Title: New Thermomix Book.....Quick Fix In The Thermomix.
Post by: achookwoman on December 26, 2011, 03:31:40 am
A new book of Thermomix recipes is about to hit the market.  It is  Quick Fix In the Thermomix.  by  Alyce Alexandra  I have been lucky to be given a copy.  I have not as yet made anything from it but the recipes are simple, straight forward, well set out and each is accompanied by a photo.  The Photos are close ups and beautiful.
The aim of the book is for simple recipes that can be made in 30 mins or a little more and are healthy.  Cyndi O'Meara supports the book.
As far as I can tell, Alyce does not 'pinch' and adapt others recipes.  This I find refreshing.  The 'blurb" on the back states that these are gourmet recipes to be created at home. If this is the case then Forum Thermomix should consider changing its name to Gourmet Forum Thermomix.  This is not to put down this interesting book,  but rather reflects the high standard of many of the Forum recipes.
I have no idea what the cost will be but, $2 from the sale of each book will go to the charity, The Hunger Project Australia.
There is a web site    www.alycealexandracookbooks.com    I haven't had a chance to check this out.

Unfortunately we are off for a weeks hol early tomorrow and I will not be able to test any of the recipes until i come home. Blast. :-)) :-)) :-))..

Happy New Year to all Forum members.

Chookie, in your opinion, is it worth $50 from your quick look through?

Like JulieO I would like to know whether it is worth $50

Thanks DG xxx

Gosh we are getting a few TMX cookbooks around. This one looks interesting too. I THINK I will wait for Tenina's book.

Julie,  I would pay $50 for it ,( I am a cook book junkie), but you would have to include postage.  When i first looked at it I estimated that it was in the $40/60 bracket.  There are many similar recipes on the Forum,  but these are all  just a bit different.  For example,  there is a recipe for Creme Fraiche,  the difference being that it is placed in a thermos,  where as I just leave it on the bench.  I think there are only 3 bread recipes, I always look at these first. ;D ;D There is a sweet bun recipe which i will try first as it has 14 g. of yeast.  this seems too much for the amount of flour,  however it is heavily spiced and this will retard the yeast.  In the end it will all come down to how well the recipes have been tested.

DG,  yes .  However i have packed the book to take away tomorrow.  In a day or two ,  I will post the index,  however i don't think this will tell you very much.  I feel that a lot of care has been put into the TMX process of each recipe. And you would have to decide if the recipes are different enough to what is available on the forum.

I think the question that should be asked, is if i am going to buy just 1 new TMX book,  should I wait to see Tenina's.?  I know that I will buy Tenina's as from looking at her Blog,  I know it will be very creative with very interesting ideas and recipes.

Chookie, we will all be waiting with baited breath for you to return and try some of the recipes.  When the author is unknown, it does tend to make us a little more cautious but I have signed up to the link you gave us and have printed out the Strawberry Yoghurt Sorbet - I could only find 3 recipes on that site at the moment.

Thanks so much Chookie for your reply.  I too will wait for your reviews and then decide.  I'm really looking forward to Tenina's book and will buy that regardless of what the index is  ;D  I just know they will be good recipes.  :D

My mum's the same too. She's even go so far as to compile a book of her favourite recipes for me with a special message in it. It's to be given to me when she "drops off the perch" (her words). I'm not in any hurry to see it I must say.

My Mum was the same and when she 'fell off the perch' I had double ups of lots of books.

Short and Sweet is a great Dan Lepard book.

I'm not buying any non-TM cookbooks from now onwards. Easy when I get most of my recipes from the forum, and any news about TM related cookbooks are quickly announced. As I have a Kindle, the temptation to buy in the book shop has reduced greatly.

Since I bought my Kindle I hardly ever go I to an op shop anymore and  I can walk happily by the book shops. Great money saver.

I have mine  ;D ;D ;D looks like I will be putting in another order  ;)

I haven't had a big chance to have a look but there is a recipe to an opening and a picture of every recipe YAY!!!

I made the Coconut Banana Bread yesterday - Really nice but a bit too sweet for me (I am that way). I did have the thought when I was adding the sugar that it would be too sweet (should have gone with it lol) but will be making it again and will just reduce the sugar for me.  :)

mmmmm I so want this book but also want MWOC, Short and Sweet and Teninas book too. MMMMMMM what to do? I think I am going to put $25 a week away and save to buy a few cookbooks. That way I am not spending alot at once and will wait until I have saved the money before buying. Also gives me a chane to read the reviews on here first before making a rash decision.

