Title: SHREK JUICE
Post by: faffa_70 on May 22, 2010, 05:16:18 pm
ok, my family have been after me for some time to share this with you. I have this every morning before breakfast now. I think this was the turning point when I was so sick a while back  :) The recipe came from my GL.

Shrek Juice

Ingredients

1 orange peeled
1/2 lemon peeled
1 handful of parsley (I use a mix of flat and curly)
1 handful of kale leaves
6-8 ice cubes
water to your desired consistency

Method

Place all ingredients except water into TMX bowl and blitz on speed 9 for 1 minute.

Add water and continue to blend on speed 9 for 1 minute or more (the longer you blend the smoother it will be)

Recipe Author: Elaine Finn - Group Leader WA (maybe someone else has passed it on before I don't know  :D)

where do you buy kale from?

Kale is virtually impossible to buy in Northern Tassie. We have to grow it from seed.  :-\

Don't worry we struggle to buy it here in WA too, I have only found it at one place down here, now have two lots growing in my garden  ;D ;D Grow some, as you don't have to wait for the leaves to get huge, you can use them when they are still young and small.

That's good to know. I'll have to dig out my Peter Cundall guide and see if it will grow in Tassie in winter. My Dietitian friend recommended replacing most of the dairy in our diet with kale (and a few other leafy greens, but mostly kale). The calcium in kale is apparently very easily absorbed by the body -  unlike cows milk which isn't easily digested with only one stomach ;).

Peter Cundall eats Kale one way or another EVERY day - and attributes it to his good health  ;) ;)

Can I add extra parsley instead of, or just leave out the kale til I can get some?  Woollies only sells it in the salad mix... haven't had a chance to look elsewhere yet.  Once moved and settled I think it may be somewhat easy to just grow it?

Really need some extra health  in this house right now!!!!!

Snoozie you could replace it with baby spinach - I often have to make up the kale amount with it if the grubs have been hard at work  :-)) :-))

hehe I am moving to central Qld and read that kale likes frost hehe  Might not have much luck growing it hehe

I only have frozen spinach lol

I would have this every day if i could. I picked up a couple of plants from the nursery, but it struggles to grow as I am constantly picking leaves off it. good to know it can be replaced with a bit of spinach as we have heaps of that! some days I think I use a bit too much parsley in as it dominates the taste  :D

lol is there a limit to how much you can drink or just because you run out of kale/other ingredients?? hehe

I actually enjoy the taste of it as there is the orange/lemon blend in there, so it doesn't taste like 'grass clippings'.

unlike cows milk which isn't easily digested with only one stomach ;).

i think i'm beginning to feel i have four stomachs  :D (oops, i shouldn't laugh about it  :'( )

We are really missing our green smoothies each morning.  We finally found out our son has a mild allergy to most green veg (goes rather spotty :o) so we are back to purple smoothies for the moment.  :)

Wow - My kids say they are too but I have never seen the spots??  ;) Have you got to the bottom of it Chelsea?? Could it be from pesticide residue or do you only use organic??

Now, I found this thread as I typed 'kale' in the search - someone gave me a box of kale out of their garden and I've been thinking, 'what the hec do you do with kale and who would ever grow it!'  :o I thought it was just a cheap garnish they use in the deli - well how wrong was I??  :-)) Lots of kale lovers here - I'll give it a whizz.   :D

Nay it is even nice lightly steamed as you would silver beet  ;) It also cooks down to just about nothing if you put it in casseroles etc - oh the art of deception lol

There is a natural chemical in green veggies that some children are allergic too.  He is able to tolerate lighter colour veggies like celery, but gets spots and irritation around his mouth with spinach, silverbeet etc. It is a shame because he is only two and really loves his veggies.  Hopefully the reaction will lessen as he grows older. Not much of a drama really though compared to the challenges some parents face with food allergies. :)

I have just found some kale at a local school which advertised in the local paper saying that they were having an organic growers market every fortnight from 9am-12pm. I found the freshest Ginger I have ever seen and some beautiful raw honey.
I was thinking about making some shrek juice. My kids just turned their noses up at it and I haven't even started it yet. I'll report back when I have.
I was walking around the stalls and was stopped in my tracks by..... A thermomix stall!!!!! They were making organic peach sorbets! It seemed like there was a fair bit of interest too. GO THERMOMIX!!!  ;D

Ok, the verdict..... 2 out of 3 kids actually tasted it which is amazing!! DH and myself loved it. I added some of the gorgeous Ginger I bought this morning. DH said he thought lime would go well too. Yummo

Thanks faffa_70. I've not been happy with my attempts of juice/smoothies and was wondering if green smoothies are just not for me.  I've always been a banana smoothie girl but in these hard economic times...  your recipe inspired me to have another go.  I love the orange lemon combo, and added some frozen berries & spinach.  Will have to start growing kale, it's the #1 nutritious food.

