MF has sent me some photos of her wonderful trip. These photos are taken in Italy and she has given me permission to post them so will go over to Tapatalk and put them on. I hope I get the places correct and if not MF may be able to correct them.
Included are some absolutely delicious photos taken in the brothels of Pompeii but they are really not suitable for this forum. MF it seems spent a bit of time there. Maybe she will explain herself later. ROFLMAO!
Photos to follow.

-
Love the photos MF, Thanks Gert
-
That was quick Gert!!! Thank you so much for sharing my photos with everyone.
Tapatalk still not working for me.
That meal was a marathon but it was a fabulous dining experience. Our DS and his wife were there on honeymoon and he told us not to miss it. We were treated like royalty and the food kept coming and coming. We didn't want to offend so had to eat most of it. It was a busy restaurant but not in a street that tourists would find so we were the only non Italians dining. it was like being in someone's home as the owner welcomed all his guests with a glass of bubbles on arrival and on the house! What a special place.
Yes Gert we did pop into another restaurant after shopping last night but the truth is that we just wanted to sit down and have one, yes one glass of wine, but felt obliged to order a pizza.
Do you believe that??? ;D I couldn't eat a bite but it was a nice garden restaurant and we enjoyed sipping our one glass of ;D ;D ;D
-
Fab holiday, MF. You're doing lots of walking/sight seeing, right? So you can eat to your heart's content ;D
Love the captions, and funny Gertism's :D

Am loving this holiday. Keep the photos coming :)
-
where are we traveling today....
-
Today we left Florence and stopped in Bologna for a few hours on our way to Venice. A lovely hotel just across the water from StMarks square. Elton John has a house next door. We had dinner in the hotels garden and then took a hotel boat through the grand canal to St Marks square where we had a Bellini while listening to the orchestra playing. In bed now and ready to sleep :)
-
Did you see Elton John.
Sounds a great holiday :)
-
Norma, you must be staying on the same tour as we did because we also stayed at Bauer's great hotel isn't it?
-

-
Lovely photos MF.Brought back memories for me when we visited Venice years ago. ;D
-
It is a beautiful city CC and very interesting.
We had a lovely small boat take us through the canals last night to San Marco. It was beautiful in the dark with all the buildings lit up. Drinks in the square while listening to the musicians and then a few minutes over the water back to the hotel.
Going to Burano this afternoon for a late lunch and then we will have a stroll through the backstreets of the city away from the crowds.
We have been very lazy this morning and just back from breakfast.
Haven't seen Elton yet Robyn but will knock on his door later and invite him round for a coffee ;D ;) ;D
-
Milano glass is so beautiful. I have a very small piece.
-
Haven't seen Elton yet Robyn but will knock on his door later and invite him round for a coffee ;D ;) ;D
Double dog dare you!!! ;D ;D ;D You could ask if he has a TMX - the very thing to have in Italy!!! ;D ;D ;D
-
LOL........ I can just see Elton in his kitchen with his TMX ;)
You always make me laugh GF.
Wouldn't it be funny if I did knock on his door and he opened it!!!!!
Must take a photo of it :D
-
Perhaps you could catch him taking the rubbish out or hanging out nappies.
-
That would be a sight to behold cookie ;D ;D ;D
-
The glass shop looks amazing MF. Did you buy anything?
-
Yes we did Kimmyh. I bought the bowl in the photo but larger to put on my dining table and we bought a glass ball on a stand with the sunset inside. When you move or when the light hits the glass it looks like the sun is going down. Hard to explain. I bought a necklace as well which I am wearing in the last lot of photos.
I love the murano glass but wary of Chinese copies.
-
Stunning bowl MF. Will look fabulous in your home.
-
Lovely glass MF, how on earth are you getting your piece home?
-
They pack it and post it to our home address Judy and if its damaged they will replace it so long as we send a photo of the damage.
I could have bought so much there but very happy with what we chose.
-
Double dare to knock on Eltons door.
Love the glass Norma.
have fun today.
-
That bowl looks amazing MF and I'm sure will look amazing in your house. I can just imagine how long it would last in ours with DS kicking balls around!!
The necklace alos looks lovely although I can't see the detail. You look great in all the photos and seemed to be having a good mix of relaxing and sightseeing.
-
Just Beautiful Norma you and the bowl. As wonder said you look very relaxed, what a fantastic holiday.
-