DG, you could start by buying MWOC and Dinner Spinner in app form - that would only be about $16-$17 for the two.  If you PM me your e-mail address, I could send you a current pricelist of the books available from your Thermomix consultant.

Hello everyone!

Alyce Alexandra here! Great to now be part of the forum, and great to see some dialogue surrounding my new cookbook. Any questions, please feel free to ask me directly on the forum, or email me at alyce@alycealexandracookbooks.com.

Cecilia, currently looking into the shipping status of your order. As your order was placed on Monday, hard to say when it will arrive, but    this particular courier company Interparcel usually exceeds expectations. Fingers and toes crossed that it arrives tomorrow! All the best with your Thermomix business.

I have just received my book and had a quick flick - my initials thoughts are it looks lovely

I just wanted to say dealing with Alyce & Loryn from Alyce Alexandra Cookbooks has been a pleasure  :)
I ordered my book well before Xmas and asked for delivery to my Post Office box.  Apparently they always deliver the books via courier and not by post (wise move maybe??).  But as I had only supplied my PO box number and not my street address, they sent my book before Xmas via Australia Post.

My book never arrived  :(
Who knows where it went!
We have several things posted to our PO box every week and have never had a problem.
After I contacted Alyce to advise I hadn't received my book, Loryn promptly arranged for a courier to delivery me another copy.
I received prompt, friendly and professional service.

Now I'm off to read the book and see what to cook first :)

Well, this one certainly looks attractive, mcmich.  Since I've had mine (just a couple of hours) and have had a chance to read properly, a couple of things have annoyed me - "goats cheese" with no apostrophe - "less raspberries" - but generally, I am finding the recipes engaging.

Post by: cookie1 on January 09, 2012, 04:29:50 am
Ooh apostrophes are my pet thing. I can get a bit agro over them. I saw a dreadful one the other day in Myer. A great big sign that had an apostrophe where it was not needed. I think the word was "get's."  I saw cocos palms advertised on a truck the other day as coco's palms.  Must get off my soapbox.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets annoyed about grammatical and spelling errors in published documents and books.  It's just plain sloppy but is becoming more and more common.  In a way I can understand it, your eye always "sees" what it wants, but it is still off-putting when you come across these errors.  I find heaps on my kindle and it drives me nuts.

Both DH and I completed our apprenticeships at a newspaper and we often have little competitions to "find the mistake" in printed documents and on signs. Proofreading the copy was one of our jobs and we had to be very thorough or face the editor and manager if you let one slip through.

Hi Frozzie,

I am your mystery lady! Please check out my introduction on the forum -http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=8504.0

I have been long meaning to put a bit of a blurb on myself on my website but haven't prioritised it. I am a long standing Thermomix customer obsessed with all things cooking! It is through this passion that my love of the Thermomix developed - as I am sure you know, it just makes so many things possible. For many years now I have been creating, testing and photographing my own TM recipes, which with the help of photographers and a design team have now been published in "Quick Fix in the Thermomix."

I am based in Melbourne and know many of the group leaders and consultants down here. My business partner and sister Loryn has also been doing much of the promotion work so I would say by now more people may know her than me!

More on me to follow on my website - I will keep you updated.

Thank you for the interest, any further questions please do not hesitate to ask!

Happy Cooking,
Alyce

Alyce, I know you can't turn back time but after having a TMX and being so in love with it for 7 years I'm surprised you have not joined the forum long before now. The timing to me makes it look like you decided this would be a good place to sell a few books without too much effort and no cost, a definite marketing/sales move. Good luck to you but it's a shame we haven't seen you on here before offering some of your wisdom.

Actually the issue of adequately testing the recipes was something in my mind as well. AWW, for example, triple tests their recipes to ensure that they work every time - tweaking recipes on the forum is great and valuable but we don't pay for the recipes. But if we are paying for the cookbook I would like a bit more information on the author's background, experience other than a general interest in the product.

Hi Wonder, Frozzie and Courton,

Thanks for your feedback. I recently joined the forum after a customer mentioned that there were some questions posted on the forum that perhaps I could be helpful in answering. Blogs, forums and the like are not something I had previously participated in, but I am now seeing the richness of information that is shared on them and intend to partake in the future.

The majority of recipes have been my own creation rather than direct conversions, inspired by many different chefs, cookbooks and beautiful restaurant meals.

The recipes have been perfected over a number of years and have been more than triple tested. I have also had other TM users test recipes prior to printing the book. The photographs were all taken more recently once I decided to embark on this cookbook adventure. Cyndi O'Meara has publicly endorsed the book after receiving an advance copy and cooking many of the recipes. I understand you cannot be certain the recipes work without trying a few yourselves, but the feedback I have received so far has been really positive.

