Post by: GymPrincess on April 20, 2012, 10:57:24 am
Hi fellow thermies!
How do you open a coconut?
I have a bad injury to my wrist which makes smashing hard.
Cheers Nicole

Poke the 3 holes out, drain the liquid and try throwing it on concrete or smashing it with a hammer Nicole.  Good luck, let us know how you go.

On The Isle of Pines, the local women used small axes.

Thank you so far... I think that's the answer, someone said pop in a plastic bag so the bits stay in one place. Cant really smash with hammer due to the wrist injury so concrete it is as I am desparate to try the CADA recipe!!!  Other suggestions welcome :-)

Throw it up in the air Nicole so that it has further to fall onto the concrete.

This suggests that you crack it in the oven (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/cracking-a-coconut-recipe/index.html) ;)

I put my little grey cells to work as I remembered Janie Turner (UK Thermomix) mentioning this method years ago.Googling helped to confirm it ;) ;)

My husband has an obsession with finding and cracking coconuts when on tropical holidays locations - and with it comes a huge mess! :-))

Sadly I can't suggest the oven option to him as most hotel rooms don't have ovens :P

When we lived in the Torres Straits we had a staffy who would dehusk a coconut in under 10 minutes for me, then all I did was drill or poke out the 'eyes' (of the coconut) drain the liquid and drop it on the cement verandah. I had a never ending supply of coconuts (over 150 trees between the shack and the beach) and the dog would get mighty cranky at the coconuts when they hit him in the head while he was dehusking them, so he kept me supplied with ones ready to go!

I've done the screwdriver through the coconut eyes thing before, drained the juice and I then put the coconut into a vice that my husband has on his workbench in the garage. Works a treat to crack the coconut.  When we were in Fiji, the men there used these massive machetes to crack the coconuts- I'm not game to imitate that as I'm likely to amputate one of my limbs!

I give to the GC,  and they throw it down on the concrete.

Make sure that the coconut is cold then the flesh will release easier. Hit it with the backside of a knife until it cracks.

Found a video that explains it.