Breakfast
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/15/e4upu6uj.jpg)
Not MF's but mine!
-
I would love some of that right now!!!!
They don't do breakfasts like that in Italy.
My mouth is watering :D
-
Ya shudda saved a piece of that pizza.
-
With DH around there was no chance of that last night.
Breakfast included here but as its only a sall hotel it's really just yogurt, toast , pastries and fresh fruit.
Yours is what I want!!! ;D
-
I've been away for a bit - how long are you away for MF?
-
We will be away for just over 5 weeks Michele.
How are things with you?
We missed you :)
-
Thankyou MF. All well here. I've missed you all too.
We have just been taking stock of our lives and simplifying.
You are obviously having an amazing trip. :D
-
Welcome back Michelle.
I'm loving the commentary almost as much as the photos
-
Gert has her own special way with words ES.
I am enjoying her commentary too ;D
-
I am working my way through my mails and I see some coming up from MF. Posting soon and then we are on our way to Copenhagen!!!
Gert
-
After a rainy day resting their stomachs he duo headed out for the Piazza Navona for dinner. They started with a salad MF says but I did not receive a pic of anything that healthy
So we have here Lasagne
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/16/y7e4ugup.jpg)
I have to say it looks a lot nicer than that other horrible place.
Then Penne Arabbiata. One of my favourites. Hope there was plenty of chilli.
This small meal was followed by a walk around the Piazza
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/16/tyrepyjy.jpg)
Well endowed fluter. Good shot MF.

-
While MF and her DH are walking I will show you a pic from a friend who is currently in Bangkok. This was taken in the lovely lobby of The Oriental Hotel. Just your normal flower arrangement you might try at home.
-
After a five minute walk around the Piazza the duo were once again ready for some food so they chose a lovely restaurant where they served a modest chocolate dessert called Tatrufo Nero which means huge chocolate calorie laden over the top indulgence for starving tourists!
I hope they sleep well as when they get up they are off to Copenhagen.
-
Beautiful photos of the fountain.
That's one huge flower arrangement.
-
I never saw any limoncello. UMMM.
Will we see The water of life or Akavit for breakfast?
Watch this space.
-
Thanks Gert and MF. The photos are wonderful and the commentary adds to them. :D
-
great photos, thanks Gert and MF
-
Sadly we are leaving Bella Italia today. We have had a wonderful time in this fabulous country and have met lots of lovely people along the way. Onto pastures new and looking forward to a totally new experience in Russia. Going to Moscow via Copenhagen with a one night stop there so hopefully we will have time to have a quick look around the city. Meeting friends that we met on our tour of Vietnam and Cambodia 18 months ago in Moscow where we are doing a 12 night river cruise from Moscow to St Petersburg. Should be fun and interesting and we can unpack on arrival which is a bonus after living out of suitcases for the last 3 weeks. :)
-
As always fantastic photos MF, looks like you are having a great time and the next instalment sounds even better.
Thanks Gert for keeping us all updated.
-
You won't know yourselves MF - 12 nights without having to rush here and there is probably needed after your very hectic 3 weeks. Enjoy the next stage of this wonderful holiday.
-
Thanks ladies and a huge thank you to Gert for posting 'all' my photos!!!
Yes Judy looking forward to some sleep ins on the boat as we have been on the go very early apart from yesterday.
Looking forward to catching up with friends and sharing the Russian experience.
Not sure about the wifi on the boat so if I don't post you will know why. They say we have wifi but whether it is relabe or not who knows but time will tell ;)
-
Take care MF
-
Will do cookie. Going to airport now :)
-
Oh goodie!
Gert
-
Great photos. Gert your comments are fantastic. You should do his for all the forum holidays :D
-
Nothing from MF this morning as It is sleep time and they had a long day and possibly no wifi at their hotel in Copenhagen.
Gert
-
You were partially correct Gert. We arrived at the hotel around 6pm last night and they wanted $50 for wifi per device!
They give everyone free wifi for one hour per device but only in the lobby so we are using ours now while having breakfast and a coffee. Didn't go out last night just had a bowl of soup and a glass of then an early night.
Flight at 10.15 hotel connected to airport and we already have our boarding passes. Luggage checked through from Rome to Moscow so hopefully its not lost on the way!!!
I know our riverboat has wifi but not sure of its reliability so if you don't hear from me you will know why. ;D
-
Ok MF thanks for update, enjoy the Russian cruise.
-
Quick visit to Denmark.
View from Hotel.

