DD what did you think of "The Spiders Web"? We are looking at it for book club but not sure if we will go ahead with it.  Also what did you think of Usain Bolts Book?

I'm planning on catching public transport on Saturday and was hoping to hang around with everyone between the cooking class and dinner, but may have to go home in between depending on DS basketball game time.

Chicken tikka with added spinach and cauliflower rice tonight. I also have some zucchini that needs using up so might give those zucchini toters a try

CC I hope you ended up feeling much better and it was just an early morning bug.

Gert, great that you are having an extended FF with Chookie and Ral.

The weather in Melbourne is unpredictable as usual and the longer range forecast have been extremely inaccurate over the last few weeks. I've been tracking the weather as I'm running a 1/2 marathon at the Melbourne running festival on Sunday and we've been tracking the weather for a few weeks now, we have had everything from mid teens, up to mid 30's and now it's only going to be 20! For those coming to FF, I would say be prepared for 4 season in 1 day.

I've made a booking at Red Spice Road QV (37 Artemis Lane) for 15 at 6.00pm (out at 7.45pm) for the Friday night. They do open at 5 so if we want to go a little earlier I can check that will be OK, and I'll also look into any bars that are close by for post dinner drinks, or we can just go back to the hotel which is only a 5 - 10 min walk.

I wasn't sure who was interested so booked for 15 as a starting point, and I can add to it if there's a few extras. The list below has 20 but I think there are a few on their that won't be coming along. If people could confirm if they are interested that would be great.
Cookie (yes)
Judy
Gert (yes)
Chookie and Ral (yes)
Denise and Evan (yes)
Cream Puff and DH?? (yes)
Kezza & Colette (yes)

I'm not into queuing or loud music so will look for a few options for bars. I've tried a few with DH and they do seem to get busy so hard with a bigger group but we might be able to book a table at one. I'll do some investigating over the course of this week.

for those who might be taking a walk along the river "The Arbory" is a great new café/bar which runs along between the train line and the river on the city side of the river just near flinders St. DH and I have spent a few nice hours with a cold drink overlooking the goings on of the river. It does get very busy though.

Dinner at the hotel on Saturday sounds great - good decision Cookie.

I'll make a tentative booking at the Red Spice Road in QV for Friday night at the 6pm session, and those who are interested can let me know and I can update (or cancel) the booking as the time progresses.

Marina, I went to the Essendon DFO a little while ago and was very disappointed, I think they seem to be focusing on the Harbour Town and University Hill (Bundoora) venues these days.  I'm not a big fan of the outlet stores in general these days although I've been known to get some bargains it's very hit and miss. There seem to be so many sales in the shops now that I find I prefer just shopping in the city.

If the weather is good I would also recommend a rooftop bar for a drink - there's  lot of good ones around the city now.

I spoke with Red Spice Road and below are the options which unfortunately seem a little limited to me and might depend on the numbers we end up with.

For either of their restaurants they can accommodate us  for the 6.00pm session which requires you to be finished at 7.45pm or the 8.00pm session which has no end time.

While the 6.00pm session seemed a little rushed for me,  upon further thinking maybe it would be good to have dinner and then go back to the more open (and probably cheaper) bar at the hotel for post dinner drinks, gift exchange and talking.

For all bookings in excess of 12 there is a requirement to order one of the banquet menus which are different prices at the different restaurants, and I would suggest the middle menu ($69 or $79 per person) which does include a number of dishes for each of the three courses but no drinks. I have this banquet a number of times and they have been able to cater to a number of food concerns including my no seafood without any issues.

Our other option is to have a private room at the McKillop St restaurant which  isn't limited by numbers but does have a minimum spend including food and drinks of $2000 so really only an option if we have in excess of 20 people attending.

let me know what you all think.

I'll give red spice road a call tomorrow and see if they are able to accomodate us all on the Friday or Saturday then we can choose a second option for the other night.

Cookie, weve been focussing more on out of city restaurants at the moment but a few of our favourites are Longrain, Cumulis Inc, Chin Chin, Red Spice Road, Hellinic Republic and Blue Bonnet BBQ.  Of these I think Red Spice Road is the best for a big group and best value for money (not cheap though, more reasonable), there are lots of sharing type plates and large communal tables, there are also two locations within the city centre easy walking distance to the hotel although we would need to book fairly quickly. They are  "famous" for their sticky pork belly dish which I'm sure I would overdose on if I lived closer.

I'm also happy to organise a dinner there if people are interested. It really depends what cuisine people are interested in.