Obviously with such a wealth of information and recipes available on the forum not everyone is going to be interested in purchasing my book, but many have acknowledged it as a worthy addition to their cookbook collection.

All the best,
Alyce

i'm glad i'm not the only one curious about alyce alexandra's background. when i asked about her background earlier either in this thread or another, there wasn't any response and it was as if my comment was invisible. i did ask my consultant about her and she said she had never heard of her before, unlike tenina. so she felt safe buying a pile of tenina's books, but is unsure about buying alyce's sight unseen, which is fair enough.
i'm going to sit back and watch for the time being.

Hi thermoheaven,

Looking back on the thread I wasn't actually on the forum when your comment was posted. Please see previous comments re who I am!

All writers start somewhere :) Unlike Tenina I have not had the history of being an employee of Thermomix head office. I am simply a passionate long standing user of the Thermomix. When I brought my TM21 back in 2005 there was no Thermomix forum, blog, facebook etc. There was simply one cookbook inclusive of 70 basic recipes, which was great to get started with. However, very quickly, I started to create my own recipes and adapt favourites from my family collection out of necessity. This cookbook is the Thermomix cookbook I've been waiting for!

Happy cooking,
Alyce

Twitterpated, your comments reminded me of this  (http://www.engrish.com/)web site.

Got a good laugh out of some of those. Who would of thought there was a whole site dedicated to this.

Guys, let's just give Alyce's book a chance to be reviewed by those who have bought it.  It would be appreciated if you could start a new topic here (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?board=48.0) for each recipe review and then subsequent reviews for the same recipe can be added to yours. This book has it's own thread (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=8507.0) which will list all the reviews as they come to hand.

Well said JD!

I've had my book for a few days now and have short-listed quite a few recipes to try.  No new recipes this week though as back to work after the Christmas holidays and my OH has been in hospital for surgery (and tomorrow one of our dogs is off to the vet for surgery also!).

Hoping to make something from the book on the weekend and will definitely post a review.

Will do JD, I was happy with the contents as to me it was ds friendly :)

I am sure the recies will be great, i will review them IMHO as I do all the recipes. We all have different tastes etc, but if ds likes  a recipe and we do, fantastic, makes life easy for me :D

It's refreshing that new Thermomix books are becoming available in Australia, they are all totally different and very different from the books published by Thermomix HO

Maddy for me its just this appearing out of nowhere with absolutely on trace anywhere them poof à book and all That goes with it and also unknown authors dont go around charging That price and often évén IF you havé Nevers heard of them you CAN always find something about them...look i wish her all thé best but i do find it à bit naïve to buy à book and at 50 aud IF im not mistaken just because its thermomix
From somebody That nobody has ever heard of....Normally you Will always find peuple talking about them on forums etc but nada. I dont care IF your à blogger or mum at home and do a cookbook...i Know à number of people on this forum who would succeed at just That but in todays âge im sorry word always gets out somewhere ..

Nô offense Alyce like i said i wish her all thé best but thats m'y opinion and i think you all Know by now im not really thé little sheep That follows thé herd...lol

I Will however wait for reviews but find thé book à bit pricey for somebody so unknown...my opinion but im pretty sûre im not thé only one  :)

Ps maddy you dont count as you buy everything lol  :P

OK I'm going to lay it on the line. Here's my thoughts:

Positives:
Add 1 point there is another TM cookbook out on the market
Add 1 point if its not connected to Vorwerk and hostessing parties
Add 1 point if the book is well priced
Add 1 point if the book is well presented
Add 3 points if the recipes are user friendly and delicious

Negatives:
Take 1 point if its a new book controlled by Vorwerk and subject to conditions like hostessing a party
Take 1 point if the author has never been on the forum until the book is planned and being released, and to promote it
Take 2 points if the author only logs on to answer queries about their $$$ interests ie. in relation to their products and nothing else that is happening on the forum
Take 1 point if the author never offers any cooking advice in relation to their recipes (or others here for that matter)
Take 1 point if the author does a link from the forum to their website
Take 2 points if the author doesn't give out a few freebies on the forum for all the free advertising and marketing they are getting away with - cos its expensive in the real world and they know it

(ie. there is the chance to be -1 point if the author falls soley into the negative zone)

I agree Maddy. I think the more Thermomix books out there the better. I only wish I had started developing one with a close friend over a year and a half ago when we first started throwing the idea around.