On our way to Moscow and I am hoping their luggage is there!
Gert
-
love the trip..
-
Arrived safely in Russia and onboard the Viking Rurik ship now. ;D There was a lovely bottle of bubbles in our cabin which we are drinking now.
-
Enjoy your cruise and bubbles MF. ;) ;D
-
Yahoo they are on the boat and what a cabin! I wanna go too.
Look close and I see a bottle in a bucket. The top is still sealed. What is that all about?
And they we have the view with balcony. Hope it is not too cold to sit outside.
-
Have a wonderful cruise Norma & DH. Looks like the weather is on your side so far, sit back, relax and take it easy!!
-
I love it. I am green with envy.
-
Hahahaha...Gert, your commentary is priceless! :D
Enjoy your cruise, MF! I've never seen such sumptuous lodging on a boat. HUGE contrast to the Duyfken, the first European boat to arrive in OZ in 1606. Had class excursion to Freo with DS8 yesterday ;D
-
It looks like someone has tried the bed for comfort ;D How I wish I was relaxing on a boat cruise right now. Have fun MF.
-
What a lovely cabin. Happy travels ;D
-
Thanks everyone and so far what we have seen of the ship looks lovely.
The bed is so comfortable that we slept till 8am which was a great treat after our early starts in Italy.
That bottle is empty now Gert as I took the photo just after we unpacked. We enjoyed it out on the balcony. It was drizzling when we arrived yesterday but the rain went off and temperature was warm enough to sit outside with the bubbly.
Exploring the city later this morning after breakfast and safety drill. :)
-
Pics of brekkie ?
Gert
-
Brekkie pics tomorrow Gert as we just had continental this morning quickly before the safety drill.
Enjoyed the extra sleep after our early morning starts throughout Italy.
Lunch at 12 and will take photos ;D
-
You just carry on having fun and don't worry about us Landlubbers. LOL!
Gert
-
have fun MF
-
What a fantastic holiday MF. Loving the pics and Gert's accompanying commentary :D
-
Thanks again Gert and MF.
-
Lovely photos thanks for sharing :)
-
Sadly it is cold and wet in Moscow this morning.
Gert
-
Wow Gretch, those pics are incredible…the colour of the water… {sigh}
-
Sadly it is cold and wet in Moscow this morning.
Gert
It would be the same for MF if she was home. :'(
-
Now where could this be . The buildings are very RED.
-
Mmm I wonder if it is a square?
-
Lovely Moscow River by night.
-
Had a great day yesterday here in Moscow. We had a tour into the city and saw many buildings from the Stalin era. Not pretty!
Went into red square and had a ride on the metro. Each station is amazing and all fitted out in marble. We saw so many statues and buildings but unfortunately I can't remember all the names. In the evening we went to a classical music performance which was fabulous then back to the boat for a late dinner? Visiting inside the kremlin tomorrow, as well as St Basil's cathedral and the armoury. Just had lunch now and going to the Cosmonaut museum soon. Cloudy here today and some light drizzle here early morning. Surprisingly not cold during the daytime.
-
Spiced carrot soup for lunch.
Lovely looking mixed salad

Pork in sour cream with potatoes and mushrooms
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/19/ne8ugu3u.jpg)
Austrian cheesecake with a strange texture. Looks like fake cream as well. Probably one of those canned things the Yanks love!! Was it MF?
This looks yummy. Love the old fashioned glass.
-
Yes it was fake cream Gert and the cheesecake had a curdled texture. DH didn't eat it.
Ice cream was delicious and overall the food has been pretty good so far.
Plenty of choice on the menu at each meal and always grilled chicken, salmon or steak available if nothing on the menu appeals.
Off to the Cosmonaut museum now :)
-
Can you forgo meals on the boat and eat out at all?
Gert
-
Looking good. Whatever is on those threes. Looks like chains and locks.
-
It'll be interesting to hear the story behind that photo Gretchen. Maybe tourists place their locks on there ??
-
Great photos and commentary again, thank you. The locks have me curious too.
-
Great photos again MF.Keep them coming and Gert thanks for posting :-*
-
MF, have just caught up with your wonderful holiday. Thanks to you and Gert for the photos. The locks on the trees and often on bridges in Europe are when lovers make a commitment . They lock the lock and throw away the key. I am enjoying every minute of your holiday. Thanks for sharing.
-
That is it Chookie. Here. is the lock my DD and SIL left in Positano after their wedding
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/19/u3ade7y5.jpg)
I wonder if MF saw it when she was there!
-
Exactly Chookie its called the Walk of Love in Russia and the same in Italy. When young people commit to each other usually after marriage they place padlocks onto the tree. Interestingly from memory in countries that do this the divorce rate is high and in Russia 50%.
-
Not easy to forgo the meals Gert as tours from the boat are scheduled to coincide with meals onboard. When we get to St Petersburg we have 2 days there to eat totally independently. So far food has been good but I keep forgetting to take photos at mealtimes. Always remember when halfway through.
-
Norma, looks wonderful. Love the locks on the trees, saw them in Paris.
All great here just not online much. Went to northland saw the Kauri trees and beautiful drives. Picking Liam and Kim up in 15 minutes. Just getting our van door checked as it has a problem.
Kribbit is fantastic as have navigon on iPad and it fits and stays in cavity on dash. Do love it.
Hi to all.xx
-
That is a bit of a bummer not to experience some restaurants. Are the meals Russian inspired? No matter, when you get to St Petersburg no doubt you will suss out a restaurant or two at least to find a curry.
Gert
-
Mornng Denise.Lovely to hear from you. ;D
-
What an amazing place this is.
Walk of love over the river. Now we can see the "trees" .

