Title: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle
Post by: Rogizoja on August 15, 2012, 12:26:27 pm
I’ve just watched the BBC2 Horizon programme “Eat, fast and live longer” in which Michael Mosley explores the benefits of periodic fasting on health and weight.  Well I’m sold! I’m fed up with popping pills to control cholesterol, blood pressure etc, so just checking with the doc that it’s okay to get up and running (so to say!) and DW and I will get started in the next day or so.

In a nutshell (generally not many calories, but they’re difficult to chew!) you eat “normally” for five days and then fast for two; however on your fast days girls are allowed about 500 calories and boys about 600 so it shouldn’t be too onerous a regime to follow. Apparently this makes you body go from “growth” mode to “repair” mode and this brings the benefits. Hopefully I’ll be able to realise the weight and health benefits personally experienced by Michael.  :D

Therefore just thought I’d see if there are any like-minded souls out there who are doing or plan to do 5:2 and might be interested in sharing experiences – obviously using our Thermomixes to produce and share recipes for delicious, sub-500 calorie meals for the fasting days (lots of soup and steamed fish I think)  ;D.

If you have access to BBC iPlayer you can see the programme at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01lxyzc (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01lxyzc) or else visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19112549 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19112549) for a summary. Another good link is http://schrokit.wordpress.com/2012/08/11/the-25-experiment (http://schrokit.wordpress.com/2012/08/11/the-25-experiment)

HAPPY FASTING :D

Hi Rogizoja, I will investigate this further  :) I have been reading different research that definately does not support the 6 small meals a day and encourages fasting at times. I recently completed the HCG protocol where it is a VLC (very low calories) diet and found heaps of meals that were filling and tasty. The TM is our friend!

I would like to loose a bit more weight, but it is the health benefits that would make me try this regime. Currently, I eat GF, no added sugar, no additives, preservitates etc, and am interested in eating more raw foods. My DH eats bread, but otherwise is happy with whatever I cook.

I am pleased fasting allows so many calories - two days of water only each week would not be sustainable. Good luck if you decide to proceed with it. ;D

Interesting subject girls guys.  I read this topic as 'eat fast and live longer' and as I am a fast eater, I thought I was in with a chance here LOL
Good luck with it.

I read it the same way JD, thinking How can eating  fast make you live longer. Lol
Interested in finding out more, will have a look at the links tomorrow. I use to fast years ago one day a week, liquids only.

Rogizoja, count me in  ;D my DH will join as well. I would have loved to have seen the programm, but lots of info out there. Will try it and see if it's sustainable long term.

I thought I would follow the basic guidelines I used for the HCG protocol with Cyndi O'Meara on the fasting days. Two serves of 100g low calorie protein, 2 one cup serves of low calorie veggies ( white or green veggies), a few pieces of low calorie fruits, and lettuce or spinach and tomatoes free. So a meal Isa  plate sprinkled with rocket, a few cherry tomatoes, herbs , cooked veggies, topped with meat/chicken or fish. I used lots of spices and found it quite tasty. I do not want to be tied up counting calories and worrying about every bite.

I will start in September. Anyone else interested?

Great ElleG :D I've just spoken with the doc who's given the go-ahead. So, Monday/Tuesday will be kicking off with the first two "fast" days - hopefully the start of a slimmer, healthier pair of us.  And thanks for the low-cal tips - will definitely be using these. We also love miso soup so I'm sure that will feature prominently, maybe with some prawns/skinless chicken/veg for added interest.

Happy 5:2ing. Let us know how you get on  :)

Talk about coincidence - opened the Saturday Daily Telegraph and there's the article by Michael Mosley splashed over the front page (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/9480451/The-52-diet-can-it-help-you-lose-weight-and-live-longer.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/9480451/The-52-diet-can-it-help-you-lose-weight-and-live-longer.html)) with sub-250 calorie recipes by Xante Clay further in (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/9483381/52-diet-healthy-recipes-250-calories-or-less.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/9483381/52-diet-healthy-recipes-250-calories-or-less.html)). After this kind of exposure I'm sure lots more people will be trying this approach to improving health and weight.   :D

Okay, second day of second 2 of the 5:2. I'm down 0.8Kg and DW down 1.0Kg so something must be working :o.  So far we've found the fasting days quite easy; being able to enjoy tasty low-cal meals (steamed fish, laksa, lots of green veggies, barley soup mix) really makes a difference (though today I've got a work team lunch at the local greasy spoon so don't know how I'm going to handle that  :-\). Having no real restrictions on the "5" days makes a huge difference on the "dieting" mindset - just doesn't seem like a diet - so we'll persevere.

Anyone else out there interested in joining the crusade??

Rog, I will start tomorrow. My twin is already into her second week and has found it quite easy. She doesn't weigh herself, but is happy with how clothes are fitting. Another friend is also starting.

I've had a few hospital admissions, so now should be able to start and keep going. It doesn't look like much interest on this site, but certainly there is outside. Nice weight losses  ;D

Nearly finished the first 'fast' day, no problems with the food. Or hunger. Very pleased to have found out the Horizon's episode in now on You tube. I have spent the last hour watching it and it makes sense to me on so many levels.

So thanks Rog for writing about it  ;D

Can I ask what you would eat on a fast day?
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle
Post by: ElleG on September 06, 2012, 11:29:32 pm
I had an easy day yesterday. 2 cups of strawberries and two meals the same. I made zucchini noodles (spiralized zucchini) and a cherry tomato sauce, with herbs, spices, sprinkling of shallots and topped with 100g grilled chicken thigh. I also had two macchiatos, total less then 500calories. I know chicken breast is lower calorie, but I must prefer the taste of the thigh.

I think the spiralizer is going to make the two days easier as a small amount of veggie fills your plate with 'noodles'.

When I followed the HCG with Cyndi O'Meara it was basically a 500cal diet. Mainly 2 serves of 100g protein, 2 serves 1 cup of green/white veggies, free lettuce, tomatoes, onion and 3 pieces low calorie fruit. So no counting calories.

Great to hear others are taking up the lifestyle - as Michael Mosely said "this has the greatest potential for a positive impact on the nation's health" so spread the word. I'm doing my Paralympics travel champion duty at Waterloo station and spreading the word amongst colleagues - two are starting tomorrow on their 5:2.