Thanks for reigniting this thread Vivaroo. I usually shudder at the thought of 'green drinks' despite knowing they are very healthy. This one looks like something I might be able to face. Will give it a try. Thanks Faffa. And also for the kale replacement tip. Much easier to get baby spinach.

I had to grow the kale as it was not readily available. Got it growing a treat, and then the snails moved in and demolished the whole lot. Read up about kale too cos its a "superfood".

For those of you based in Perth. I have bought Kale at Organic on Charles. I can't remember the address but it is in a little group of shops with an growers market.  I pass it coming off the freeway heading up Charles toward Dog Swamp. It is not as far as Cyclemania which is about 395 Charles.

I may have to grow some myself because we don't get anything exotic like Kale in our small country town.

I've noticed kale in our local woolworths lately.

Watch the raised garden bed CP. We had our beetroot and strawberries eaten right back overnnight by caterpillars that came in from no where. We're having a real battle with them.

I bought Kale the other day at the Subiaco markets.  There is also a single origin diary supplier there that has a herd of Jersey cows, sells the milk in glass bottles and it has only been pasteurized. They also have very nice ice cream.

Where can you buy kale in Sydney? I have looked in a lot of shops  - albeit unsuccessfully!  Anywhere in the eastern or northern suburbs?

The diary is called Sunnydale. Their office is in Nedlands. The might have a sale point south of the river if you give them a call.  They also do cream, yoghurt and flavoured milk.

At the moment in Melbourne you are Abe to buy Kales at Woolworths although the call it Tuscan cabbage.  I tried this juice in place of my normal green smoothie today and while nice I didn't feel I was getting enough of my fruit quota for the day. My standard morning smoothie at te moment has a small apple, an orange, half a banana, a few chunks of mango, almonds, chia, linseeds, sunflower seeds and about a quarter bunch of kale all mixed with water and ice. This keeps me going until lunch time and makes about 1 litre.  Just remember if using kale you do need to gie your body a rest and alternate with other greens if drinking them every day. I try and alternate with spinach or whatever else I can find that looks fresh.  While I can't say I love the smoothies I've certaianly seen the health improvements and also medical test results in the last six months to motivate me to drink them everyday.

If you put a right angle trim around the edge of your raised boxes it stops them from getting in... Ill try and find a photo

While in search for a photo i discovered a tip that mentions crushed eggshells around the base of te plant .. Apparently slugs and snails wont venture onto tge sharp edges.. Will be trying tgat one once the weather warms up a bit.... Minus 7 this morning brrrrrrr

I had this documentary recommended to me last night so it's very strange that it's on here today. The big difference is that he recommends a juicer so that all the fibre is removed but I thought the fibre was the part of the fruit that is most beneficial. I might need to do some further research. I have a green smoothie everyday and have been thinking of doing a few days of nothing but smoothie's to see if I notice a difference.

I am doing a two week stint of Shrek juice/ green smoothie but only once a day. I don't think I can exist on a juice fast!

It sure was a fantastic story but I have been wondering the same thing about the fibre???
Title: Re: SHREK JUICE

Can't see how the fibre could in any way be detrimental!  If anything it would fill you up so you'd have less fruit / veges and hence calories!  Not good long term though...
Title: Re: SHREK JUICE
Post by: Wonder on February 23, 2012, 09:43:52 am
Why could it be detrimental long term? After discussing green smoothies with a dietician the biggest benefit she could see was that the smoothies still contained all the fibre from the fruit and vegetables, and on this basis she was happy for me to have a smoothie as a breakfast replacement she wasn't keen for me to do that if I was juicing as she felt that amount of fruit and vegetables was not good in the longer term without the fibre. I'm a bit confuesd now  ???

Post by: CreamPuff63 on February 23, 2012, 09:57:59 am
in the back parts of my memory I seem to recall reading somewhere that the body is unable to/finds it difficult to absorb the goodness from the juice without the fibre...  ??? (I could be wrong)
Title: Re: SHREK JUICE
Post by: faffa_70 on February 23, 2012, 11:55:42 am
Having juice with out the fibre is also a sugar hit for your body. With the fibre it makes it a lower GI and reduces the insulin reaction from your body (I have been informed)

My dad is a diabetic and can't have juice from a juicer but can have a TM juice no problems.

People whose health is compromised (like people undergoing chemo) are often advised to have juice from a juicer as the body can access the nutrients quickly with out having to expend the energy to process the fibre. For most people though this wouldn't apply

I am no expert, this is only info that I have been given over time from various in the know people  ;)

You hit the nail on the head Faffa. The fibre is filling and lowers the GI.  Most dietitians will recommend that you eat your fruit rather than drink it because of the fibre.

Thanks everyone, it seems we are all on the same track. I'll stick with my green smoothies daily, i couldn't fast on them but  do find them great for breakfast and feel much better for them. Maybe the idea behind the juice is that they are for a shorter time as a cleanse rather than a long term habit.
