Saline flushes for your sinuses!
« on: August 22, 2009, 12:46:15 am »
Hello
this is a bit of an odd post LOL but from elsewhere I was inspired to use TMX to heat up my saline flushes for my sinuses!   ;D  I was finding it really irritating to boil the jug and then have to wait for it to cool.  So now, I can heat it to 37deg in TMX and it is ready to go straight away.
Another great use for TMX - and I hope it helps someone LOL.
Narelle
ETA I use the Fess Sinu-Cleanse sachets.  There are others out there I believe.

Narelle, can I have more info on how to do a sinus flush please. DH is driving me crazy with sinus trouble (I think that's what it is).  I have taken him to have his ears syringed at the doctors, bought a course of sinus tablets but nothing works. He continually feels as if he is in a plane and has to sniff to clear his ears.  I don't mind it when we are home alone but it's embarassing when we are out.  Was thinking next step would be an ENT specialist or maybe putting him out of his misery myself  ;) ;) ;) ;)

judy, i'm using a system called "Flo" - i bought the "Flo Sinus Care Starter Pack" at the chemist and did a search on youtube for "sinus flush" to see how to do it. it feels horrible and has yet to help me but has great reports so i'm hopeful lol

Judy - I use the Fess Sinu-Cleanse brand but it is probably the same.  The biggest thing I would say is not to use any sinus tablets as they really make it worse in the long run.  Rhinocort or any brand of steroid inhaler things are the best really.

A saline flush is really one of the nastiest things to do - it feels sooooooooo horrible but it is very beneficial.

ETA - to actually do it prepare solution as directed.  Lean over a sink with mouth open, starting with right nostril gently insert tip of bottle.  Squeezing very gently until solution goes up.  Don't let go of bottle or you will have backflush.  Eww.  I need to breathe really slowly and just go steady as the sensations are very uncomfortable.  Not everyone will be able to get it coming out the other nostril.  You need to keep going until you can't get any more fluid in, and then a bit more.  If it's going to come out the other side, you can feel it moving through.

I imagine it would be horrible to do but DH is good like that, he will try anything.  Me, well that's a different story.

Great post :) DH love to 'wash' his sinuses and the water is often to hot for me... I will test this recipe out. We just add our own salt to avoid all the other bits in the fess pre made sachets, it really does feel great once you get the hang of it. :)

Nerida how much salt do you use in a 200ml lot? I got one of the sinusflo systems and it was a godsend when my hayfever was driving me up the wall.

Although some of this post is a few months old I feel I can contribute.     MY E.N.T specialist recommended Neilmed  sinus rinse.
It is unpleasant to use and much the same as the Fess, I would think.   However it is really good , and from using it twice a day to after a few months only once or twice a month.

My doctor told me to make up my own spray, just water and salt and put in in the my nasal sprays.  Since my doctor told me 20+ years ago to make salt water up in a glass and suck it up into my nose I'm quite happy to do this.  The doctor recommends 6 sprays up each nostril and to use it frequently though.  Acupuncture is fabulous too!

Since I wrote the above comment,  I am free of the need to use it.  I have identified the cause which is preservative 220.   Unfortunately in most wines and sausages.  These I avoid. :'( :'( :'(
