Introduce Yourself / Re: Big decision - to buy or not to buy
« on: July 23, 2009, 08:48:23 am »
I can understand where you're coming from. My main concerns were 1) it looked fantastic but was it all too good to be true, 2) the price, and 3) would I use it enough. Your concerns are natural, especially considering that it's so easy to get sucked into purchasing a product these days that promise so much more than is delivered.

I've had my thermomix for about 3 months now and thankfully haven't regreted my purchase for a second. I don't have special diet requirements, but have always tried to cook real foods/healthy foods and the thermomix has helped with this tremendously. In my pre thermomix days I used to buy expensive condiments, breads etc. as I had to spend more to purchase foods that weren't full of cheap/unhealthful ingredients, these days I do my own, it's a bit addictive, makes you actually want to find excuses to cook. One benefit you might not be aware of (my consultant mentioned it to me, but to honest I didn't believe her until I starting using one myself) was that you can actually save quite a bit of money cooking with the TM. You tend to use more basic ingredients like flour, butter, legumes, meat and veges in cooking, slowly but surely my grocery bill has reduced as the way I shop has changed.

I'm really not sure why they're not sold in shops. It might be because you need to see it in action to believe it (I know I certainly wouldn't have otherwise).

I have no problems getting my partner to use the machine, as it makes cooking easier and you can set something to cook for say 30 minutes and walk away and forget about it. Also, its a bit of a futuristic looking gaget with plenty of features, my partner can't help himself  :) :)  I hope this helps. I guess most of the replies you get on this site will be a bit biased as we all love the machine. Best of luck.

Great to hear. Good luck ILB  :) :)

You're right, if you listen you can really hear what your body needs and you find out pretty quickly when you've gotten it wrong! Even though I feel terrible afterwards it still doesn't stop me from eating all the wrong things much of the time.

Haven't had any cravings yet (the lamintons I'd forgotten I'd ordered that landed on my desk Monday morning were pretty tempting though!) must be a good sign  :)

I feel tired just thinking about that! Hope you got what you needed done Jane. It's an effort dieting at the best of times without late nights, holidays etc. I guess there's never a good time though.

Just to let you know the lentil hotpot was actually very nice (I made with green lentils instead of brown). It's another cheapy and once you've done the first lot of chopping/cooking (about 5 mins worth) you can just set the thermomix and let it go  :)

5 kgs in one week  :o  that's fantastic!! Is she finding it relatively easy? My mum is always on some stupid diet or another and is hungry all the time, she's just brought a thermomix so I should probably give her this one.

I agree, eating more often should help speed up your metabolism, at one stage I was doing these really intense gym sessions almost every day, ate like a horse (up to 8 times a day) and I still lost weight. If you can eat more often during the day and reduce the size of your evening meal a little that might help too. I don't feel like I'm losing weight either, so hope at the end of the week you are very pleasantly surprised Jane.

I haven't been following the menus to the absolute letter anyway, but have just noticed there's no lunch suggestions any more. I've made sandwiches most days; chicken and salad or cheese and salad, also have had left over dinner with salad, some TM baked beans I'd made previously and frozen (checked the ingredients and thought they should fit in to the diet ok) and yesterday had eggplant fritters (made with eggplant, homemade breadcrumbs, egg and some herbs) with veges cooked on the grill.

For anyone who hasn't tried it yet the Frittata on day 8 is literally to die for, it was sooooooo good. I had to use the hand held blender to chop the corriander as finely as I wanted and next time would make the egg mixture first, so that it cooks on the stove while making the vegetable mixture. Tonight I'm making the lentil hotpot (doesn't sound nearly as appealing) and have had to substitute kale with wombok cabbage . . . . fingers crossed it's edible.

It's going well, I've had to make a couple of detours (4 to be exact!), but they've been reasonably minor and still have plenty of energy and feeling positive. Weighed myself this morning after the first week and have lost 1.4kgs, so a pretty reasonable start all in all :) :)

I've been having fruit for morning tea and the vege sticks and dip for arvo tea, most of the time I just eat them at my desk it doesn't cut in to work much.

7 cups of tea :o Jane I'd be living in the loo if I drank that much. Fantastic that you haven't had coffee withdrawals, or been hungry yet though :) ;D. I must admit I do get hungry at times, but it passes after a while, so is fairly painless. I'm no Cyndi but I think if you're feeling good and not hungry there's no harm in not eating 5 times a day.

Just started exercising this morning, which is a first in a long time so hopefully that helps to keep the weight loss going past the first week.

It's great to have a buddy to talk to Jane, as I said to ILB, just writing about it on this forum has kept me more accountable than I have in a long time :) :) Be sure to report in soon if you can :-* :-*

Good on you Jane  :) :)  You sound like me, when you make up your mind, you make up your mind  ;) When you go away, don't be super strict on yourself, you'll probably be faced with situations you wouldn't be normally, so just do what you can to enjoy your trip as well as the diet.