-
If you save the photos you can zoom them and see the details. Lots of people in Red Square talking on their mobiles . Lots of boots and some locals.
Nice the place is car free. Here you would see a zillion busses parked at the door!
What a place.
-
Gum from the outside. Nothing like it here. I remember seeing this building in the 1950s and there was nothing in the windows with people queuing up in front

Enjoying these photos thanks girls. Lovely idea about the locks, wouldn't you want to remove yours if you ended up divorced though?
-
Love the photo's, thanks Norma & Gretchen.
-
Lots more photos coming up but I have to go out this morning so I am afraid you I'll have to wait a bit girls and boys.
A really salubrious apartment has been photographed.
Gert
-
Ok just on before I must dash out the door.
MF and DH hopped off the bus to put a deposit on an apartment here. These were built during the Stalin era and are real vintage.

Interesting that we're seeing the pretty and and not-so-touristy images. Life has its challenges in every nook and corner. And its silver linings 😃

I wish I had known where it was when I was in Positano . It would have been lovely to see it .
-
Today we not only went to the Kremlin but also the Cosmonauts Museum
If you look closely you can see stuffed dogs, monkeys ( I think), stuffed battered and bent cosmonauts and lots of flying machines. Very interesting.

Just you wait to see all the new things in the new ios7 for your iPAd and phone MF. Wait until you get home though or you might get the Russian version! Also it takes a while to download and you need power and good wifi.
I think Apple has finally got with the program and not only tweeking but giving us a younger look. Not me of course but the devices which make all this possible.
Carry on MF. Are you cruising at the moment. A we bit different from the. Mekong, I'll see if I can find one pic from that cruise just for fun.
Gert
-
I saw that Gert and Ian was about to try to download it on his phone but I thought the same as you and suggested he should wait until we get home.
Yes we are cruising at the moment and the boat is very gently rocking while I am being serenaded by someone snoring!!!! >:(
Very different to the Mekong and the boats are very different too.
Docking in Yaroslavl around 6am. I want to go to the local food market there to have a look.
-
Good idea. Now who would be snoring I. The middle of the day?
Market in Uglich. From MF
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/22/eny6a3e9.jpg)
Market in Cambodia from my trip on the Mekong just to compare. I am sure MF has many photos for her trip down the Mekong too. Pity we. did not know her then!
What a world. What a contrast.
-
It's the middle of the night here Gert well 3.59am to be precise.
-
So that is why you are awake poor thing!
I have that exact pic of the rats MF? At first I thought it was mine! Will I post if for fun.
Gert
-
Yeah I will.
MFs Mekong trip to a market town in Vietnam .
Rats nicely skinned ready for the BBQ.
-
Of course you should post it :D Although I don't think anyone will be rushing off to the market to buy some.
Yes he is still snoring and I have nowhere to go!!!!
-
Really they are nicely presented on fresh ice. No fleas on them,
-
Is the bar shut? What is the vodka like ? I love Vodka in a shot glass with salt and pepper on the rim.
I am sure the snoring is driving you nutso!
Gert
-
My screen shot just now. Too funny.
-
Hilarious..... Spies are everywhere ;D
-
MF, you must be getting very tired if DH keeps you awake with his snoring.
-
More from a market in Vietnam . Took mostly VDOS with my iPad so have to use not so good screen shots.
THE boat and a pigs head.
Was you boat similar MF?
Was your pigs head better than mine? Maybe you could ask!! ROFLMAO!

