Title: Lost Members?
Post by: meganjane on March 28, 2010, 11:19:10 am
I was just looking at the members list and there's so many members who've registered and have never contributed ever. I know quite a few lurk and post after some time, but there seems to be a huge number of non active members.

I was just thinking is it worth our moderators sending a bulk message to those who haven't posted in case they've lost the link or forgotten their forum name and password?
Is it easy to do that or too laborious a process?

It would be good to gain these members back. Shoot me down in flames if you think that's a silly idea!! ;D

I agree with you MJ and don't understand why you would join a forum and not contribute in some way so I have wondered myself why there are all those names with no postings against them.

Oh, I'm glad you feel the same way Judy! I think perhaps people forget the URL, or they get a new computer and can't remember the password or lots of other reasons. I would just like to re-connect with these people.

Great post here. I think the same also... Thanks for reminding me about this.

I will send out an email to all memebers this week

Thanks

OH NOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  only kidding, just DH fried my computer over the weekend  :'( :'( :'( :'( and now I only have my iphone for the next little while to get on here. How exciting for us all that you are going to do that MM, think of all the new posts we could end up with very soon  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Think MM did this a few months ago - but certainly worth trying to encourage more users.

We had book giveaways and other incentives before, but still the same old crowd.  At least the crowd has grown.

I agree. I'm sure that for one reason or another people drop by the way side. If members don't wish to post they can still be forum guests. I know that I am not as frequent a member on a couple of sites I used to use since I got 'Termite'.

if I log on as a guest I can't get the pictures, but if I sign in I can see the pics - maybe thats one of the reasons why people join.

Or they find out they are incubating no.3 :o after quite emphatically stating that '2 will do, thank you' to all and sundry and morning sickness has everything tasting like sawdust. Too ashamed to admit that Hermes was actually put in the cupboard for a while :-[ . Tonight he made me some steamed rice, so I think he still loves me. :)

Yay, one came back to say hello.  Nice to hear from you LA Mummy and congratulations on No. 3 (oops).   Please sit Hermes on the benchtop so that you will use him more often.  You are lucky he cooked the rice for you OK - I'd go on strike if I was banished to a cupboard.  ;D ;D ;D  Hope you are feeling better soon  :-* :-*

Seems ooops are very common.  Mine was no 1 - been married 4 years but I'd just started uni.  When people ask whether she was planned, I say that yes we planned on having her, but she had a different timetable to her parents.

That's a lovely way of putting it cathy! Speaking from one who was an oops baby!

Late Nov/Early Dec.

I'm mentally going with 1st Dec because my lost babe was due in Nov and I just need to be in a different headspace.

Twitterpated and I discussed this topic on Sat evening - in the short time that we have been a part of the forum we came up with a few members who have not been around of late  :)  :)

Yes, I've often thought of and looked for several members who are no longer active - it's sad to see regular members no longer posting.  I know it's terribly nosy, but I would love to know what has happened to them.
Title: Re: Lost Members?

When you look at the names quite a few people have never posted and have been members for over 12 months.
Title: Re: Lost Members?
Post by: meganjane on December 13, 2011, 05:26:48 am
I guess a lot of people just lurk and grab recipes. It's a shame they can't contribute.
Title: Re: Lost Members?
Post by: Moo2 on December 14, 2011, 10:48:30 am
I find I don't contribute all that much because there are so many wonderful people saying it all for me. Also, as I am no good at "experimenting" I tend to follow existing recipes rather than coming up with something new. Boring, I know, but I do really appreciate all the wonderful posts.  :)

Jenny, you contribute to this forum by asking questions and commenting on recipes you have tried - that's what this forum is all about.  You are doing your bit so don't class yourself as boring.

