I only knew the name because of an English friend of mine.  My Mum would never have called them by their proper name ;D

I had to google to find out what they were. I remember our English friend had them, but didn't know what they were called.
I child-proofed my house, but they still get in!

Antimacassars were used to prevent men's hair oil from soiling furniture fabrics.

They were still common when I was a child when men used Brylcreem and similar hair "oils" - the "original" was macassar oil.
The reason sailors have wide collars on the backs of their uniform blouses was so the woolen fabric of the uniform itself would not be soiled - mainly because sailors wore their hair long and dressed in a pig-tail with oil.

The Army uniforms were not affected because they required the hair to be cut short in the back by the time hair oil became popular in the Victorian era.

Thanks Andie.  Even though men rarely use hair oil these days (well the men I know that is), these are still good to have on the backs of high-backed lounge furniture where men in particular sit.  It's amazing how dirty they get.

All except the UK Royal Welsh Fusiliers. They were serving abroad when the order was given to cut off pigtails. They still to this day wear the black ribbons at the back of the neck as a result of their misdemeanor.

Today we ordered a new Sharp Convection microwave at Harvey Norman. We had to order it as they didn't have any Sharp Convection microwaves in stock and I didn't want another brand. We also bought two Fitbits and a new HP wireless color laser printer.

OMG Decadent Dot, your post has just sent shivers up my spine. My dad, (who passed away in April this year, after loosing his wife of 65yrs on boxing day last year) served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and it was whilst serving with them, that he received the MM at the age of 21 yrs of age.

pumpkin pie, I remember the Royal Welsh Fusiliers as we served with them in Germany. My husband who was not welsh had to eat a raw leek after a large dinner whilst a drum rolled and the mascot goat was marched round the table at a regimental dinner to hopefully turn him into a Welshman. I was excused any rituals because my dad was Welsh and I could sing. Ha! such a rich life of wonderful memories. I expect your dad loved that he wore the black flashes (or ribbons) to denote that they did not cut off their pigtails quick enough. Wonderful that he had the MM at such a yong age.