-
He actually hasn't been too bad throughout the trip Judy but tonight it woke me at 2am and its now 4.20.
Have had a few very tired days but not many thankfully. He is awake now too so maybe I will send him down to the coffee bar to make me an an espresso. Bars closed Gert so a shot of coffee would be good. Must try the vodka your style :)
-
Boat very similar but your pigs head wins hands down ;D
-
Hilarious..... Spies are everywhere ;D
We know all about spies on this forum.
No point is trying to sleep now as you will be getting the sun up and food cooking. An espresso will be nice. Nice to have proper coffee stations. How civilised.
Gert
-
Send him down for a coffee for a couple of hours MF and get some more sleep :D It's a good thing you love him, otherwise he might be dead meat.
-
LOL then I could hang his head up and that would be just as good as Gerts pigs head.
Yes great idea Judy I will send him away for coffee so I can sleep. That's the easiest option.
-
Good luck Norma - hope you manage to get a few more hours sleep!!!!
-
sleep sounds good. i just had 1 1/2 hours sleep, now about to cook again. :D
-
No luck Trudy as we had a tour at 8am.
Just back on board now in time for lunch and then I may have a nana nap ;)
-
Just catching up on your travels MF, loving it. Glad you are enjoying your trip and thankyou for the photos. Thanks to Gert for posting also.
Marie
-
Loving the photos and hearing about your trip MF. Sounds like you're having a great time.
Thanks also for the commentary Gert!
-
I'm sitting in our camper in Busselton and it is windy ( I left the port home) and pouring with rain.
I have loved seeing these photos, thanks again MF and the wonderful Gert.
-
Can picture you in Bussellton cookie and we missing our usual WA blue skies here in Russia even although we know its raining at home!!!
Having a great time but keep imagining how different everything would look with sunshine and blue skies.
It is what it is and we are so glad we decided to do this trip. Have learned so much and would recommend this river cruise company 100%
We just won the music trivia and dancing competition tonight and the prize is our laundry done free of charge. We have heaps after 3 weeks in Italy so we are very happy. They took loads of photos of our dancing so will post if they give us copies. LOL
-
Sounds great MF.it must be the week for snoring Husbands.... Have had a few disturbed nights, a nudge or two usually fixes it. It's funny as it's been quiet for months and I know not why the return to regular snoring.
-
Oh boy, can't wait for THOSE pics MF and thatis an innovative and welcome prize.
Oh cookie I can only imagine your discomfort. Sigh😪😪😪
Gert

Mother Volga at sunset. Lovely. She is perched on the end of an island I think and there is a bird perched on her head poor lady.

Nice to see the trees changing colour and the seagulls hoping for some food when they see the ship
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/23/sa9e2utu.jpg)
-
I wonder where you are on the Volga now. It is a pretty long river. Is it very wide?
Gert
-
Congratulations on winning the prize MF, bet you gave the other passengers a great display. What a great idea for a prize and with you having so much washing waiting to be done, you couldn't have asked for anything better - who wants to wash whilst on holidays ;D
What's the average age of the passengers on one of these river cruises?
-
Well here is MF on her private balcony watching the seagulls as they traverse the lock. Oh ....what is that in her hand.
Would that be a Scotsman holding a scotch.
-
The lock is long and the drinks are flowing as well as the mighty Volga.
Looks like pink is the colour of the day! Yum. Wish I was there.

Locks and more locks. I guess they don't use horses on the tow paths to pull the boats through anymore.

Nice to see DH partaking in a bit of cultural dancing MF. I noticed there is not much parking space at that church, they must have to walk to that one :)

100 rubles is equal to about AU$3.40. There are 100 kopeks to the ruble. Therefore 1 ruble equals about 3.4ents
So now you can calculate the cost of these goodies.

Knew you would! ;D

you crack me up guys.. ;D ;D ;D
-
Just woke up ten minutes ago and had a great sleep. No snoring last night thankfully ;D
According to the ships map and fact sheet the Volga is 3688 km Gert and quite wide in parts.
Judy I would say on this cruise the ages would be between 50 and 80 possibly averaging around 65..
We are considering doing one in China next year on the recommendation of people on this cruise who have done the china tour.
Judy my back is feeling really good and hope it continues. Sorry I took so long to answer your question. :)
Naughty Gert ;D
-
Glad to hear the back is OK MF and we look forward to next year's cruise to China too ;D
-
love the photo's MF. What beautiful rooftops they have - I wonder if they would work here in Oz?

