Title: Bermaline bread
Post by: cookie1 on August 31, 2023, 09:01:57 am
Hubby was over helping our elderly friend today, as he does each week. He came home with 3 Bermaline bread tins. They are different and apparently the bread was cooked so that it had a flat top. It used malt and wheaten grain and was quite heavy. I've been reading up about it and have become quite fascinated. I THINK it was around the 1930's or so.
I was wondering if anyone had heard of it? DH is going to clean them up and I plan to try and make some. I'm doing lots of googling and reading.

Cookie, how fascinating. Let’s know how you go. I’ve get an old recipe that I used to make a malt loaf with. I think it came from the 1950 s.

Thanks Chookie. I have found a recipe, just waiting for DH to clean them. He’s a bit involved with Nasho Fair Go at the moment. They are having a lunch at Optus stadium  later this month.

Cookie I’ll be interested to see how you go.
The loaf that I made that included rolled oats and marmalade and dried sour cherries was lovely in both flavour and texture. It is a very  good alternative loaf for a fruit loaf. I’ll make it again but in the TMX and oven, not the bread machine. To see how it goes.

It sounds delicious Chookie. I love sour cherries. I usually get mine at Costco with dried blueberries, pineapple, mango and any other different dried fruits they have.

You’re the perfect baker for this. Will read with interest how you get on.

We were looking at the tins yesterday. DH hasn't cleaned them up yet. He said he will sand blast them for me, then I will oil them and pop them into the oven.
