Title: Summer Porridge in a Jar
Post by: Bootobethin on January 02, 2015, 10:06:04 pm
I have just made a version of Summer porridge in a jar.
I am having my knee replaced next month and am testing some make ahead recipes.
The porridge is very nice.
This is what I did:
Place one apple, quartered
One cup rolled oats
Four pitted prunes and
Two teaspoons chia seeds.
Speed 5 for 4 seconds
Place into four smallish jars and just cover with what ever milk you like put lids on.
These keep for several days in the fridge and are really nice.
I guess you could add whatever you wanted.

This sounds so easy. I have read that you can add yoghurt instead of milk or with. Also berries.

I think you can add all srts of things to your taste.
The milk determines the texture. I would probably mix milk and yogurt rather than just yogurt.
A spoonful of home made jam or stewed fruit on top is really yummy also!
I am hoping to have some prepared for after surgery. They are easy and healthy for my son to make.
They also look nice and would be good if guests were staying as they are just in the fridge waiting in the morning.

I've just made a batch - had just enough oats and prunes left to do the full quantity.

Just had my summer porridge for breakfast, I didn't read the recipe properly and didn't have prunes so I put in dates, very nice and convenient I added extra stewed nectarines and mango this morning.  Thanks BB

I didn't add anything else to mine this morning so it probably needed a bit of sweetener but I did eat it without any and the taste grew on me.  I do like fast breakfasts and this one couldn't be any quicker. As AB did, adding some stewed fruit would be the way to go.

Glad people are enjoying this recipe.
I don't think it matters if you add dates instead of prunes or put in any other handy fruit.
My combination was just what I enjoy eating.

Thanks for a great recipe :) I made this one with a handful of almonds and dates instead of prunes. I made three servings. It's yummy and will certainly be a regular.

I love just being able to grab one out of the fridge, make a cup of coffee and that's it - such an easy breakfast in summer. Having mine with some peaches this morning which has given me that extra sweetness it needed.

I will hang my head as I say this. I made some up yesterday, they were eaten for afternoon or supper snacks.  :P. I didn't mind as they are so easy to do. I will do them later tonight for breakfast tomorrow.

I'm making this again tonight and going to put in two extra dates and some almonds that sound nice, I divided mine into four but may make five or six feeds this time as with added fruit it was too much for me in the morning.

How funny  I just put to soak (with no thermie, just a spoon)

1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup milk
60 g blue berries
1 T chia seeds (12g)
15 grams slivered almonds.

Will put a dollop of yogurt on the top in the morning and maybe extra fruit.

Need to make smaller quantity, and try with some almond milk too!

DJ glad you liked it.
I get four or six serves out of the full recipe.
You could just halve the recipe and use dried fruit instead of apple.
Hope this works.

Sounds good DJ.
Use your recipes but put it into two or three jars for several good sized serves.
Enjoy summer or winter in your case!

These are a variation on a theme!
I have found this link as part of Healthy eating week which is next month.
Some of these ideas are amazing and open up a whole lot of possibilities.
I am going to try some of them as prepare ahead healthy meals.
I will let you know how I go.

This mornings breakfast in a jar from http://www.theyummylife.com/recipes/222/Banana%20Cocoa%20Refrigerator%20Oatmeal
Banana cocoa refrigerator oatmeal

1/4 cup uncooked rolled oats
1/3 cup skim milk
1/4 cup low-fat Greek yoghurt
1.5 tsp chia seeds
1 tbsn cocoa powder
1 tsp honey (or any preferred sweetener)
1/4 cup diced ripe banana - I used a very small one for this amount

Add oats, milk, yoghurt, chia seeds, cocoa powder and honey to a jar.  Give it a good shake to combine then add the bananas and stir to mix through.  Refrigerate overnight or up to 2 days.  Eat chilled.  245 calories if you eat the lot, I only eat 1/3 of this amount.

Yum JD sounds great.
These meals salads in a jar are working well as I recover from a knee replacement.
I mix these up with thermi and put into the fridge ready for me to hobble past and grab.
They are easy to carry as I am using a walking stick.
The kids grab them for a snack.
It is a good way to eat healthily with good portion size while recovering.
They look appealing which is great as I haven't had much of an appetite.