G
-
I see Brussels sprouts and cabbage? with the venison and is that red basil? Amazing there is sliced star fruit with the cheesecake. Bet the yanks have never seen that fruit.
Gert
-
Yes Brussels sprouts cabbage and red basil Gert. Well spotted.
The guide was telling us yesterday that most of the fruit in the market is imported.
The government allocated each resident some land and they all grow their own potatoes, beetroot, cabbage etc which is why their was none on sale in the market.
Russian dinner tonight and will be interesting to see the menu.
Breakfast is a buffet in the restaurant or continental in the panorama bar. I just had mine on our balcony. Photo to follow.
-
Ok brekkie. We have red grapefruit/watermelon, orange, toast, muffin, cheese, strawberry jam, butter and coffee.
BTW your nails look great. Did you have them done in Italy.
Gert
-
How many miles do you walk round the deck to work that lot off MF?
My sister went on a cruise 4 laps to a mile. In fact she's on a cruise right now! We had a text to say the winds had dropped in the bay of biscay....
Autumnal pic of rain and leaves is like here but we are in a dry few days right now.
-
Love the photos MF. Thanks Gert for putting them on the forum
-
This is an interesting church ruins. All the parishioners would have had to have a boat unless they could walk on water.
-
More wonderful photos MF. ;D Your narration is just "the tops" Gert :D :D :D ;D ;D
-
A real Lincoln Log home on the outskirts of town MF is approaching.
-
Good grief here is yet another monastery. This one in the town of Kirillov
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/23/ragazy7u.jpg)
Not many cars in this town.
-
OMG that food looks so divine. Gretch, you are doing a wonderful job at the blurb, and yes come to think of it they are a bit slow at topping up the glasses (but who am I to complain about the service)
-
Now you have to get out your glasses JD!!
-
Looks like a school yard or maybe a park.
-
A school yard I think as it looks like a school building behind the bleachers and next to that building is a PINK building. Interesting the kids are outside and not one of them is on the phone!
Gert
-
Well I woke up this morning to some really juicy pics and yes it was a school they visited. This from Mama Fergie.
Visited a children's school today in a remote town 20 minutes from the river. A very depressing place to live ones entire life. We are all so lucky to live in beautiful Australia
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/24/8eqy4e8u.jpg)

-
Another view of the church on a small island.
-
Now comes the Russian dinner.
It all looks very elegant in this presentation and no doubt delicious but to me something is missing in that I have always imagined Russian cuisine a bit more rustic served in home made ceramic bowls on a hand made wooden table in a cottage in the woods. The kids in the school would no doubt never have seen this presentation of a humble cabbage roll .
Vegetable Goluptsi with beetroot sauce.
Is that a serviette ring or a new acquisition from the recent market tour?
-
The inevitable Borcht soup? MF has this to say.
Disappointing as it was more like a consommé with a few cubes of veg rather than a hearty soup with chunks of beef, veg and flavour. This was bland.
-
Porjarsky Koteletti. Mama says
A sort of pork and chicken meatloaf in pastry. Ian enjoyed it
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/24/a6emenu8.jpg)
They must have someone in the galley whose job is just to pipe potatoes.
-
Russian salted herring on potato.
-
This Stolichny salad has quite a history. I have eaten many versions but the original is this.
The exact recipe — particularly that of the dressing — was a jealously guarded secret, but it is known that the salad contained grouse, veal tongue, caviar, lettuce, crayfish tails, capers, and smoked duck, although it is possible that the recipe was varied seasonally.
Where is the dessert MF?
Gert
-
All I want now is a big bowl of caviar sitting in ice and a bottle of vodka standing beside an elegant shot glass.
Gert
-
Still no caviar but here are the desserts. MF says
Sirniki ...Russian curd blini with blueberry sauce.
Notice there is someone in the kitchen also piping out the fake cream!!!
Honey Cake with ice cream and blueberry sauce.
We actually saw locals bringing bucketfuls of blueberries and cranberries onto the ship when we came back from our morning visit to the school and monastery
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/24/ze4use9e.jpg)
-
Lunch yesterday.
MF says. I can't remember the name of this dish but it was escalopes of pork in a spicy paprika style sauce with noodles that looked like 2 different colours of pasta to me. It was very tasty.

There was caviar at lunch a couple of times Gert so I must take a photo for you as no doubt it will be on the menu again sometime I don't like the stuff and neither of us like vodka. There was a vodka tasting night in the one of the bars last night but we opted for a bottle of bubbles in the piano bar instead. Wine list excellent and unlimited. We can take bottles to our cabin if we want to be anti social but of course it's much nicer to enjoy with new friends ;D Also cocktails anytime we want.
-
BWAAAAAAA! I would be asking for caviar for breakfast and I would never pass up a vodka tasting. Nope not even for bubbles at the piano bar. Well I would meet you there after.
Looks like you for the food ship with the good food. Friends on mine did the same trip. Bad boat bad food but ya get what ya pay for eh!
Like I say don't experience life from the cheap seats,
Gert

Cruising down the river. No that is night right. You must be cruising up the river.

