Chit Chat / Re: Fresh figs
« on: March 01, 2012, 10:13:34 pm »
Cornish Cream, fresh figs, proscuito & goat cheese go so well together!  Our fig tree is loaded at the moment and we are all on a 6 figs a day diet  :D  Possums & chooks have their share too!
Goldfish, freshly picked figs don't keep for very long so hopefully you'll find some interesting ways of using your figs.  Jam is the easy option.  I also like baking figs (halved) in filo pastry with walnuts & butter.  Fig tart is good too...

Welcome to the forum Jacqui!  I'm also curious to hear what kind of ingredients you can use being in PNG... :)  I had friends living there and they had to substitute ingredients for others and adapt quite a few recipes.

Tasty, my first kitchen was tiny (2m by 1.5m!!!) - back when I was living in France and at uni- but it didn't stop me from cooking!  Actually remember quite a few good parties  ;D
One of my grand-mothers had a small kitchen for 40+ years and produced lovely dishes day after day. And, yes , the kitchen table was used for pastry or other food prep.
Bench space is a luxury!  In Australia I don't think that people always appreciate the amount of space they have...

Keiramax, I'm with you:  if you're lucky enough to build your own house then it's really exciting to plan what will work for your family   ;)
We built our house 11 years ago after thinking long and hard about design and materials we would use.  We're still happy with the end result! Our living areas face north and we have the right overhang on the eaves so we're making the most of the sunny winter days, and it keep the sun out of the house in summer.  Passive solar design makes so much sense here in Oz!

Kitchen design....
I guess it all depends of your family lifestyle...  How many people in the family?  Who cooks? Who likes hanging around the kitchen to "snack" or just to have a chat with the people cooking?

Our kitchen is the heart of our house:  centrally located (open-plan, linked to the family room) and always something happening or waiting to happen.  We grow lots of veggies and fruits + beef, lamb & rabbits  :D  And we have ducks & chooks for eggs and a couple of dairy goats for milk and cheese.  So there's always some produce needing to be dealt with, and I'm glad I have lots of bench space!
Our TMX sits between kettle and toaster:  convenient access in the centre of a L-shaped bench.

Ros have you thought about:
- light:  natural light (window style) + overhead lights?
- cooking style: will you have a gas/ electric/... cooktop/ oven?
- sink:  size? with draining rack? centrally located?
- pantry & fridge: side by side for easy storage of fresh veggies & groceries? different storage system for tins/ bottles/ spices....
- cupboards:  how many pots & pans, plates & glasses, cooking utensils do you need to store and where will it be convenient to access these?
- flooring?
- appliances:  what do you use all the time?- apart from the TMX  :)  Will you mind having some appliances on the bench or will you prefer "tucking" everything away?
- colours:  warm colours encourage appetite  :D

Just a few things that springs to mind.  Hope this helps!

Chit Chat / Re: For the Aussies!

This afternoon the kids and i went and threw some snow around... The kids had a ball as they love playing in the snow and i guess who doent lol but im still not looking forward to tomorow... Driving in it and probable icy nightmare..we will see in a few hours...

I definitely don't miss the snow!  Had my share of freezing days, icy roads and sludge when the snow starts melting... without counting frozen feet, even in snow boots!  Much prefer aussie winters  :)
Kim take care on the road.  Hopefully your "mairie" is efficient and roads are getting cleared, salted/ sanded.

Carine our chooks aren't laying much at the moment. I get one egg a dy if I am lucky out of 10 chooks. However the I am getting at least 3 duck eggs a day. If I eat too many duck eggs I get really bad stomach aches (worse than labour) and therefore can't use them for quiches etc. They are fine in cakes etc.

Not much cooking here lately as I am too busy with dad and the business. Looking forward to a day at home cooking tomorrow. Hopefully I will find some cheap bananas and other fruit in Coffs today, so I can whip up some new delights.

Shame about the duck eggs.  I remember a friend telling me he could only have them in cakes too, as he had trouble digesting them when they weren't cook thouroughly  :-\

You might get a few mangoes from Coffs.  My hubby is working over there this week and our boys are sure to help him unpack his car when he comes back!