Third set of fasting days under my (shrinking  ;D) belt and finding it easier and easier to adapt to the new lifestyle. I'm 2.5kg down and DW is 2.0kg down with "better fitting" uniform skirt, so very chuffed. A great filling recipe Shazzy is to cook up some soup mix (pearl barley, pulses etc.) with miso and just add a skinned chicken breast - delicious.

Happy 5:2ing.

OMG, Rog, that weight loss is incrediible  ;D Unfortunately, soup weather is finished here - around 34 -35 degrees each day.

First set of days nearly finished for me, fingers crossed, in a few weeks I can report the same weight loss.

Thanks Rogizoja. I appreciate any ideas regarding the fasting days. Havent quite got there to actually do it but love the thought of doing it if that makes sense!!!  I think I need to just feel that I have some ideas for the fasting days and be organised then I would be more prepared to start.

Loving watching the Para Olympics - London have hosted such a wonderful event!

Shazzy, for hot weather (and also not-so-hot weather) one of our family favourites is a "mega-salad" - lots of veggies, particularly green veggies (lettuce, brocolli, beans, mange tout etc) with some chopped up poached chicken or tuna with a low-cal dressing. Fills you up and is tasty to boot. LOTS of low-cal recipes online, just experiment to find what suits you best. Thermomix is great for the steaming and whipping up low-cal dressings; use xanthan gum as a stabilizer to reduce the amount of oil you use.

Well done on your first 2 ElleG, trust they were a piece of cake (so to say  ;D). Looking forward to hearing how it all goes with you. Don't forget, it's not all about weight loss but also healthier innards.

Hi Rog, I have lost about 20kgs over the last few years and in the normal BMI range, for whats thats worth. However, I still have abdominal fat, waist above the 80cms. . So am doing this for the health benefits, but a few more kilos off is a big bonus - get a smaller waist ;D

The health benefits sound wonderful. I have a family with strong history of cancers, heart disease, diabetes etc. so I would like to minimalize my chances of these diseases. Also have also had  a malignant melanoma, so have been told I have a high chance of a recurrence.
Next week I will split my days of doing the 5:2, and I feel this is a program I can adhere to.

Wow ElleG, 20kg, now that IS impressive. I too have a family history of cardiovascular issues (father died at 56, heart attack, younger brother's had quadruple bypass surgaery) so I too am looking for the health benefits. Though the doc did say that just losing some weight should reduce my risk factors. I'm looking to 5:2 as a long term lifestyle change.

Nasty things those melanomas - make sure you stay safe out of the sun. Hopefully 5:2 will help in that area too.

Best wishes :-)

It seems to be working - fourth set of fasting days done and dusted and scales tell me I'm now down 3.1kg (form a start of 91.0kg)while SWMBO is 2.4kg down (from a start of 70.5kg)  ;D ;D ;D.

ElleG - had another look at your spiralizer recipe looks great - on the menu for the next set of 2 (note to self : where can i get a spiralizer in the UK?   ???)

You can buy spiralisers online and Lakeland have them if you have a store near you. Congrats on the weight loss, it does seem like a more do-able eating plan than some I've seen. There were articles in the Australian press this morning about the Horizon program.

Thanks for the tip Bonsai, much appreciated.  Will have to go to Lakeland (need a couple of other goodies as well).

And good news about the Aus press - maybe there'll be more interest from your neck of the woods soon.

Rog, great weight losses continue for you. My DH is losing and I am NOT! However, early days and this is for health benefits, so I am continuing.

I bought my Benriner spiralizer on line through a Canadian seller on Australian EBay. Very pleased with it. I paid about $65 delivered. My friend has bought a much smaller one from China for about $12 delivered. We are waiting to see what it is like. I did a lot of research and decided and am very happy with it. However, $12 is very tempting  ;D

I see a few overseas blogs are now eating 5:2. Sorry I cant do links but Lavender and Lovage is one and Tinned tomatoes is another. Good reading and recipes.

Hang on in there ElleG, I'm sure you'll soon start to shed the kilos - I'm rooting for you.

$65 sounds a lot to me. Found a spirelli on Lakeland's site at £18 adn that seems pricey to me. Think I'll just stick with the julienne peeler!!

And thanks for the blog sites - seems there's a growing band of followers out there taking up the baton - should be a great source of low-cal recipes for fast days.

Persevere ElleG, persevere  :D

Well got up and spontaneously decided that I would do a fast day to see how I would go! I have loaded fitness pal onto my phone to help count the calories.  I think I have come in at 495 for the day. To be honest I have found the day quite difficult.
It has been an interesting exercise just seeing what food equates to what amount of calories!!

Really well done Shazzy  :D, you've taken the first step - now you need to decide whether you're in it for the journey  ???. I also found the very first day quite tough (the urge to "pick" was quite strong) but now I find it easier to stick to the plan. By the way, going to bed early also helps to get over the "end of day" craving (and maybe even work off a few extra calories as well!!  ;D).

Stick with it Shazzy and let us know how you get on.
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle
Post by: ElleG on September 20, 2012, 02:11:11 am
Shazzy, first day is always the hardest.  :D.

My husband has been happy to join me. He really missed porridge, so we are having oats with a little bit of milk and half a cup of raspberries. I find I cook a big meal for lunch. This week has been 150g chicken between us and lots of green veggies in the stir fry, and a veggie curry the other day. At night we have eggs (only one for me), lettuce and a few cherry tomatoes. Then finish with strawberries and yogurt for him. We have mochiattos (15 mls of milk), can't give up the coffee.

This week has been easier as we both enjoy porridge, the bulky meal fills us up, and the night time is fine.

Good luck if you decide to continue.  ;D I think the secret is to eat low cal foods that you enjoy, that are filling (lettuce, broccoli zucchini etc) and have some protein with them. It will get easier - I am writing down meals and the calorie count so in weeks to come, it will be easier to decide what to eat.

Thanks both EllieG and Rogizoja for the encouragement. I did fast again yesterday and it was a little easier. I did end up eating just over the 500 calories but I was working yesterday and needed ( :)) just a small youghurt in the arvo.  It also helped having celery and a punnet of strawberries to nibble on.  Any meal suggestions would be great.....
Sounds like you are both going really well on it. Will follow your progress with interest.

