What's your "Five"?
« on: May 29, 2012, 01:29:56 pm »
Those of us in Oz must all be aware of a certain supermarket chain's promotion of their loyalty program whereby customers can nominate 5 items which they will then get discounted every week (at least I think that's how it goes).
I haven't joined this program, but it's got me thinking: what would my 5 be now, & what was it before I had thermie?

Before:
Pikelets
Muesli bars
Sweet biscuits
Frozen Crumbed chicken or fish
Rice crackers

Now:
Eggs
Butter
Sugar or flour (always running out of one or other)
Rice crackers
Baby spinach (have developed addiction)

I get milk & bread delivered, so that doesn't count, & I rarely buy the same type of meat 2 weeks in a row. I buy a lot of essentials e.g. toilet paper in bulk so don't buy weekly.
I still need rice crackers for lunch boxes, other than that my shopping habits have changed quite a bit - don't think I'd save much on my current "5".

So - which 5 weekly items would you choose?

This is a bit harder than I thought.  Definitely:

Dates
Almonds
Apples ...

but then, what vegetables, fruit and other items would I buy more often than any others ... all of them!  I guess the final two items would have to be:

Milk
Bread
Marina from Melbourne and Guildford

I didn't realize that's how it works. I shop at Woolworth's so have never looked into it, but if I was to choose.......

Shampoo and conditioner (lots of hair here)
Toilet paper (cause with 7 bums we use a lot :) )
Deodorant (I'm sure the boys shower in it)
And yogurt

I would say washing powder but I buy in bulk.

I had to really think about that one.

It was harder than I thought to select my five as I don't buy much from Coles (or Woolies for that matter). Since the offer only lasts til Oct, the five had to be things frequently purchased or things that could be stored/stockpiled, and also the more expensive of these as the discount is a percentage of the price. So I ended up with:
Jalna Yoghurt
Parmesan
Tuna
Red salmon
Toilet paper

Uni you can nominate your own five items, just log onto the Fly Buys website.

My OH nominated our 5, but we went for mainly non-food items that cost more - Laundry stuff, toilet paper, smackos, coke etc

I don't shop at Coles, usually only for the specials. From memory my 5 are Goulburn Valley fruits, Moccona coffee, and.................would you believe I can't remember the rest.

Yes Uni is right.  You do nominate your own my5 but there isn't the full range to choose from. I wanted to choose the most expensive things from my monthly list (grapeseed oil, breadflour etc) but they weren't listed.  I chose nappies, bananas, milk, mince and .... I can't remember what else.  :)

think mine was:

toilet paper (12 pack)
tomatoes
cat food
bananas?
nuts?

gosh, just can't remember but have to spend $50 to get the benefit. As it was only available until October I didn't commit it to my long term memory.  I shop daily so I never quite make it to the discount.

Cecilia, you need to get a herb garden going!!

I don't shop at Coles since they did the cheap milk thing. I shop at Woolies when there's no other option.

My five, pre TM would have been treats like Muesli Bars, packets of chips, sweet biscuits etc.

Now, it would be (other than Dog Bones & Cat Mince), Cream, Butter, Lemons, Tomatoes and Bananas

A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.