I am the one who contacted Alyce, initially about placing a bulk order for my fellow Thermomix consultant team members. I also told her in our emails back and forth about the thread here and suggested it might be good for her to sign up and answer some of the questions raised. She had no idea there was a thread about her and her book on the forum and I think it is always best to get info from as close to the source as possible.

I came across the Facebook page for this book a couple of months ago and had been keeping an eye on it. Just before Christmas I sent an email to my team asking if anyone was interested in ordering with me ... we ordered 20 - this equated to $37 a book each with shipping as there was a special on.

I liked that it is a book that also gives back - $2.00 per book to the World Hunger Program whilst it doesn't seem a lot I suspect after all costs are covered is a fair contribution.

I also liked that the shipping was absolutely cheap for 20 books - it equated to $2.00 per book. Most people would charge more than that because people expect to pay more and they then pocket the extra .

I still need to cook more from the book (too darn hot at the moment ) but so far I have enjoyed the book and think it was worth the money.I have paid the same amount of money for a TMX AUST book that isn't hardback and nicely bound and most certainly doesn't have a coloured picture for EVERY recipe.

To be fair, not every one is into technology, blogging, Facebook etc until they find there is a need for it. They start the journey with a simple web page then find to SEO the page it helps to have a Facebook page for example and they are then enlightened from there  (e.g. Meagan passing the info on)

My two bobs worth for tonight  ;)

I am looking forward to receiving my book. Hope it comes before we go to  kalbarri.

Having just returned from a trip to Melbourne and eating out twice per day, i would say the recipes would be good. We ate in many different restaurants and not once did we have a bad meal, all the meals were of a high standard and well priced compared to perth. My 2 fav places were neil perrys rockpool & number 8. Alyce is from Melbourne so I am sure the recipes will be of a high standard.

CP3, you have made a number of very valid points. All I was trying to do was to obtain more info eg have the recipes being tested etc.
Normally, this info is usually available ...at least by asking these questions it gives ALyce an opportunity to answer these queries and tell us a bit more about herself and her experience.
Title: Re: New Thermomix Book.....Quick Fix In The Thermomix.
Post by: DizzyGirl on January 12, 2012, 06:55:48 am
I have read all the posts in the section and they are all valid. Atm I am not willing to pay $50 on a book I know little about. I am on a tight budget which enables us to pay our mortgage off faster. I have so many recipes from here to try first. I have however put it on my wish list. I allow myself $10 per week to spend on my wish list. If it costs more than $10 I have to wait til I have the required amount before purchasing (or wait til my birthday or christmas). I do the same with DS. He has a wish list and gets $10 per week pocket money for doing chores.

DG that is an excellent idea. I do something similar. The money is for wants and not needs. Quite often when I have the money I don't want the item any more. It gives me thinking time.
Title: Re: New Thermomix Book.....Quick Fix In The Thermomix.
Post by: DizzyGirl on January 12, 2012, 09:32:50 am
Cookie I often change my list as after awhile I find that the things I want aren't really necessary. I used to buy alot of things on a whim, especially if they were on sale. I thought I was getting a bargain, but really I was wasting my money. I also want DS to realise the value of money and that we can't hae everything we want.

The  Fresh Corn, Pancetta & Chives  p78 gets a big tick for tastiness and ease. Serves 4 apparently but it sounds like Alyce doesn't have a son with hollow legs so tonight it served just 3. Tropical Sorbet p198 was smooth like icecream and a guilt free dessert cos there was no added sugar (100% frozen fresh fruit). There was only 3 people  eating tonight and there was stacks of this left over so I've put into ice cube trays for another night.

Thanks CP63 - I'm really looking forward to this book. Have ordered it and it should be here soon.   For those who have not the joys of keeping up with the eating habits of SWHL's (sons with hollow legs), particularly when they're heading towards 7' tall! you really must factor in 2-3+ serves extra per meal :D  One of the interesting things about SWHLs is that when they start refusing that extra helping . . or saying they're not hungry . . you can bet your bottom dollar they're coming down with something - long before there are any other symptoms ;)

Wonder, the 2 TMX classes were organized by my Consultant,  Anita. The first one without the TMX was for friends,  and the second one was to raise money for Cancer Research.  I only charge for the cost of the ingredients,  usually $20/30, The class take home what they make and we have Morning tea,  Lunch and Afternoon Tea.  We usually make 3/4 different types of bread.  All food is TMX.  The class starts at 10.00am and finishes about 3/4.00 pm.

