My DH is fuming. We have just discovered on our Nissan Patrol that the dash board is blistering. We looked on some Nissan forums and found that this is a common problem and many people have had to have them fixed. He decided to take it to the dealer where we bought it and they said that as it is no longer under warranty they won't do anything.
He rang consumer affairs and their response was that the dashboard is not fit for the purpose it was built for so they should do something at least. The blistering is much worse under the dash mat.
Apparently this is called an implied warranty as the dash was not vinyl coated correctly. That is; it isn't suitable for what it was meant to do.
It is going to be interesting to see what happens. This is our 5th Nissan and of course we aren't impressed.
Has anyone had experience with implied warranties at all please?

Gee that would make me mad.
My friend brought a new car and had to have it re sprayed (bonnet and roof) because of the paint fading after only 3 years but that was still just in warranty.
You would think that with a dash mat your dash should be protected from blistering. They should fix it I would think especially if it's a common problem with the same model.

Thanks dede. The dash mat was put on within a week of purchase. They are referring it to Nissan so we may hear next week. Consumer affairs said they should fix it.

Certainly doesnt sound good enough Cookie, always a fight though. Hopefully nissan will do the right thing.

I worked in the automotive industry for a while, and I suggest you contact Nissan directly through a customer care line or something similar. Explain the situation and let them know that you're a longtime customer and they'll more than likely look after you. We had a similar situation with a ford XR 8 and a very expensive CPU and we were taken care of. Dealers are generally independently owned and don't have a big "good will" budget and if it's not covered by warranty it will have to come out of their own pockets, but the actual manufacturer will have a lot more flexibility. Phone the head office. Don't take a no answer from a local dealer.
We have a Nissan XTrail. Love it.
But soon after we got it the gas strut thingy that should hold up the back door failed.
We took it back to the dealer we bought it from and they refused to fix it. Said we must have done something to it???
We went to the main distributor in Adelaide and they replaced it as soon as they got one in stock.
We reported the dealer (in Christies Beach) but nothing happened that we know of.

I think it is always best to deal directly. If it is something small I always mail it back and ask them to fix it. Usually works but I guess you cannot mail a car. I am sure Nissan will fix it for you.
Once I was so annoyed about the underwire coming out of a bra I sent it back to be stitched back in and guess what........they actually did it. Same bra came back.

Good luck with that Cookie, not good enough at all and very surprising with the dash mat there anyway. Is the Nissan parked out in the open and not under cover - you've had some very hot summers of late. Not that it should make a difference but it may be a contributing factor.

:) Contact Nissan directly, if that does not work contact ACA and let the media do a story.
Bad publicity will cost many more dollars than fixing your car.
When I have problems with big companies, i play fair.
I am MD, so I want to talk your the MD of that company, or I will go to ACA. works well.

Thank you all for your advice. DH was amazed that this forum could offer advice. We have contacted Nissan direct and DD found a forum that told us more about it.

Fantastic news about our Nissan Patrol. We took your advice and did a
bit lot of hassling, especially of Nissan Australia.
The wonderful news is that the entire dashboard was replaced on our Nissan on Wednesday with no cost to us.So thank you all and thank you Nissan Australia. I take back all my bad thoughts about you. ;)
If you know anyone with a Nissan Patrol get them to check the dash, especially under any dash mats as the lad at our dealer said they had replaced upwards of 1000 at that dealership alone.
