Glutinous rice

There's a recipe in ITM2 (Hedgehog Riceballs) which uses glutinous rice which appears to be white long grained rice.  I bought a packet of sticky long grain rice and I'm hoping this is the same or am I wrong on this one.

Glutinous rice (Oryza sativa var. glutinosa; also called sticky rice, sweet rice or waxy rice) is a type of rice grown mainly in Southeast and East Asia.

By the way Judy you can use this in both savoury and sweet dishes. It is not actually sweet. It is just lacking in a type of starch and is good for sticking things together like a stuffing or hedgehogs.

Is it sort of like arborio rice, Gert?  Or a completely different grain.

Nothing like arborio but you possibly could use sticky rice for arancini  balls.

Arborio rice is full of starch and when cooked it is released making risotto creamy.  

Sushi rice is short grained with starch  to make it sticky but is different from glutenous rice being short!!!

Thanks Gert, happy I bought the right one.  Rice varieties do confuse me at times but you sound very knowledgeable in this matter.

I too used to get confused so I did a bit or research especially when I was making a lot of sushi the. I lent my DH my sushi maker and never saw it again!

You can buy it easily in Asian groceries

I thought that would be the case BZB but I just picked up some sticky rice from Foodland.