I was up until 1.15 am this morning reading this recipe book and making a list of the things I would make from it. My list has 64 items on it and even though some of them are similar to what we can find here on the forum, because there are lovely pictures for every recipe, it just makes you want to try Alycy's version.  It is a beautifully put together book and one she should be and is rightfully very proud of.  I have no hesitation of recommending people put this on their list of 'wants'.  So many easy recipes but with a handful of restaurant quality recipes thrown in but not too many of them to make the book unsuitable for the everyday cook. I have been shopping this morning and bought lamb fillets and pork spareribs for a couple of the recipes so that when I am ready to try some of these recipes I know I have the main ingredient for a couple of dishes. Thumbs up from me.

For those who have both this and the Dani Valent book, which would you advise if we could only get one? it sounds like this has more everyday meals. Is there anywhere we can see a copy prior to purchasing? I'm a little nervous about buying site unseen as I was  dissapointed in the quality of the Dinner Spinners book and wouldn't have bought it if I had actually seen a copy first, I would however have been happy to just buy the app.

Wonder,  depends on what you like.  I have now had 3 things from Dani's book that either didn't work or I didn't like.  I have made 2 small things from Quick Fix,  both good.  So my personal preference would be this one. These recipes are mostly simple,  with easy instructions,  also the photos are good.  They give you a good idea of what to expect.  Like Judy,  there are plenty I want to make.

I have both. Given a choice I would pick Quick Fix. The recipes are easy and more "family friendly", and I have already cooked more from this book than Dani's book. See page one of this thread to follow chookies link on details about this book. There are 3 sample recipes which will give you an idea of how the book is presented.

I had a good read of In the Mix before sending it onto a friend in the UK and that was enough for me to decide it wasn't for me. I was reluctant to buy Quick Fix too as the index didn't do anything for me but having had the opportunity to receive mine and reading every recipe, looking at the pictures - yes, it is the preferred option for sure.

So far am delighted with it!! :) :) :)

They make lovely gifts for Thermomixing friends.  If you order more than one at a time, you don't get all that giftwrapping treatment for each one, but you do receive a much-appreciated discount for buying more at a time.

I just received a 'catch-up' email from my consultant and she recommends this book for those 'challenged to find different meals' outside the EDC. She's even included a link to the website - does this mean Alyces' book has been endorsed by Thermomix Australia? Seeing my consultant tonight at a demo, hopefully she'll bring a copy so I can take a look.

Hi deedub,

Fantastic to see your consultant recommends Quick Fix in the Thermomix! At this stage head office are not promoting the book, I am selling it through my own website :)

Any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

All the best,
Alyce

I really like this book.  Have already posted a couple of dishes I made for dinner last night which were a success.  Will be trying quite a few recipes and also like the health aspects highlighted.

My consultant didn't have a copy to show me but she has seen it and has ordered one for herself - I think that's a pretty good recommendation!

Great to see people making their own successes in life while using Thermomix. This is only going to grow as a trend. PLUS of course it helps to sell more Thermomix machines everywhere.

The internet changes everything and companies who once micro-managed the activities of their sales people will have a harder time of it as common sense will (I hope) prevail. The Thermomix is a high quality tool that is growing in popularity --  like a good car, good computer tablet, or a good camera. When sales agents are restricted from suggesting certain cookbooks to their customers, it's like telling a Mercedes salesperson not to recommend a great road-trip travel guide. Or -- imagine if you just bought your first DSLR camera and the store were not allowed to recommend certain photography books.  ???

It's heartening to see progressive demonstrators who recognize, appreciate, and endorse great products such as this book and Tenina's. Such books will help all customers have more fun with their Thermomix "investment". Great job!

Has anyone tried the granola from this book? I want to give it a go but it looks a bit on the sweet side to me, thinking the cinnamon might be a bit overpowering?

I bought Alyce's book from Tenina at the cooking class I went to in Albany.

I haven't made anything from it yet, but it does look lovely. I hadn't made any of the recipes from Tenina's book, either, until I went to her class. I really have to watch, taste and see before I'll try something new.

I'm like that too MJ, I'm not very adventurous with different foods. Where as DH would try and eat almost anything. :)

I did make the Hollandaise recently, but that's it! I looked again today, but nothing makes me go, "Ooh, I want to make that".
Hopefully Alyce will come to WA and do some classes.

I just downloaded the iBooks version - I've had my Thermie for over a year now, I can't believe I haven't bought the book book version by now.

I've been bookmarking recipes for the last two hours after cross referencing to reviews from this forum - I can't wait to get mixing!!

So impressed with what I've been looking at.

Received this as a present from my brother and was not expecting it at all. So excited though and looking forward to trying out quite a few recipes.

I love all the health tips included at the bottom of most recipes too such as spinach being good to curb sugar cravings.
