I can't remember if this was the right thread but yesterday Amy was talking about her fear of needles. On some doctor show on TV today they said one way to reduce the pain is to cough during the shot. (Obviously to tell your nurse you are going to do this prior to sticking the needle in, otherwise it may end up in the wrong spot)

1. It is a distraction from the pain, and tricks your body to concentrate more on coughing
2. It increases the blood pressure slightly which in turns decreases the pain

There you go, just saved you a hypnotists fee!

Lordy give me strength. The pain  involved in most injections would be equal l  to a mosquito bite. The anticipation of receiving a needle  raises the blood pressure thereby minimising the the  sting of the needle in any case.

As a nurse having given maybe thousands if injections  over many years the advice i would give, would be to smack the mother's of children in the head  while giving the kid the needle.

in case of teenag girls  I would say put your big  girls blouse on. Usually girls are no problem if the mother is not there.

With teenage boys I would say grip your d**k.  Adult men were no problem as they would  be looking down my unbuttoned uinform.  Sometimes worked with teenage boys too if their mothers  weren't holding their hands,

Get A grip people.  Cough at your peril. You have no idea where I would stick that needle but I do.

When I was training we were told to use oranges, given needles and syringes and sent outside to practice, while the tutors had a smoke .. As there were a few "older " students we used to go outside the nurses quarters , light up a non American tobacco  cigarette and practice on each other. All was calm and collected and we became instant experts.

Gert, I would make a great nurse like you (I think), I'm rough and ready and a no-nonsense sort of person. Ask my DH  :-))

Judy you are a nurse. The best kind.  Hands on. Intuitive. Listening. Learning. Healing. Above all practical witha sh*t load of common sense.

You do not need a university education to be a good practical nurse. You just have to remember what your grandma taught ya and take no nonsense.

All mothers are nurses. There is  nothing hard  about  BEDSIDE. Nursing.

Today specialised nursing needs  a specialised education, for sure  but the basics are within us all. God help us even men can do it.
