Title: Amy's Winter Banana Smoothie
Post by: judydawn on April 24, 2012, 01:13:29 pm

Amy posted this recipe in Drinks but I thought we should have a copy of it here in Breakfasts as well.

Winter Banana "Smoothie"
Posted 24/4/12

Serves one

Ingredients:
20-30g oats
1 large banana, roughly chopped or broken
100g low-fat vanilla yoghurt
250ml skim milk
Extra flavourings as desired: vanilla essence, nutmeg, cinnamon, LSA... you could even try some cocoa powder to make it chocolatey...

Method:
1. Grind oats for 6 seconds/speed 8, or until desired consistency is achieved.
2. Add banana and yoghurt. Blend for 10 seconds/speed 4.
3. Add milk and cook for 7 minutes/70 degrees/speed 4.

Notes:
I love this "smoothie" on cold days. I never make it exactly the same but this is basically what I do. Sometimes I add more oats, cook it for longer, grind the oats more finely, or add more milk. Depends how I feel on the day

I tried this with an apple this morning Amy and it's just as nice.  For children I would probably peel it but I didn't mind the little crunchy bits of skin - I know the skin is good for you but kids wouldn't understand that  ;) What I like about this smoothie is that it keeps you going until lunchtime and as my GK's always seem to want to eat all day when they get dropped off, I am going to give this recipe to DD to see if they like it and then hopefully they will forget about food for a few hours.

Thanks for the great feedback JD :D I might try with an apple next time I make it. Did you use a green or red apple? Yes, I think there's some fancy statistic saying that a majority of the nutrients and antioxidants in apples are found just underneath the skin, so are lost when peeled.

Good like getting kids to stop thinking about food! :-)) Hopefully this smoothie will fill their little tummies though :D

Thanks JD. I will have to get some next time I am at Woolworths. We only have Pink Ladies in the fruit bowl. Its a shame because it is very cold here today and I think I would have liked one of my smoothies :-\

Any apple will do Amy although Granny Smiths may be a bit tart unless you add some sugar as well.

Ooh, I love the look of this one & especially like the chocolate option too. I'm in hot & humid Hong Kong right now, but will be making this for brekky just as soon as I get home to the winter chill.

Fab food Judy! It's bloody humid here, though & I hate that. My hair has gone completely mad and is sticking straight up in corkscrew curls - I've given up on it.
We leave tomorrow night for Italy - more great food.
I shall be the size of the Goodyear blimp at the end of this!

Hi everyone,

I posted this photo on the other thread for this recipe in Breakfasts, and thought I would post here as well.

I made this one tonight and put a small handful of blueberries in the bottom of my glass first.

That sounds nice. I have made it twice now. The first one was a little too bananary ( is that a word?) for me as my bananas were very strong. This morning I only put in half a banana and some Crio Bru and adjusted the proportions slightly. I debated whether I should blitz the Crio with the oats- I didn't and I should have. It was a bit gritty.
It caught a little on the bottom of my Thermo Chef, but not as bad as the other porridges I have tried. With a little more tweaking I think I'm on a winner.
Thanks Amy!

No worries ES, glad to hear you're experimenting!!! :D

I like a good strong banana flavour, so I often use very ripe bananas :D Just my personal preference ;) I am yet to try Judy's version with the apple, but I will soon.

I did make it this morning with apple instead of banana. I also blitzed the Crio Bru with the oats.. I liked this a lot, but it's hard to get my head around chocolate porridge. It just doesn't sound right somehow.

Lol don't worry about the chocolate porridge thing. I haven't actually tried it yet either. I like good old fruit with my porridge ;)

I decided to make this for an afternoon snack. I could only fit in half of it so the rest is saved for tomorrow. I found it a tiny bit sweet so may try it with natural yoghurt next time. I added heaps of cinnamon to it. Thanks Amy this is certainly a winner.

Amy, I had to just about twist my husband's arm to try the hot smoothie. No way, did he think he would like them! Very reluctant to try.

After the first day it was 'i suppose i can stand it for breakfast again'. Since then, every day he has been suggesting them for breakfast  :D He is now really enjoying them - last four have had raw coca powder added to them.

Very nice having a hot chocolate smoothie for breakfast   ;D  ;D

So do i recommend it,

Amy, I have been using frozen bananas most mornings. Just give it up to 30 secs extra on about 9, before cooking. I have been adding one tabs per person of the raw cocoa, and it is lovely and rich  ;D

How have I managed to miss this thread before?  :o

Amy, I think you have answered all my prayers as I am usually stuck as to what to have for breakfast (not a cereal fan to be honest - cardboardy & bland IMHO) I also prefer hot food/drinks given a choice (I blame UK climate :P) - so me thinks this is going to a perfect solution.

I will have great fun shopping for this recipe tomorrow - then I can play  :P and report back  ;D Yay!

 :-*

Awesome Shally, I can't wait to hear what you think! :D :D :D

I agree with you on your opinion of cereal. There are only about three cereals I will eat due to the cardboard factor :-))

I'm so glad you found this thread! Hopefully it will solve your breakfast dilemma :-*

Had a bruised pear that needed using up, so peeled it and added it to this recipe (along with the banana) with a teaspoon of cacao powder, and it was absolutely delicious.  Choc banana and pear smoothie - yumyumyumyum

I only just found this recipe this morning while looking for the porridge for one thread.  I only had plain yoghurt so I added a squirt of vanilla essence, I also added some cacao powder an egg and a double espresso shot (didn;t think I would want a coffee as well as a smoothie and had to get my morning caffeine fix  ;) ). It was really good but the egg thickened it too much so I add a splash of milk and gave it another minute on 70.

I can see myself doing this again.

I made this today using 60g of home made Greek style yoghurt instead of vanilla, plus added ¼ tsp ground cinnamon.  Really enjoyed the flavour of this and it wasn't too tart either.  It's very similar to the normal banana smoothie I make (but that doesn't have yoghurt added), but this was nice on a cold morning.  Will make again.  :)

Edited to add:  I could only drink ½ of this before I felt very full.  I've covered the remaining and will have tomorrow.  It's amazing how when the oats are cooked and it thickens the mixture it makes it more filling than just having a normal smoothie.  :D