Those words exactly describe me as well.  However this forum needs and thrives on all types of members, if we all contributed recipes but no one commented on those recipes we wouldn't know what's good or bad about them or how we could tweak them to get great variations (or, at times, not so great variations).  I know I rely entirely on the forum recipes and on all the subsequent comments left by those who are better at cooking and testing recipes than I am.  I do feel guilty that I can't add anything re. new and exciting recipes, but accept that that is just me and there are others who constantly add to the recipe bank so perhaps that evens out the scales somewhat.

i love this forum, i am a younger more inexperienced cook so dont feel i have as much to offer as you lovely experienced cooks. i comment on things when i can but mainly come in and have a quick browse when i get a few spare minutes, it is a part of my day and i couldnt go through a day without popping in and catching up on everything

I don't really get time to try new recipes but love using the ones n here and commenting whenever I can. I love that there are so many people willing to contribute and share in so many different ways. Maybe one day I'll have more time at home to experiment and then will be able to contribute more.
Title: Re: Lost Members?
Post by: meganjane on December 17, 2011, 01:41:39 pm
When I started this thread, I wasn't criticising people for not contributing recipes and ideas! I meant contributing comments, questions, feedback etc etc. :-[

Just nice to hear when people have tried something and how it went for them. You don't have to be an experienced cook or anything like that to contribute to the forum; there are many ways to contribute.

Well, after reading this topic, was guilted into posting for the first time!  I've Thermie and lurked, and tried and lurked some more since December 2010, but have never posted, like PP's I don't feel like I've got anything of value to contribute, but never thought of how it would be perceived by others!!

Haven't made a NY resolution, but maybe it should be to become an active contributor to this wonderful forum!

Cheers

Amanda

Shinyknight, I have been a member for about 1 1/2 years now and only contributed perhaps 2 - 3 recipes, all my other postings have been comments, thoughts or ideas - I'm not a great cook, but I do like to be involved if I feel I have something to say that isn't too inane.

Welcome to the forum, you're obviously familiar with both it and your TMX so I think you will probably find that you'll start contributing more and more now that you have taken the step to join us.

The girls are right Shinyknight, now you've made the first step the next ones will be so much easier.  Just a comment here or there on any of the recipes you find on the forum or from the books and before you know it you will be wanting to post photos of your meals etc like the rest of us.  It's a great little community here and such a joy to be part of it - a big welcome to you.

Welcome Shinyknight! Great that you have made a resolution to be active on the forum. I love hearing about other people, where they come from, what they do, what they cook and eat. I live in the country, so don't get to talk to many different people in person.

I love this forum for the way it gives me that opportunity to communicate with people from all over the world.

When I got my Thermie Meagan had written in the back of my EDC a few websites ect that I might find helpful. I asked to join this one straight away and I don't post much. I find it an invaluable source of information but it is very daunting! Everyone knows everyone and I kind of feel like I am intruding. I am an oddball and very strange to a lot of people so I find it hard to always comment and don't know how my comments might be taken on the interwebs! Getting a new Thermie can be overwhelming and people might join and then forget. Also like I think it was CP mentioned you can't see the pics unless you are logged in. I am all about the pics!!

You can only get to know others if you join in and made a few comments Nighteyes_fitz which you are doing.  On any forum you will get a group of people who have been on there since day 1 and seem to be very good friends - our forum is no different but we welcome newcomers with open arms and take people as we find them.  It's nice to be different but you can't be too different from the rest of us because you have a Thermomix  ;D  Just enjoy, join in and let us decide if you are 'strange' or not. We have had 'strange' people before if it makes you feel any better ;)

Big welcome, and as JD said 👍for coming out and introducing yourself. We'll get to know you once you start posting. A lot of people think I'm weird too 👉🙍👈 ha ha. If you don't log in and just remain a guest, you'll miss out on a lot of photos that people post cos that can't be viewed. So that's one of the perks of being a member 😃

Please don't feel left out. The reason we all seem to 'know' each other is that we spend half the day cooking with our machines and the other here.  :) :). It can be very addictive.

We would love to know what you have been cooking, and how things turn out for you. Have you had any major disasters? Most of us have. I'm good at making coleslaw soup!  Too long wizzing.

GRB - believe it or not, a great many of us started off exactly like you - not sure of what to do, never been a member of a forum before, etc.  Well ... we soon learned.  If you are not sure about something, just ask and someone will soon respond.  The help and support we get from our fellow members is invaluable - on a wide range of different subjects, but mainly TMX related - after all, that is what we are all addicted to (almost as much as we are addicted to this forum).

I can be a bit overwhelming at times, as are all the Internet related social sites. I tend to have waves of participation and lulls as I get overwhelmed with it / life in general (this happens with me & Facebook and Twitter too), but I wouldn't be without this forum even if I don't use even 1/6 of the recipes here. Wonderful people and place.