I have seen similar in Tasmania and Canada MF.
-
This would make a good jigsaw puzzle.
Have you seen many animals MF?
-
Back in time and up the river Gert. Back in time in more ways than one. :)
Haven't seen many animals at all not even dogs in the villages and haven't noticed any cats either.
We saw some people walking dogs in Moscow but none in the countryside.
-
Lol. You probably didn't notice but you did capture a gentleman walking a dog in one of your pics in a village
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/24/7e3e4a6a.jpg)
-
Found it.
This was the village with the school.
-
I must look back at that one Gert and obviously I couldn't have noticed the dog. Still outside on the balcony and its a continuous stretch of forests and logs piled up waiting to be loaded onto cargo boats. It's never ending .
-
At first I thought it was CC but on closer inspection I see it is a gentleman. Same hair though. LOL!l
-
LOL it's amazing I dint notice it as the street is deserted apart from him and his dog!!!! ;D
-
Around the next bend there will something more interesting I am sure.
Soon I am off to the doctor for my last ever, hopefully, Pap smear. I was hoping I could put it off until my 70th but decided I had better do it as all you ladies must. Tomorrow is my yearly breast screen so that is me top to bottom this year.
Too much information I know but we are trying to pass the time here until the next church turns up.
Amazing what you miss at the time. That is why we have pics!
Gert
-
LOL good luck ;)
Think I have seen enough churches, cathedrals, basilicas and monastery's to last a lifetime but they are everywhere I turn.
-
It's interesting to see so many churches etc. wasn't religion banned there for many years?
Thanks Gert and MF I am really enjoying this armchair trip. So much poverty mixed with all the glamour.
-
If you ever go to Tonga you will see a church about every 500 metres!
Gert
-
I think it was unofficially banned cookie as they were trying to enforce a state atheism policy and many people were persecuted when found practicing their religious beliefs.
-
I am loving the pics MF
-
When we were driving through the city of Adelaide on our way to the retreat hotel, CC very quickly made the statement that there were lot of churches in our fair city. She didn't know we were known as The City of Churches so I thought her observations were very astute. Of course I take no notice of things like this in my own city.

That's right Judy I remember CC saying that on the way to the hotel. It was after you both picked up Bedlam and I from the airport.
-
I wonder how many churches there are in Adelaide?
Gert
-
I think it was unofficially banned cookie as they were trying to enforce a state atheism policy and many people were persecuted when found practicing their religious beliefs.
I remember DH's parents telling us about it and how religion sort of went underground when they were younger.
-
I remember that too in the 50’s.
Gert
-
I wonder how many churches there are in Adelaide?
Gert
All I can find out is that back in 2008 there were almost 750 Gert.
-

Ukrainian, although he was born in Australia. His brother wasn't though.

More great photos. The dish with the secret recipe looks great but I'm not sure i would try it after hearing what the ingredients might be. Guess some things are best left a secret.
Must say Gert, I am a bit disappointed there are no DH in the buff photos today. Not warm enough eh? ;) ;D
-
On it is warm enough but I deleted all the full frontals as it was too frightening
Gert

Last nights dinner.
Tomato mozzarella and bean tart. I hope DH's didn't have that what with the snoring coming out of one end,

MF says. Perch on buttered rice and vegetables. I think its called Sudak
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/25/7y6u6asu.jpg)
Forgot to say lentils were cooked with bacon and veg and duck was served with an orange sauce.
Had roasted garlic soup which was delish but I forgot to take a photo

There is also a specialist to squeeze the bottle of balsamic reductions or other sauces in a pattern on the plates! Or maybe it is the same one that's piping bag in one hand and the sauce squeeze bottle in the other
-
Just catching up here . . this thread needs to be bottled for posterity!!
;D ;D ;DOn it is warm enough but I deleted all the full frontals as it was too frightening
Gert
Thank you, Gert - after all, this is a family oriented, prime time viewing area . . . . ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I hope it's the same person squeezing the bottle as it must be so much more interesting than piping potatoes and fake cream ;D ;D ;D
-
Lots od pics roost. Because the photos are all different sizes as in Megabytes they may download from the server in a different sequence from which they are sent and may not be in sequence so forgive me if I get it wrong and because of the amount of wine i drank last night at a Penfolds wine dinner I may not be seeing them through the haze.
We will start with the last lock on the trip on the way from Moscow to St Petersburg .