A fast day here as well. I couldn't have bought chicken and stayed strong Shazzy  :D

We had Indian Lamb curry today. It was lovely and VERY  hot. Worked out about 167 cals each - I didn't count spices, ginger, chillies or garlic - overall those calories won't make much difference

It had 100g lamb mince, fresh tomatoes, zucchini and a stack of mushrooms and lots of spices. Very filling, can post the recipe if anyone is interested - a mixture of a few different recipes and winging it.  Started in the TM, started to burn the onion spice mix and finished in the frypan.

DH has just eaten his and is very impressed  ;D

This is similar to what DH and I do (Fast-5) except that we eat one meal a day... That is, nothing until 5:00 pm Mon - thurs and nothing til 1:00pm fri, sat, sun (Though you can mix it up if you have too as long as its just the one meal a day ). It's very good for you to fast and amazingly it takes next to no time to get used to and has a lot of health benefits.

Wow Jude that is amazing - not sure I could do that - I stuggle with this 5:2!!

Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle
Post by: ElleG on September 25, 2012, 04:40:22 am
Jude, I am in awe  :D I also could never do it.

Shazzy, after a few weeks I am finding we are having 'set' breakfasts and dinner and having something filling at lunchtime.
Breakfasts are 2/3  cup of Oats, water,  1/2 cup milk = 284 div by 2 = 141 calls + raspberries 1/2 cup each 27cals
168 calories for breakfasts
13 cals for 15 mls of milk for a  Coffee mochiatto = 180 cal total

Dinner is either one egg (73 calories) for me and two eggs for DH, lettuce and either a few cherry toms (3 cals each)or 1/2 tomato each. DH has either 1/2 or 1/4 cup serve natural yogurt with berries depending on how many calories left. I usually have some berries, also depending on what calories are left.

I did some research and have found that Teresa Cutter, the healthy chef, has quite a few recipes that will be suitable for the 5:2 diet. She lists calories. I have downloaded her ebook.

I will put the Indian Lamb Curry (approx 183 cals) per serve,  in a separate thread in diets - so I can also find it again  ;D

Your body really does get used to it. You have a five hour food window, so 5:00-10:00 or 1:00-6:00. We find it hard to eat more than you normally would plus I get to have a few champers of a night :)
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle

Jude, can I ask,  is this for similar benefits that the 5:2 promotes? Or other health benefits? I know I have been on the HCG diet and found I got used to not eating until lunchtime. Now, I love breakfasts again. Five hours is not long!!! I think I would be on a feeding frenzy :D

We are getting into the swing of two fasting days a week. I am not losing weight, DH is, but have decided as long as I am not putting it on I am fine about that. ;D
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle

That's an interesting one Jude, though I think we'll be sticking with the 5:2 as the Fast-5 seems to be just too restricting for our lifestyle. Also I'd be interested to see if eating "normally" once a day would really deliver the health benefits of the 5:2/alternate day fasting etc. plans (I'm sure I could pack in a LOT of calories in a five hour window!!).

What I really, really like about the 5:2 is that for five days you can eat "normally" and for the fast days you can adapt your time of eating to when you prefer to east (breakkie, lunch, supper etc).

Happy fasting!!

Yes it's all about the benefits. My husband had very sore hips and was in a lot of pain but that has practically gone now. Relief from this sort of pain is one of the touted outcomes for IF.  Plus the freedom of not thinking about food all day. I feel great. Even though there is a five hour window we tend to eat what you would in a normal day or less.  I think that your stomach gets used to being empty so it is very hard to over eat. We stick to the sort of meals we enjoy and only eat treats on a Sunday when we have the family here for lunch. I really don't find this in the least bit restrictive. It's lovely to not have restrictions on what you can and can't eat though we do, loosely, try to be low carb on alternate days. For example we usually break our fast around 5:00 or 6:00pm with nuts and cheese (and a glass of wine), then about an hour later we have dinner, like salmon and loads of veg generally with butter or olive oil or salad and dressing or something like that. Next night might be apples or pears and blue cheese and then homemade wm bread and homemade peanut butter or curry and rice or pasta or whatever carbs you feel like.  There's really no plan apart from keeping away from overly processed unnatural foods.  On fri, sat, we change to midday meals and Sunday  is our "relaxed" day.  I don't talk about this with too many people as mainstream  think we are crazy :)  we have practiced skipping meals regularly ove r the years (generally compensating for too many social outings) but more recently after finding out all the benefits have settled wih Fast-5.

Jude, the IF is really interesting. Wonderful your husband has had relief from pain. Food can certainly cause our bodies lots of problems.

I have been doing some research - hadn't heard of it before  ;D. Certainly suits a lot of people, I am going to discuss it with my son. He often drops meals and he would like to loose more weight. The IF gives it structure.

We also eat as natural as possible and gluten causes me lots of health problems. I have finished four weeks and DH three weeks of the 5:2, at this stage it certainly seems doable. Hopefully we will get measurable health benefits from it.

Just wondering how you are going ElleG and Rojizoja? I have just completed my 4 weeks and really struggled with the last 2 days. I havent lost any weight on it and am thinking I may stop  :-\. I do realise that it is more than just losing weight and it is more about health but have been finding it difficult -   Just wondering how you are both going?

Hi Shazzy, we are sticking to it. This week i found it quite easy. I skipped breakfast, had my normal 2 mochiattos and then found i wasnt hungry until lunch. I realised i was eating breakfast, but could easily skip it. I made a chicken salad that was just over 100 cals, so had 1/2 cp yogurt and 1/2 cup strawberries for lunch. Had enough calories over to cook an omelette for tea, then more strawberries.

Also, if I feel hungry I have been blitzing one or two trays of ice, a handful of mint and one peeled lemon together. It is really refreshing, makes a good amount, takes time to eat and helps curb hunger. Leftover ice I use in soda water.

As for weight, all I can say is that it keeps my weight stable. I have chronic pain, so the meds tend to make you put on weight. Meanwhile, my DH is the lightest since perhaps his teen years. He has lost steadily - 6 kilos!!! If I lost that amount I would be delighted, be at the weight I want to be.. I hope he stops loosing soon, he is very thin. Men are lucky as well, no menopause hormones.

