nephew and his girlfriend are vegetarian and so is morning tea when they visit. If family or friends want to try raw then I can do that too. But to be fair, I'm still pretty new to this and am still working out what I would want to provide to visitors. Once I get dehydration worked out, then I know I could do raw morning and afternoon teas really easily. I'd have to think about how I'd put on a raw dinner. But I realise I need to think about this and appreciate you asking.

Thanks to you also Bel. I'm envious that you can gaze at baby chicks and ducklings.

see i would love to come and visit and try it when you've made it lol
i just don't want to go to all the effort of making it to discover that no one in my family will eat it and it upsets my tummy ;) but i am very curious ;)

by the way JD, if you came to my house chances are that you'd eat gluten free, i just do all my cooking GF now ;)

That would be fine Karen - looking through the GF book, there are plenty of recipes I'd do for us anyway if I had the time.

With raw food though - that is a different kettle of fish.  I just can't imagine some people ( the men I know) eating raw food as it is difficult even getting salads into some of them. Tarah, you seem to have it all under control and just go with the flow at the moment, as we all do. Some of our guests eat some foods, others don't and we have to cater for them all.  I have 3 diabetics in this street and for a Christmas get-together a couple of years back, I made 2 desserts, one for them and one for the non-diabetics. Mind you, whenever they put on something - the diabetic's needs are ignored so it does make you wonder :-)) :-)) :-))

I've also noticed that not everyone wants to eat raw food, and I cook steamed veges and stir fries sometimes. I can see that a raw food diet could be beneficial but it's hard to stay on it all the time so I just do the best I can...

I don't generally notice a problem after eating raw food, except after I've had a break from it. But all is back to normal after a day or two.

I am happy to eat raw foods - but MrsT needs something hot.  I commend you for not forcing your guests to eat just what you eat, but think that they should have some respect for you.  I guess I eat almost anything, but my staff gag at things I am willing to eat.

I'm not dedicated to being 100% raw food or vegetarian. I suppose I keep my options open. I've just cooked some brown rice and steamed some vegetables for my dinner. I'm sure that if I did decide to go 100% raw, people close to me would respect that. In the meantime, my sister, my nephew and his girlfriend are all dedicated vegetarians so I respect that. I like having a fish meal when I'm out so I may never become 100% raw. But now I'm curious. What sort of things would make your staff gag?

Oh Tarah, seriously you may not want to know apparently  ;) :D then again his staff throw out bananas when they get a brown spot on them so may not be that bad after all  :-))

The beetroot and chocolate puddings !!!! ... until they tasted them.  Raw beetroot salad.  Asparagus, artichokes, broad beans, raw carrot salad,...  very unadventurous.

Haha Kathryn, I almost put into my post that perhaps I didn't really want to know...

Thanks Thermomixer, now I understand. I've always loved beetroot including cooking it and of course chocolate so I had no difficulty with the thought of combining them and then really enjoyed it. I'm making it again for my Mum tomorrow so this one is a keeper!

I haven't yet tried raw asparagus - another first! - but have eaten raw jerusalem artichokes which Google tells me is a variety of sunflower so will try some artichokes soon...

I have read that fava beans can be eaten raw but hadn't found them in health food stores and hadn't googled them - so now I've worked out they are also called broad beans - does the learning ever stop! Do you prepare them in some way or just eat them straight?

I agree raw beetroot or carrot salad is unadventurous. I keep wondering what would make the crunchier veges more acceptable in their raw form... Mixing in salt softens cabbage but I don't know if that's the answer...

With the asparagus - you can shave them (with a vegie peeler) or julienne them and mix with a salad dressing/vinaigrette.

The fava (broad) beans - can eat the whole thing if they are very small (from your own garden) or pod them and eat the whole beans - Italians love them raw with pecorino or parmesan cheese.

You can eat raw globe artichoke hearts - remove all the green "petals" and then when you are down to the heart it can just be sliced thinly and placed into acidulated water.  Dress with vinaigrette or lemon juice and oil, S&P - yum

This is a salad based on an Alain Ducasse recipe that has raw and cooked asparagus with black truffle - just more to show you can eat raw asparagus (even in the best restaurants in the world !!

Thanks. I've tried asparagus raw and it's great - the same consistency as zucchini rather than being crunchy like cabbage or broccoli. And I've just bought some green broad beans and have extracted the bean seeds and they taste different but quite nice. Thanks for the tips... I haven't yet found globe artichokes but will keep an eye out for them.

The salad looks great - will try that sometime too!