The following are pics of the village of Mandrogy I think
Arrived here in Madrogy last night. Sandy from Canada and I decided to go for a walk after dinner. It was dark but we met some other guests coming back onto the ship as we were leaving. They told us one gift shop was still open and directed us to the building on the first corner 200 metres to the left. We used a torch and got there to find that the building was lit only on the upper level. We went in and went upstairs opened the door and walked into someone's home!!! We quickly closed the door, ran downstairs and out of the building. In the meantime the downstairs lights came on so we ran as fast as we could back to the ship. Had visions of being locked up for housebreaking!!! Funny but scary.
Will send you a photo of that building next

I have taken loads of photos of the colourful autumn leaves CC as where we live we just don't see this.
I vividly remember the autumn leaves falling in Scotland and then the bare branches glistening in snow in winter.
Lovely memories :)

Message from MF
In St Petersburg and just in from a walk with Ian. Cold here but a very beautiful city. We are going on a canal cruise this afternoon so will take some photos. Been hectic since we got here as we lost time due to unforeseen weather on the way here. Been to Swan Lake Ballet, Hermitage Museum/ gallery, russian Cossak dance performance and the obligatory churches, squares, palaces etc. Last night on the boat tonight then we have one night and almost 2 full days in a small hotel on the river. Indian meal a priority and then sus out other places to eat. Saw Jamie Oliver's restaurant in the heart of the old city close to our hotel but will give that one a miss I think. Sun has appeared on and off and a litte bit of blue in the sky. Hope you are both well x
-
Thanks for the update Gert, glad they are in St Petersburg and keeping busy by the sounds of it ;D

Looking forward very much to seeing my children and grandchildren and its always nice to get home :D
-
So glad the holiday has been so nice MF, always sad to leave newly made friends but once you are on that plane homeward bound then you will just want to be home and back into your busy routine. Enjoy the last couple of days and thanks for sharing your adventure with us. :-* :-*

Due to high waves on Lake Ladoga we arrived later than expected in St Petersburg so our cruise director arranged hydrofoils to pick us up at the head of the Neva river and take us into the city for tours as it would take the ship another 2 hours to reach the docking station.

I had put everything in about these pics but it disappeared. The church Is St. Peter's And St. Paul's. There is a military museum and some pics from inside the Hermitage....a Monet. Then there is a canal cruise where you can see whT I think is the very famous battleship Potemkin. Correct me if I am wrong MF.
I'll get on with posting without MF's comments NAND maybe I can add them later.

The Russian battleship Potemkin (Russian: Князь Потёмкин Таврический, Kniaz Potemkin Tavritchesky, "Prince Potemkin of Tauris") was a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet. The ship was made famous by the rebellion of the crew against their oppressive officers in June 1905 (during the Russian Revolution of 1905). It later came to be viewed as an initial step towards the Russian Revolution of 1917, and was the basis of Sergei Eisenstein's silent film The Battleship Potemkin (1925).
Following the mutiny in 1905, the ship's name was changed to Panteleimon. She accidentally sank a Russian submarine in 1909 and was badly damaged when she ran aground in 1911. Panteleimon participated in the Battle of Cape Sarych shortly after Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire in late 1914 during World War I. She covered several bombardments of the Bosphorus fortifications in early 1915, including one where she was attacked by the German battlecruiser SMS Goeben; Panteleimon and the other Russian pre-dreadnoughts, managed to drive her off. The ship was relegated to secondary roles after the first dreadnought entered service in late 1915 and reduced to reserve in 1918 in Sevastopol.
Panteleimon was captured when the Germans took Sevastopol in May 1918 and was handed over to the Allies after the Armistice in November 1918. Her engines were destroyed in 1919 by the British when they withdrew from Sevastopol to prevent the advancing Bolsheviks from using them against the White Russians. She was abandoned when the Whites evacuated the Crimea in 1920 and was finally scrapped by the Soviets in 1923.

If that I not the Potemkin Maybe it is a replica. Would have loved to see that!
-
Hope you enjoyed the bottle Gert and a huge thank you for posting my photos :D
The ship in the photo is actually the Russian cruiser Aurora which sparked a revolution on 17th October 1917 after she refused an order to be put out to sea. It is now a museum and well preserved.
We just had breakfast and have said all of our goodbyes although I prefer the lovely Italian 'arrivederci'.
Off to the Pushka Inn on one of the canal embankments in the old part of the city soon and don't know if we have wifi there. Staying only one night but a nice way to end a fantastic trip in this wonderful country. Altogether a great holiday with 3 weeks in beautiful Italy which has to be my favourite country in Europe. ;D
-
Finishing the bottle now MF? The ship was certainly circa the Potemkin so that is why I thought it was she but after further research I see the scrapped it. So delightful to see the Aurora in good nick. Lovely but of history.
I hope you get to a cafe or restaurant the locals use and I know a curry is a MUST!
Thank you so much for sharing. When the trip is finished I will download it all to my mac and delete from the iPad so if you need any pics I have them for you . Let me know then. I will delete your personal stuff so I can't use it against you. You might want me to especially delete the nudie ones eh.? I never would put those on the forum even if they were "interesting". LOL! Love that DH of yours.