I really want the health benefits. I want to stay healthy, dealing with pain is hard enough without any illness thrown in.
I can post the chicken salad, if you need more inspiration ;)

I also wonder ow Rog is going  ;D. Good luck Shazzy.

Hi y'all, well done with sticking to it.  DW and I am now into our NINTH round of fasting days and getting into the rhythm though we appear to have levelled out from a weight perspective - we've both dropped about 4Kg overall and enjoying getting the (unprompted) confrimation from friends and family. I guess the levelling out is because we've been taking the guidline "eat what you want" during the 5 a bit too much to heart and have been pigging out somewhat  :-[. So over the next 5 we're going to eat what we want but just be a bit more sensible portion-wise (and no second helpings  :(); might even be able to shed a few more kilos.

On a positive note, I've been monitoring my blood pressure and that appears to have stabilised at a lower level as well (down from about 140/95 to about 130/85) - I even stopped taking one of my bp meds (I know, naughty of me) with no discernable change in my readings. So maybe I'm enjoying the emerging health benefits of the plan. I now just need to get my cholesterol checked with a full MOT to get the final verdict from the doc.

We've settled into a routine now taking Mondays and Tuesdays as fast days - we just have black coffee through the day with a cup of miso soup for lunch and something more substantial for supper e.g. we've used ElleG's lamb curry idea (great tip) or chicken lahksa (spicy meals seem to be more filling).  We're going to continue with the plan in the foreseeable future though might take a break over the Christmas hols.

Happy fasting - hang in there.

Long time no activity on this thread! :D. Wondering if anyone has continued with the 5:2? Rog, or Shazzy are you still on it?

I have had a few trips away and a  week in hospital, so over Christmas both of us have let it go. Very hard when you are visitors! My husband had dropped back to one low calorie day a week, as he continued to loose a kilo a week! So thin. Would only happen to a man.. We will restart it next week when we go back to 'normal' life. He hasn't put any weight back on and doesn't need to loose any more. I would like to loose a few kilos but am not stressing too much.

Interesting article today in the Daily Mail, re the 8 hr diet - sounds like 16hrs fasting a day. Sounds quite doable and not as restrictive as the 5 hr window.  We had settled into the 5:2 days quite well, but life does get in the way sometimes. ;D

Sorry to hear about your week in hospital.  Hope all is well now.

My husband is very slim too and trying to not lose any more on Fast-5. Just has to eat a bit more.  We both lost weight over Christmas/ New Year haha and ate what we wanted but just once a day.  Actually went up 800 grams on Boxing Day then down 1.3 kg a couple of days later.   Have been 3 1/2 months now so pretty much second nature and very easy.

Jude, well done  ;D I really don't think I could do the 5 hrs like you do, but  8 hrs sounds so much easier! The 5:2 becomes difficult when life gets in the way, like travelling, being visitors, hospital admissions etc! I am OK, just trying to manage chronic neuropathic pain.

I will be home next week, so will start a trial of the 8 hrs then.  ;)

rather late to the party here - watched the horizon programme here in Sydney via SBS online, and was intrigued.  A number of other school mothers seem to be doing it...

I have decided to try it out - and had my first fast day yesterday - and i think I over-drank... too much tea with milk... which may account for not feeling all that hungry!!

Are any of you still progressing with your fasting...?  can you update how you have fared?

I've managed to find some interesting recipes online... and as i'm now into day 2 (and mentally thinking that i'm starving... which of course I'm not) I'll try making a large soup to fill the gap...

if anyone else has any ideas or suggestions or recipes... i'd love to hear about them!!

with thanks
Gillian

Gillian, I started this about 5 weeks ago and in the first month I lost 3 kg and 4" off my waist.  I'd forgotten all about this thread but noticed it just recently.  I know several people trying it but my verdict of the 'diet' is that it is so easy and not like a diet at all.  I really look forward to my 'fasting' days and at this stage I'm still quite happy to have an egg on dry toast for breakfast with a cup of coffee (yes, I do have a bit of milk), home made vegie soup for lunch and 100g baked beans on dry toast for tea with a piece of fruit.  Sometimes I have a second coffee during the day but it depends on how busy I am.  Whilst visiting Geoff in hospital for all those weeks I took cold baked beans every day for lunch - I'm lucky in that I love the 3 foods I have on my fasting day.

I also found some great recipes on the web and have printed out heaps of low calorie foods to eat on the other days but in larger quantities.  I also find I'm being careful what I eat on the other 5 days which I find easy to do once I'm in the 'diet mode'.  I make healthier choices when I dine out, don't eat cake or biscuits at home and only have a glass of wine when out.  If I feel hungry on my 'fast' day I drink a glass of water but I've had no problems with those days at all and I actually look forward to them.  I do Thursdays and Mondays and just change those days to suit what is happening in my life.  I love the flexibility of it.  I noticed on some of the blogs I read that some people do the fasting 2 days in a row - I probably would find that harder and prefer the way I do it.

One of the soups I make is the Garden Vegetable Soup from Best Recipes (recipe No. 1117) in the TMX which is a weight watchers soup and although I probably could have 2 bowls for lunch, I only have one which compensates for me having milk in a couple of coffees a day (I hope).

Will post recipes as I do them but here's a few.

Stuffed baked Potatoes - 4 serves 325 calories per serve of 2 halves of potato.  I usually only do 2 potatoes at a time and give 1 to Mum.

4 x 300g potatoes -207 cals
225g broccoli - 16 cals
4 slices (120g) ham or cooked lean bacon, diced - 49 cals
120g cheddar cheese, grated - 52 cals
S & P
Oven bake or microwave potatoes (I do m/w, it's quicker) until cooked.
Cut broccoli into small pieces and steam a few minutes until soft.
Cut potatoes in half and scoop out the flesh.
Stir in the other ingredients, keeping back 1/4 of the cheese ( I usually add a bit of milk here, not included in the calorie count of course)
Arrange the potato skins in a large ovenproof dish and fill with the stuffing.  Sprinkle remaining cheese on the top.
Cook 10 minutes in a hot oven or longer if you have made them in advance which is what I do.

I usually have 1 portion only (163 cals) and serve it with a salad.
On a non-fast day I would eat both halves.

