How to stop a new woollen blanket from shedding so much!!!
« on: August 29, 2013, 12:26:56 am »
I bought a queens size woollen blanket which is shedding so much wool, it is unbelievable. I bought a Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner just for this, but I really need to limit the shedding. Googling has not yielded practical answers for a large blanket. Has anyone solved this problem or at least limited the shedding?

Hi Courton
"Air" it in the dryer. Put the blanket in dry (preferably with dryer balls to bash it around a bit) for a while until the shedding is reduced. Do you have a dryer with a delicate or air setting?

Yes, but the only problem is that it is massive - being queen size! Will try to see if it fits. Good idea. Thank you

Just took out of the dryer ( just fitted) and after 30 mins on airing cycle it has not budged even a little bit of fluff. Very odd. Not even a tiny bit. ??? ???

What about hanging it on the cloth line on a windy day.

I had this problem a couple of years ago. It drove me mad. I couldn't find a solution, so I hope you do.

From what I can gather online you need to wash it - and carefully

If you want to try the clothes drier again ... have you thought about doing it in the local laundrette?  Not a very nice thought, but their driers are usually pretty large, although program control may be hard it may work just this once.

Cullidh, for some reason there was not even a bit of shedding in the dryer - which was very strange since you expect at least a little bit in the lint filter! So I don't know if the launderette dryer would help.

That is one freaky blanket Courton :D
Options to consider:
Wash it on gentle cycle in cold water with wool wash (I have the largest domestic Speed Queen machine and I wash King size blankets in it) or in the bathtub if it won't go in your machine.
Hang it on the line and then whack it with a straw broom or similar and see what happens. Good exercise and good for airing frustrations too ;D
It is weird that the dryer doesn't collect any fluff ???

Djinni, I will take your advice and see what happens. I will also whack it a few times (good way to get rid of any inner frustrations!) and see if it has any impact. Yes,,a strange thing. Bought it at Bed,Bath and Table - so it is not a cheapie.