I always think I need to do things that are more drastic too, but it's really important to be healthy and keep your metabolism up at the same time. There's nothing worse than feeling tired and cranky because you've eaten like a sparrow and then at the end of the week you barely lose 0.5 kg!!  ??? ??? I only have 5 or 6 kg to lose and think I've lost and gained that same 5 or 6 kg well over a 100 times in my life  :'(  so am really determined to be sensible, reasonable and not too hard on myself this time, it has to be sustainable.

Let me know how you're going with it when you get started. I felt well below average the first two days, but have felt really good since then :) :)  being able to cook great meals in the TM really helps too.

I bet it's much easier this time ILB  :)  and it should be ok you can just feed Miss 3 ice-cream over those few weeks  ;) ;D

Three demos in four days - wow  :o  I only have one demo to go to and that will be hard enough, taste testing is absolutely mandatory  ;) :).  I think just writing on the forum about it has helped to keep me accountable so far, so it'll be great to have a buddy  :) :)

Chit Chat / Re: Cookbooks available - what do you recommend?
« on: July 15, 2009, 08:03:27 am »
I love the vegetarian cookbook. It's very healthy and the recipes I've tried so far have been spot on. Some recipes are good for vegans, gluten free and dairy free diets. There are also a lot more recipes that can be used to make a main meal out of, although from memory not as many Varoma recipes as the Everyday Cookbook. I also have Healthy Eating with Cyndi O'Meara which I've just started using over the last few days. These recipes are great so far and most of them are main meals.

In my opinion it would be good to have another cookbook to allow you to experiment with different recipes that suit your tastes when your TM arrives. Having said that, this forum has heaps of fantastic recipes you could try before buying another book and there's a section where you can request recipes if you need a particular one. I've been considering purchasing another cookbook, so will be very interested in reading feedback.

Good luck and enjoy your thermomix :) :)

Vivacity if you're looking to download the diet, it is quite sensible and healthy with some great (mostly main meal) recipes, but these aren't converted for cooking in the thermomix. There's a book you can buy from Thermomix, I think it's called Healthy Eating with Cyndi O'Meara, that has most of the diet recipes converted.

I haven't been a member of a forum before and have just realised I've started a chat thread in the recipe section  ??? - should I go to another area? Sorry  :-[

If you need any support or to troubleshoot JaneeZee and ILB when you get started let me know. The first couple of days were difficult but it's a little easier today and I'm feeling more energetic. The two thermomix meals (last nights was orange marinaded chicken) I've made have been just beautiful. At the least this diet should help me to use and learn about the varoma a little more :) :)

I did this diet last winter for the 21 days + another week or two (before I had my thermomix). I felt great; energetic, lost a couple of kgs and my skin cleared up too  :) :). Although as both ILB and Nay-nay said it was difficult with the cold weather to give up my porridge, so after the first few days decided not to, alternating it with the breakfast smoothie (it's surprisingly filling). I've decided to do that this time too as I figure Cyndi lives in QLD where it's a lot warmer this time of year and sometimes you need a little extra when it's 0 deg (or below :o) in the mornings!

That sounds fantastic  :-*  :-* JaneeZee and ILB if you'd like to buddy up, we can support each other and trouble shoot as we go. Do you want to take a couple of days to organise groceries etc. and then I can start back at day 1 with you both? This is only my second day, but just starting the diet and getting through day one is an achievement for me!!

Last nights day 2 meal (fish with mash potato) cooked in the thermomix was beautiful, great flavours and thankfully filling. I cooked some veges in the Varoma while the rest of the meal was cooking instead of having salad (too cold for salad for me). I decided not to let myself get too hungry for the remainder of the diet and will try to snack on fruit or a few nuts and have cooked foods instead of salads etc. if needed. I'd rather stick to it 80 - 90 % for the full 21 days, than be perfect and not make the first three  :'(  :)

Thanks Tenina - that's a big help  :) :)

I'm taking dessert to a friends place on Wednesday, so will try the Torte Caprese again, this time at 160 deg - thanks guys  :) :)

Chit Chat / Cyndi's 21 day weight loss diet
« on: July 13, 2009, 07:52:18 am »
Hi guys,

I'm wondering, has anyone tried Cyndi's 21 day weight loss program using their thermomix? I brought the book of her recipes converted to be made in the thermomix and have just realised about half of them are ones used in this diet - this should make the diet a little easier to follow (I hope).

I've started it today and will be making a TM main meal listed on day two of the diet tonight. Now all I have to do is stick to the menus :-\  :-\

This is a beautiful recipe  :)  I tried it about a week ago - lovely and moist as you said - even my (meat-devoted) partner enjoyed it! Next time will put a little less Apple Cider Vinegar in the sauce to sweeten it up a bit more. I'll definetly make this again. Thanks GJS  :) :)
