Title: Hello from India
Post by: trudy on November 20, 2012, 01:20:18 pm
Hi everyone well I have been here a few days now and slowly getting into the chaotic life of a wedding home in Jaipur, or the pink city as it's sometimes known.  We left Adelaide last Wednesday and flew to KL in Malaysia staying ovrnight before heading on to Delhi the nexxt evening.  We arrived 5 hours later and stayed overnight in a lovely Hotel.  Our friends had organised a car and driver to meet us at the airport, take us to the hotel and then the next day drive the 5 hours to Jaipur.  In Australia it would just take us 2 and a half hours to drive the same distance but with all the traffic, cows, camels, elephants and even some roadworks here it is a much longer journey but great to see the changes ssince wewere last here.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a traditional welcome.  Red dye with grains of rice were placed on our forheads, a piecce of sugar given to us to eat and there were ladies there to sing a greeting to us.
The next few days have been full of the starting ceremonies for the wedding.  As the groom had not undergone the tradional thread ceremony that would usually happen when he was young as he was at boarding school they decided to do it before he got married.  Most of the guests had not seen this performed as it's rare now to be done.
Tomorrow there is to a formal greeting when the brides parents come bringing gifts for the groom and his parents and a formal request for them to be present at the marriage.  Unlike us the grooms Mum is not allowed at the marriage but will attend the dinner in the evening.  This goes back to when the groom and his attendants rode out to another village or town to get married and Rajputs have continued this custom.  Nowsays some women will attend but these are mainly younger ones.  Hopefully I will be able to logon again and tell you a little more as we go.

I cant wait to see the photos of the bride in the wedding sari!  A close friend of mine had a traditional Indian wedding a few years ago, and the outfit the bride wears is breathtaking.  She also lent all her female friends saris, so we could all dress traditionally too.  I must say, a sari did not look as good on me as it does on Indian women  ;D

Glad to hear you are having such a wonderful time trudy.  Did all the food you took over there make it and get through customs OK?

Hi again, I am not sure if the email that I just sent got there so I appologise if I am resending it. For those who asked no we are not related to anyone here.  I have been a friend of the grooms father since I was around 12 and have been lucky to have remained friends.  We have been here lots of times and have also attended their daughters weddings.  They inturn have visited us in Australia and been out for our daughters weddings.  Karen, no we had no trouble bringing in the cheese ect.  Waayne did have a slight worry when we saw on the customs form a question asking if we had any seeds or dairy products with us but even though we declared them they didn't seem to care.
The past two days there have been workmen here errecting elaborate shades for todays Tilak ceremony.  This will be held this afternoon where the brides brother and parents will come bringing gifts - sweets, jewellery, sari's ect for the groom and his family then high tea will be served.  I must take a photo of where we are staying for you.  Just hope that these photo's make it this time. These photo's are of the thread ceremony from a couple of days ago.
A pooja or thread ceremony is usually held when a boy is around 5 years of age.  This ceremony signifys the starting of his education hence there was a slate and chalk used in the ceremony.  After the two hour service at which he was also presented by the guests with food and money to "sustane" him during the 14 days that he goes off by himself into the forest he had to pretend to run away!!!!!  Most boys do not go through this today and Aayushman hadn't as he was away at boarding school.  So most of the guests that were present hadn't witnessed this pooja before.

Thought I would send you some more photo's from the Tilak & Lagan ceremony that was held yesterday.  This is when the brides brother brings gifts for the groom.  Today a relation of the groomswill take gifts for the bride.  After this they held a high tea then there was dancing, drinking and dinner although I don't believe too many ate dinner as they had all drunken too much.
The photo of the grooms nephew tells a thousand words - he was fed up with it all!!!!!

Yes Judy, in some shape or another.  These people are Rajput's and members of Jaipur's royal family so it's important to them to keep up tradition.  We have been told that this generation will most probably be the last ones to keep this up though.  Our friends daughter told us this morning that when her daughters get married she won't be doing all this, but who know's as it's a long time off.
The wedding its self is a small affair unlike most weddings here.  It's being held at the Raj Mahal Palace Hotel which was the home of one of the three wives of the past  Maharaja and there has only been 400 people invited.

That's  amazing Trudy.
We can't comprehend that number of people at our type of weddings!.
My last one was DS almost 2 years ago and they had 120 people which was more than enough in our culture..
It was lovely though  :D

I may have missed some postings so this question may have come up already.
Do you have Indian family?
I have one SIL who is Indian. In fact my family is very multicultural since leaving Scotland in 1981  :)

No, we are not related to Indians.  I have know the grooms father since I was around 12 and have stayed friends since then - I am now 58!!!  We have been lucky to have been able to come to his daughters weddings and several others here as well and they have been to Australia for our daughters.

Hi, well the wedding is now over so thought I would send you a quick peak of the day.  The first photo is the groom and his youngest nephew leaving his home on a horse.  The second is once they and another nephew have climbed onto an elephant for the last part of the journey to the hotel where the marriage is to take place.
The next one is the bride arriving for the ceremony - she is wearing a lannga which is traditional Rajistani dress of a long skirt, blouse and a veil.  It was very heavily beaded with blue peacocks.  The last one was taken at the dinner in the evening.  The bride had changed into a red lannga for the evening.

Unlike Australian weddings here no one watches the service.  They are tucked away in a corner and the guests just go on eating and drinking.

At the dinner in the evening the bride and groom sit on a podium where they receive good wishes from the guests before mingling a little.

Hi Moptop, At all the lunch & dinners for the wedding there has been a buffet.  We try not to eat at these affairs because they use outside people to cater for the functions and it's a sure way to get sick if you are going to.  The food for the wedding night was a large mixture of traditional Indian food - both meats and vegetables - at most Indian weddings meat would not be served. There was also pasta dishes and pizzas then icecreams, and Indian sweetmeats.  Lots of different fruit drinks, yoghurt drinks, tea & coffee as well as lots and lots of alchol.  These people just love their spirits as well as beer!!!!!
Yesterday the bride arrived here to officially meet all the grooms relatives and to stay the night.  The bed was decorated with strings of flowers and I will put up a photo later.  They are going to leave in a couple of days but it has been nice meeting and getting to know her - such a lovely girl and although it's an arranged marriage they have been engaged for a year and know each other so well and are very much in love!!!

Hi everyone,  yesterday got out and about and visited a couple places.  The first photo was taken on the road to Amber Fort which is about 11kms from Jaipur.  The next is the Lake palace which because they have had so much rain this year the first two stories are under water.  We then returned to Jaipur to the City Palace.  The pink building is the Palace of the Winds which was built so that the ladies of the court could look out and see what was happening and the last one is of an artist from the city palace.

Well we are at the tail end of our trip.  We arrived in Penang, an island of the Malaysian coast a few days back and have just been chilling out.  It's 9 years since we were last here and there has been a lot of changes.  Yesterday Wayne and I attended a cooking demo at the hotel.  We were the only ones that attended and the chef showed us how to make Penang Char Koay Teow.  This is flat rice noodles to which he added a sauce, prawns, squid, beansprouts, beaten egg and garlic chives.  I have the recipe if anyone wants it.  I have included a photo of him making it (only took 7 minutes) and also the finished dish.  The other two were taken at  the hotel.

Trudy glad to hear you arrived safely in Penang after your amazing trip in India.
Can I ask what hotel you are staying in as DH and I are taking all of our family to Singapore and either Penang or Club Med Bintan in April for 11 nights combined. A few of them don't want to do club med so looking like it may be Penang.
We have looked at Shangri la and Golden Sands as they both have good facilities for all the children.
Would appreciate your opinion  :)