Chicken Noodle soup (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=12945.0) recipe posted on forum. This makes 4 serves and is 240 cals per serve (if using the garlic paste, a wee bit higher but nothing to worry about)

Broccoli & Leek Bake - 2 serves  250 cals per serve

Chop 25g tasty, low fat cheese - set aside, divided in half.
90 g sliced leek sautéed in TMX 10 mins/varoma temp/reverse/speed 1 in a small amount of olive oil. Remove & set aside
200g florets from broccoli lightly steamed - I did in the microwave 3 mins.
100g potato, very thinly sliced - I cooked them on my microwave chip maker & sliced them on the mandolin that came with it - paper thin slices.
285 mls milk, 1/2 the cheese, 1 tsp veg stock concentrate and 15g cornflour into the TM bowl - 5 mins/90o/speed 3.

Place the steamed broccoli into an ovenproof dish, sprinkle the sautéed leeks over the top.
Pour most of the cheese sauce over the top then arrange the thin layer of potatoes over this then the rest of the cheese sauce and the remainder of the grated cheese.
Either place into the oven or microwave and cook until vegies are soft and topping is bubbling.  I've had this on a non fasting day with other vegies or salad.

I think these recipes were from www.mumsnet.com or links from there. Just go to the site and search for 5:2 recipes.

My goodness - nice changes in your figure(s)....  ;D ;D

thank you for those recommendations... I've spent the morning and two cups of T&M (tea with milk) reading about this method... I am 'just about' to go and do some cooking... and gorge myself in the kitchen.... but I'm 'just reading' a bit more... and a bit more and a bit more...
which is great for the fasting side (my procrastination capability) seems to be coming into its own now... but has done not very much for the state of my house, the washing or my homework (now taking a tax course on a wednesday)....

nevertheless your recipes look to be very good...
you are a gem... thank you for them.

I also read online that someone in the UK has a bovril with hot water = 'soup' if she gets hungry - so i might translate that into a tablespoon of vegemite and hot water and see whether that helps!

I'm not sure if i'll go two days back to back again!!

thanks for you reply  ;)
regards
Gillian

My pleasure Gillian, been meaning to comment on here but your post made me do it today.  There are others doing it too so perhaps they will add to the recipes.

I love my roasted vegie stock concentrate as a broth on a cold day so I had intended to do that instead of the Bovril idea.

Still sticking with it here after nearly 9 months.  Slightly different version of 5:2.  My husband and I do Fast 5.  In this time my husband has had his BP meds halved and is looking like being able to go off them all together.   We eat once a day and anything we feel like. No restrictions.  Have both lost over 10 kilos. My DH got his blood work done and results back yesterday and all  great  results  and significantly better than last time.  Dr printed results from past two years :) interesting because we certainly are not living low fat.  Great way of living for the budget too :)

Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle

Well it is an eating window of 5 hours but we can generally only fit in a snack of nuts and fruit and our usual main type meal.  There's only so much you can eat.  And of course a nice couple of wines.  our window is usually 5-10pm but saturday and sunday is generally more relaxed to fit in with famiy etc.  If there is a mid day social event through the week we just swap to say 1-6 and then the next day back to 5:00.  with Fast 5 there is only one rule and that is 5 hours a day eating window and 19 hours a day fasting.   google for the free ebook The Fast-5 Diet and the Fast-5 Lifestyle By Dr Bert W. Herring.  This is a way of life for us now and we are more than happy this way.

LOL Amy - so do we -  and we can have what we like guilt free.  It is a very free-ing lifestyle to not have to count calories or worry about how much to eat and what to eat etc and still have the health benefits associated with intermittent fasting.  We have found that we naturally lean towards healthier foods because that seems to be what you crave at the end of the 19 hours.  Yesterday at break - fast I had a handful of almonds and cashews, an apple, a bread roll with butter and blue cheese and then a small helping of homemade pasta and tuna with homegrown broccolini (showing off my veg patch here) and of course my usual wine.  It was a very small amount of pasta and tuna because I couldn't fit in a lot after the other bits and pieces :) You feel as full as and yet  you have probably only had a modest amount of food.   I really think this is the beauty of it.  There is no way you can eat in a five hour period what you would eat in a full day of eating regular meals. You just don't want to eat any more after the first hour or so I would say, stomach must shrink through the day,  although sometimes we have some chocolate or something if we are still feeling like something else.  haha and I was down 600 grams this morning from yesterday morning :)

Like Judy,  I am doing the 5.2 and am losing 500 g a week.  Not a lot but over time it is making a big difference. Have lost 7 + Ks and 10 cm around the middle.   I also like the flexibility as we eat out a lot and entertain a lot.  I still need to reduce what I eat on 5 days, but the 2 days have made me aware that I don't need much food.  I need to exercise more, have had a sore back, and daughter is giving me a walking machine so will be able to exercise inside in wet weather.   I am also watching and cutting down on carbs.  I will stick with this until I reach goal weight and then will probably have to do 1 fasting day for ever.  Still better than yoyo dieting.  I find MyFitnessPal an app , a great help as it counts the calories and carbs.
Jude, do what works for you.  After years of dieting,  I have come to this conclusion.   The 5.2 works for me because of our life style.   I would encourage  members to try it and see if it fits.

Yes, Monday - Friday our break - fast is 5:00 - 10:00 unless there is a social event at lunch time in which case we swap things around.

Agree so much achookwoman about the social side of things.  This is a way of eating that does not impinge on those lovely social events and entertaining.  Like you we are out and about a lot and enjoy entertaining.

Wahay! Great to see the 5:2 is slowly attracting more proponents (especially JD - if she's doing it then it's a no-brainer  ;D) and well done to all of you who are seeing the outward benefits. DW and I have now stabilised at our target weights - I'm down 5kg and DW is down 6kg and so we're now only doing 1 day "maintenance" fast per week as we still want to enjoy the health benefits as well as the weights shift. Both of us have lower blood pressure and my cholesterol is heading in the right direction - all good.

One downside of all this weight loss is that DW has now informed me that none of her clothes fit her any more, so I can see the credit card is going to take a hammering shortly  :o.

I find if I'm feeling really peckish on a fast day, I make a cup of miso soup and that keeps the hunger pangs at bay - must be something to do with the umami taste satisfying the inner wolf.

