Maximum amount mash potatoes?
« on: October 11, 2011, 09:24:49 am »
I have started making mash potatoes the way described in another thread (steamed in basket and then decanted and mashed). But right now I have 7 of us in the house (in-laws staying for 7 weeks) and that amount just isn't enough. If I cook them on the stove, does anyone know what is the maximum amount that can be mashed in the TMX? DH did it the old fashioned way tonight and I miss my thermie mash!! Thanks...

EDC mashed potato is 1kg - surely you wouldn't need more than that, would you?? that's like about 10 potatoes.  :o :D ;)

For Canadian Thanksgiving at school last week I had to make enough mash for 60 people.  I started with the EDC recipe.  Then moved onto the MWOC Italian version.  By the end, Thermie was cooking 1.25kg at a time.  I was so over it after four loads and the RSI I developed in my wrist from all that jolly peeling.  What a pain in the neck!!!

Everyone did ask where I bought them from as they were just too delicious to be home made.  The insolence of it!!!!  They were jolly well home made.  Thermie and I worked very hard that night.

Confession time - I just wash the potatoes and dont bother peeling them - the mash ends up with tiny brown flecks in it, but you really dont notice it.

I am interested to know how you cook 1.25kg of spuds??  I find that if I do much more than 500g in the basket at once, the water bubbles up and over when they are cooking.

I fill my steaming basket to the brim and pop my spare basket over the hole.  Does anyone ever steam potato in the varoma dish in addition to having some in the steaming basket - would it cook at the same time as that in the basket or would it have to be cubed smaller?

I cook them according to the MWOC recipe, with the butterfly straight in the bowl.  Much faster than the basket. And Thermie didn't complain.

Haha!! me too! I only buy washed potatoes (sick of buying brushed ones that were green when you washed them) and cut them straight into bowl, no peeling - super easy and no one even notices.  ;)

I, too, never peel my spuds.  I think I read somewhere that a lot of the goodness is in the skins so I pretend I'm doing it for health reasons rather than for laziness  ;) ;)

Maybe I should try it too.  My Dad used to be horrified watching me thickly peel potatoes with a knife - never did like to use a potato peeler on a potato only on carrots.

l too  dont peel my potatoes  just wash and chop up
l still cook in micowave  and mash with a hand held  pototoe masher
if the holes are small in the masher the skin goes to the bottom as you mash
and the pototoe comes through the holes  and its all clean no bits of skin for the kids to complain about
my husband and l dont mind the skin mixed with ours
l will have to try in thermie as l hear it is nice
