Made this today Chookie.  For the fruit I used what I had in; sultanas, currants and a punnet of blueberries that had started to dry out in the fridge  ;D

I served buttered with TM honey butter.  :D

Hiya, just a question for those that have made this, is this malt loaf similar to the malt loaf made by Soreen and sold in Woolies, it's in yellow packaging, a small loaf, very dark and dense and sticky and originates from the UK. (hoping you've tried this too lol). My 5 yo absolultely loovveessss the Soreen one, so would like to try and make for him.

I don't think it is like a Soreen loaf Debbie as it doesn't contain yeast.

Deb,  tell me about this Soreen loaf.  I sometimes make a Malt Loaf for my DH that has yeast in it.  We may be able to work something out.

Thanks DJ.  Think I could have a go at this.  Only problem would be the malt flour.  Also that I haven't tasted it.  Going  to Ballarat to look after sick GC today so will have a go when we come home.  Could be next week.

It was SENSATIONALLY good.

I think if brushed with malt before cooking would be moving towards a soreen loaf.

I used giant raisins, ordinary raisins and dried cranberries. The rooibois tea was all gone this morning into the fruit. I warmed the malt and sugar in a pan, added the fruit and flour. Stirred well and put in two traditional loaf tins.

I had 3 pieces for my lunch!

I have looked everywhere for liquid malt and can't find any. I'll look in health food shops this week. I would like to make this for visitors tomorrow. Could I use molasses or treacle or would they make it too sweet?

Cookie  i buy malt extract from Coles - in the dessert section near the toppings.  I haven't made this loaf yet but Malt extract is not sweet so i dont think treacle would be a great substitute.

It's available from Coles online so i would think most stores stock it