Keep up the good work everyone and... Happy Fasting!

Do you have to do the two fasting days consecutively, or can they be any two days, i.e. Monday and Thursday, for instance?

My colleague mentioned this diet the other day - he said that his parents had started it as it was good for memory / mind health as they get older, does anyone know whether this is the case or not?
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle

Cuilidh, you can choose which ever two days you wish to do. I am doing Monday and Wednesday this week as it fits in better with what's happening.

Also trying something different. I always make work for myself  by stressing over calories and a friend said she buys a very low cal meal already prepared the has two eggs for tea. This allows her extra for milk or some fruit. I found a couple of brands that meet my very strict requirements (got to be food and not numbers) and did that last week. So easy.

I had started following the 8 hr fast, a bit like Jude's 5 hr fast - managed to put on a little weight, so back to an easier version of 5:2. My husband maintains his weight on one 5:2 day.

Good to see you there Rog.

Hi  Chookie, I must have gremlins in the system as I did not add that last quote! Don't know where it came from. ???

When I  following the 5:2 or the 8hr diet my BP and pulse both dropped. Pulse by 10. To 15 beats a minute and the systolic BP was under 120. I had been keeping a watch on my BP as I was close to being medicated. A month off either diet and the figures have started rising again.  So, I think I do benefit from this diet.

I agree time will tell about the health benefits, but I am hopeful there will be benefits.
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle
Post by: Rogizoja on May 13, 2013, 08:03:35 am
I think ideally the fasting days should be consecutive (more of a "shock" to the system) but it's not essential. DW and I started consecutive but then after a couple of months went to Mondays and Thursdays. Just do what suits you best.

Well done on getting your BP down ElleG, but a pulse rate of 15 beats a minute :o ? - I'd be moving soooo sloooooow at that rate! Good on the systolic but really it's the diastolic (resting) pressure you really want to watch. I started off at about 140/92 (I know, too high) but am now down to about 120/85 so heading in the right direction.

Regarding the memory benefits, I must admit I do still sometimes go upstairs and then can't remember what I went upstairs for only to then remember why when I go back downstairs again - and so the loop continues!! I should have done a before/after count of such episodes I guess!!

Happy fasting.
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle
Post by: ElleG on May 13, 2013, 09:19:37 am
Rog, my diastolic has always been normal, but they still medicate if the systolic is high. Yes, my pulse was in the 80s and sometimes 90s, so that why I could achieve such a result. Back into the5:2 swing, so all good.

I had a week in hospital and even though I did the 8 hr fast, still managed to put on a kilo or two. So, after falling off both wagons decided I would go back to 5:2, and the supposed health benefits did have a lot to do with that decision.

Great to see others joining I.  ;D

Another question ... does the fasting day have to be midnight to midnight ... can it be noon to noon?  My thinking is that, for me, eating lunch one day then missing dinner and breakfast and having lunch the next day would probably work, but is this the cheats way (I think it probably is)?
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle
Post by: achookwoman on May 13, 2013, 11:45:05 pm
Marina,  the theory behind the 500 calories is that it is a quarter of what a woman would eat on a normal day.  In the end it is the loss of the the 1000 calories that creates the weight loss.  To kick start the mechanics that do the other good things to your system you are to do without food for a certain number of hours,  I think it is 15,  but it maybe more. Some people eat just one meal a day of 500 calories,  some 2 meals a day, and some 3.  Yours therefore would probably work depending on when you had your  last meal on your 5 day.   Hope this makes sense.
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle

Thanks, Chookie.  I think I can work with that theory.  This will have to wait until after our trip away, but I am thinking I might just give it a try.

Sorry Cuildh, I think that is a bit dodgy - you'd only be missing two meals instead of three). Best and simplest approach is to fast from when you wake up to when you go to sleep (and that doesn't include afternoon naps!  :D).

Shazzy, I did the diet for months and was finding it harder and harder. I hate counting calories and cooking for a man who still wanted three meals a day was very difficult. Also lots of travelling for medical reasons and it all became too hard.

After advice from a friend I am back on it and finding it much easier. This time I have being having a long black iced coffee for breakfast and a low calorie supermarket meal for lunch. Two eggs for dinner and still enough calories left over for a cup of berries. My husband only has 5:2 one day a week and he has just over 100 calorie breakfast (same every time)  and all of a sudden it has become much easier.

Even though I am passionate about cooking, it is so much easier not to cook for those two days ;D
And to my surprise I have found a few brands of meals I am happy to eat.

Rog, I am into the green smoothies - never ever thought I could drink a muddy green drink and enjoy it  ;D

Cuidilh, I have tried French Bistro (gourmet to go), with St.Dalfour France, across the top. Have only tried Wild Salmon with vegetables from the range and I like it. 826gs  in the pack.

The other  brand is Tasty Bites, they are all Indian vegetarian and supposed to feed 2- we eat it as one serving without adding rice. My husband has eaten the higher calorie one, while I have eaten a spinach and paneer one. Looked like a murky green smoothie! But tasted good. No dreaded additives, colourings, flavours or numbers etc in either.

Cuddling, just reread your query - will leave that info for anyone who wants that info  :-*

For the green smoothie, I either follow a recipe or start with cucumber - peeled if it is not a baby one, small amount frozen banana, apple or pear, and whatever greens I have on hand. Often use lettuce (usually dies in my fridge), a small frozen block of spinach, have tried kale a few times (very expensive for something so bitter) and a  handful or two of ice. I also like fresh ginger and a squeeze of lemon or lime. I blitz for a little while and check if I need to add fluids. (Usually cold water) Blitz for about 2 mins and check the flavour. I might add a date or some almond butter and blitz a while longer. Very much on how it tastes, without it being full of fructose. I keep buying celery, but really don't like it as a base for the smoothie. Have a tin of coconut water to try and if I don't like it, it will be in a smoothie.

ElleG, I have a green smoothie everyday but not as concernced by the fructose as you so probably have a little more fruit and have never tried adding cucumber. I find if you include a banana it hides the taste of pretty much any greens.

