Chit Chat / Re: Whats your next cookbook?
« on: January 29, 2010, 08:33:54 am »
This is not a TMX book but all mums who are having trouble getting their children to eat vegies should have this one.  I went through it today whilst babysitting down at DD's place and have written out heaps of the recipes.  It is called Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld, yes wife of the Seinfeld chap.   They have hidden pureed vegies in them & would be so easy to convert, things like

rice balls with sweet potato
scrambled eggs with cauli
hot cocoa with sweet potato
doughnuts with pumpkin & sweet potato
carrot & spinach brownies
carrot & cauli muffins
lemon raspberry cupcakes with pumpkin & beetroot
banana marshmallow dip with pumpkin
blueberry cheesecake cupcakes with yellow squash
& spinach
choc fondue dip with avocado & carrot
gingerbread spice cake with broccoli & carrot
chocolate pudding with avocado
choc cupcakes with avocado & cauliflower
Choc peanut butter dip with carrot
+ more including main meals.
I loved reading this book and applaud her methods of getting her children to eat things that are good for them without knowing it.  It is going to take me forever to get through this list to convert, cook and post so if you are interested in these recipes I would suggest you get hold of this book somehow.  Perhaps even see if the library has it and copy some out yourself. It is brilliant.

Hi Jen, welcome to the forum.  Good advice from the others, keep everything for a while then decide.  Some things will never get used again once you realise the full potential of the TMX.  Happy cooking and enjoy yourself on here too.

In Australia condensed milk is in a 400g can and evaporated milk is 375g but there is one half that size available too. Unless it says so, you would use the 375g can.

Easy day today with leftovers but I made a jar of my beetroot spread and a batch of caramelised onions (my first effort in the TMX but not my last).

If you have enough patience, you can caramelize onions in the TM...place 4-5 halved onions into TM bowl and without chopping, add 50g brown sugar, 50g olive oil, pinch salt and a dash of balsamic and then cook with MC off for around 30-45 minutes at 90oC on speed 1. You will need to check the liquid occasionally to ensure you don't burn your bowl. The amount of liquid will vary from onion to onion! I have done this a few times now, and they are divine...and no standing around stirring!
I used this recipe for my batch of caramelised onion but added a splash of water to the bowl first as per Thermomixer's idea.  After 30 minutes they were nowhere near caramelised & I had to cook them for a further 22 minutes on Varoma temperature on speed 2. There were still some large pieces amongst them so I just sliced them by hand.  Delicious!  Plan to use them on some pizzas at the weekend.

I once read that you could keep these in a sterilised jar in the fridge for up to 3 months - not that they would last this long but would that be right???

I'd still have the demo just for the experience MJ.  When I first browsed through my FSA cookbook I thought it was ridiculous (although has lovely pictures) and just not the way us Aussies cook but from time to time we get reviews from those game enough to try things and I have been putting postits on any recipe that has had a review.  Surprisingly, they are mainly good reviews. The thing is, when is enough cookbooks enough and if we are not going to get around to using them then surely that is a waste of money.  They are free on the forum and enough there to keep us going for years.  Most of us are addicted to cookbooks though and just can't help but purchase any new ones that are published.

Glad she is going to be so close Cookie1, not a bad distance for a walk (if you are fit) and when she feeds you TMX cakes etc you can work it off by walking back home afterwards  :D :D

90 seconds to do a load of dishes  :o :o :o  No wonder it makes so much noise but I think I could put up with it for that short amount of time. I hate the way dishwashers take so long to do a load - I use a 56 minute cycle for normal use and a 111 minute for greasy loads - far too long in my opinion.

I have a special file named 'isi's recipes'  ;) ;) :-* :-*

I agree with you Thermomixer.  Many may have printed out the recipe and if they are active on this forum they can't help but see this warning whereas if it was removed they would be none the wiser, especially people who only pop in occasionally.

Darls, I would chop the pumpkin into 4cm pieces, place in the varoma dish (and use the tray as well if you have plenty to cook). Pour about 800mls boiling water in the TM bowl, put the varoma on top and steam on Varoma temperature speed 2 or 3 for about 15 minutes or so.  Just check to see if the pieces are cooked with a skewer.  Mash with butter and freeze in 1 cup portions.  Easy to take out, defrost and reheat in the microwave for those in the family who like it.  Leave the pieces chunky if you prefer but lay them flat until they are frozen so that you can just pull out how many pieces you want.  You could put pieces in the steaming basket too if you really have a lot you want to cook at once.  I use my varoma all the time for steaming vegies.

Today I made Lemonade and Orange & carrot juice from the EDC, cooked a chicken with the beer can stuck you know where in the weber along with potatoes, carrots and pumpkin, used the TMX to steam some cauli & broccoli, make a cheese sauce and then a batch of gravy to complete the meal .  The chicken had fantastic flavours - I put fresh rosemary, oregano, sage and bay leaves into the 1/2 filled can of beer. Thanks Gretchen for reminding me of this recipe recently. It went down a treat.

Money to be made but no-one is interested.  Can't understand it myself.  We do have lots of lovely recipes on here Thermomixer and they are being added to daily - can't keep up with all the things I want to do.

Hi darls (sounds a bit familiar saying that doesn't it) welcome to the forum.  Having a sister as a demonstrator you were a sure fire bet to end up with a TMX but you will have no regrets.  It will open up a whole new method of cooking and you will do things you have never done before.  Why?  Just because you can  ;D ;D  Whilst you are waiting for your cookbooks, check out the recipes on this forum.  You will go a long way to beat them.