I think it's very much a state-of-mind/heart thing Shazzy, much like giving up smoking. I tried many times to stop but never got further than a couple of weeks (guess my heart wasn't really in it). Then one day, more years ago than I care to remember, I suddenly decided "that's it", chucked the fags in the bin, gave away my pipes, tobacco and the rest of the paraphernalia... and haven't had so much as a puff since  ;D (though I do still have the odd guilty dream about smoking  ???)

So, once you've got the mind/heart sorted, it's a lot easier.

Happy fasting.

My DH and I started this 'lifestyle change' today and all seems to be going well so far, fingers crossed that we will keep it up.  We are doing Tuesday and Wednesday as our fasting days.  Chookie very kindly loaned me one of her books on this subject which had a lot of helpful and interesting background on the diet as well as lots of recipes.  I also downloaded some good vegan recipes from vegetarianrecipeclub.org.uk where they have a section on this diet.

Quite coincidentally, Michael Mosely's programme was on SBS here in Melbourne last night.

I'm seriously considering doing this for a little while. I have never believed in diets but this seems more a lifestyle than diet. Will need to do some more research though.

I've only done one day so far, so perhaps I am speaking too soon, but it didn't seem too onerous, and I even came out below my 500 calories.  My major problem was keeping myself under control and remembering not to snack - although I did have a bag of carrot sticks ready in the fridge, just to be on the safe side.  I really need to go to the bank today, but have decided it can just wait until tomorrow as I could easily be tempted by the shops down the street, my will-power is pathetic.  I hope this works for me because I do need to lose some weight and bulk.  Fingers are crossed, anyway.

Good luck with it Marina. It is a lifestyle change, rather then a diet. We are still on it,and once again I am cooking meals from scratch. I found 2 days in a row difficult, one is ok.

Still only do one day of the 5:2 per week, but do have other days where I have mini fasts. I exercise in the morning, then eat when I am hungry. Mightn't be until 11 -12. I maintain my weight, trying a little harder to lose a few more kilos. My husband is still very slim, so can't do 2 days a week, as he would be too thin.

Everyone is different with the weight loss. My DH lost 1kg a week on 5:2, so certainly doable, just harder for women. Unfair!
I do believe it has health benefits and that is probably the main reason we continue.

One of the things Chookie stressed to me when she loaned me her 5:2 book was that exercise on the fast days was important.  Needless to say, I haven't done any!

That's interesting because I read in one the articles that you shouldn't do exercise on the fast days. I do some form of exercise (gym or walk thanks to over active dog) most days so was wondering how to fit it in still.

I downloaded a recipe book to the kindle and might have read of a few others and plan to start next week.

Wonder and Marina,  I think one of the benefits is that you don't feel like you are continually on a diet.  The flexibility of being able to swap days is good because if something interesting comes up,  you can swap a day.

We have just completed three weeks on the diet and I found day two this week was much easier for some reason than it was in the earlier two weeks.  I haven't weighed myself or measured my waist yet, but I feel much better psychologically and I think that is just as important at this stage as weight loss.

Actually, must go out and buy a decent set of bathroom scales, ours are useless ... any suggestions anyone on good brands / makes?

Am finding I've reached the stage of life where for the first time ever the lbs are creeping on, it' s a shock!
Seriously considering doing this 5:2, hoping to get to 6:1.
What do you think, is it helping?
Chookie you seem to be baking still?
What are your weekly meals... On normal and fast days please.
Not sure DH wants to do this, but think I will give a try.

I shall use my fitness pal, does anyone want to be friends on there with me?
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle
Post by: Cuilidh on January 11, 2014, 09:07:53 am
DJ, we started this about the beginning of December and find it pretty easy.  We chose to do Tuesday and Wednesday for fasting, although DH is tending towards separating the fast days ... we'll see what comes of it.  We got a good recipe book at Xmas which had some great sounding recipes in it and Chookie was also kind enough to loan us a book.  The hardest part was finding recipes that were both vegetarian (me) and lactose free (DH), but we seem to have managed. I think you would find it easier if you were both on it together, but forcing the issue may be counter-productive.

So far, I have been having fruit for breakfast (leaving some for lunch and tossing in a few almonds) and having a 'main' meal in the evening - not a totally balanced diet so perhaps splitting the fast days is wise.  DH doesn't have breakfast, but has CADA for lunch then the main evening meal.  I think you just have to experiment a little.

I found that, in the short time we were on it before blowing everything over the summer holidays, I lost a couple of kilos during the fast time, but put them on again during the remaining days, so I think you might expect your weight to bounce up and down a little but hopefully the downward direction will predominate!

Good luck with it.

I'm not doing it at the moment but it would be my go-to plan if I wanted to lose a few kgs.  I lost 5 when I did it but that took quite a few months - I wasn't in any hurry though so it suited me.

I did the most simple meals on my fasting days, Chookie suggested it and as I love them all, it was easy to do for me. I hate diets but this wasn't like a diet to me and I looked forward to my fasting days. If I had to plan meals or count calories, I'd feel as if I was on a diet.

Breakfast - poached or boiled egg with 1 slice of butterless toast and a coffee
Lunch - huge bowl of home made tomato based vegetable soup
Tea - 100g baked beans on toast and a piece of fruit
I drank lots of water throughout the day

Most people say they couldn't survive on this when I told them what I was doing but I had no problems at all.

I think men can have slightly more than women DJ - 500 calories for women and 600 for men I think it is.

Ha!.  I have been this for some time!,   I posted a comment a couple of day ago but as on Hols,  the iPad decided not to post.
DJ,  this is about the only diet that seems to work for me.  I think it is the flexibility .  Provided that you do the 5.2 in the one week,  it seems to work.  Just a couple of points,  the first week is the hardest and try not to pig out on the 5 days. My Fitness Pal helps with this.
I find it easiest to stick to the same food for the 2 days.  I also don't cook ' interesting' things on these days as I am tempted to try them.  Ral doesn't do the programme but does eat the same food but with extra protein.
I would encourage you to give it a go and see how you cope.

Thanks chookie for this. As we have a friend arriving for two weeks tomorrow and he needs three large meals a day I think I will just eat moderately using MFP. I have cut out all extra sweet things except fruit, no chocolate.
Will see how I go. I don't think I can do the 5:2 safely while decorating the house every day. I am up and down ladders etc etc.
Today my snack was carrot sticks, and a very small apple.  ;D

Will report on how it goes. I found I last used MFP in may 2012 and since then have put on 9lbs and previous to that had put on a little. I'd just like to lose 9 or 10 lbs. if I got back to my previous lifelong weight then that'd be good too, but that means losing a stone. My bmi is fine, but I don't want to get larger and larger....

JD suggested eggs and beans in small quantities on fast days.

In fact I have had two eggs for breakfast twice this week with a small piece of toast and truly haven't felt hungry until lunch time.
I cut the toast into squares with 5 g butter, and put in a bowl. Chopped up two soft boiled eggs on top mixed with salt and pepper.
My mother called it coddled egg and it was nursery food.

I always thought middle age spread was a fabrication. However I have put on several kilos and it is all round my middle. I can still fit into my trousers and do the zip up but the button and band won't fit round me anymore. It's a damn nuisance. I lost weight on the CSIRO diet years ago but over time my portions have increased and I have a thermomix.  :D

I love the sound of the 5:2 diet. I saw it on TV earlier this year. DH likes the idea too.
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle

That 'middle aged spread' is a real drag (is that a pun?  If it is, please excuse it!).

It is much easier to do this diet if you are both on it, then you don't have to worry about preparing different / separate / 'special' meals and, because it's only two days a week, you don't feel deprived as if you are on a DIET when you have to be continually counting calories, etc.  Give it a try.  There are enough of us on it or looking at it now that there will be lots of recipes we can share.  Well, my recipes are vegan, so perhaps you don't want to share mine, but Chookie, Judy and all the others will have loads of inspiration for you.

My spread is not just the waist..... I had to buy new bras....LOL
I've never had a cleavage before.... Or ever had to watch my weight in 50+ yrs! I'd been one of the lucky ones.

However I am heartened as even this week by being sensible for a few days the scales have just started to gently go the right way....
My fitness pal is a big help. I was a bit hungry yesterday, but need to have healthy nibbles handy like carrots.

Bit more of a test with a hungry person staying.
Maybe  *: has added the lbs too!

DJ,  that is good.  I also don't know how to add exercise to MFP,  but don't worry too much.  I see any exercise as a bonus.  I put on a kilo while on holiday but it is coming off now that I am back on 5.2.  There are lots of good recipes on internet for 2 days.  You just have to decide how to do it.  I find 3 small meals good,  others like 2 or 1 a day.
Cookie, WW have just put out a new book,  called the Monday to Friday Diet,  or something like that.  This helps control the calories on the 5 days.  Very clever marketing.  The calories are counted and the food has variety and is the sort of food we eat.
It would help if DH also did it,  Ral is on it but doesn't know.   ;D. He thinks he is doing well by cutting out sugar in his coffee.
Cookie,  give it a go.  Nothing to lose,  except that bit around the middle.

Sorry, I've been off line for a while - but it's gratifying to see the 5:2 discussion is still going strong.

DW and I have reached our target weight so now only fast on one day per week, though if the weight starts to creep back on (e.g. Christmas overindulgences) we go back to two days for a while. Must admit we've taken the easy route now for fast days (got fed up with continually trying to count calories and portion control). So now we have a sachet of oat porridge for a late breakfast (107 calories) and then have a calorie-counted ready meal for supper with lots of black coffee and water through the day to make sure we stay under the 500/600 calories. It's become an integral part of our lifestyle now and we do relish not having to stick to a particular diet; so much easier. Blood pressure and cholesterol are also easier to control now.

So good luck everyone and persevere - you'll never regret it  :D

That's OK, DJ, you can start this diet any time when you are ready - I think if you try a new diet or eating regime when you are stressed it is not so successful.  Although, I know if I am wanting to start something I want to start it NOW, so perhaps you could quietly start on your own and not tell anyone - they probably won't even notice, especially if you have lots of food on your plate (i.e. salad greens).  Relax, your friend won't be with you all the time then you can really get into it.

DJ ,  I feel for you as this can be very difficult.  When we have visitors,  I now put all food on the table and let everyone help them selves.  They are so busy that they don't notice if I have a plate full of veggies.  Bit more difficult if only one guest.

Just watched a fascinating horizon programme.identical twin doctors aged 35 went on diets.
One high fat, low carb for a month
The other high carb, no fat for a month.

Very interesting. Neither are bad on their own, what is the problem is, is the mix, the 50/50 eg in cheesecake, ice cream and donuts. It switches our brains off to say no and wants us to have more.
Try and watch the programme if you can, it will be on BBC iplayer.
The twin on no sugar, high fat did more damage to his body. Both Drs were very surprised.

The specialist said that the problem nowadays is that things that used to be treats are everyday now. Go back to treating treats as treats and eat a moderate and balanced diet. With exercise.
Will repeat this in my sugar thread.

Thanks for that, Chookie, it sounds delicious and the calories are perfect, but I might wait until it is a little cooler before I try it on him - he loves soup.  Is the recipe on the internet?

I'm stuck for quick and easy breakfast / lunch ideas just now.  Generally I make a bowl of fruit and split it between b'fast and lunch, but, nice as it is, it is getting a bit boring.  Must look for some alternatives.  Might give rice paper rolls a go (but I have never made them before but think they are probably time consuming if you haven't got everything pre-prepared).

Thanks, Judy.

I am obviously missing something - I see the Roasted Red Pepper soup, the egg one and the watercress one, but not a cream of tomato soup.  I am so busy at the moment I think I am brain dead anyway ... perhaps my brain will have recovered by tomorrow and I'll take a look again then.

I had the same thought as you and took a double take as well, Judy, but Chookie mentioned almond milk so I realised it was different.  However, that capsicum one also sounds delicious so it will definitely go onto the menu in the cooler weather.  I'll keep hoping that Chookie gets back regarding her tomato one.

DJ I've been separating my low carbs from my fats & eating protein at each meal for the past year. Lots of girls are having success eating this way, but unfortunately nothing helps me lose weight :( , but I feel healthy, so that's a plus.

I have found the creamy tomato soup (http://www.london-unattached.com/2013/10/5-2-diet-recipe-cream-tomato-soup/), here it is.  It is also going onto my to do list.  Here is another set of good looking ideas (http://www.pinterest.com/jactinnedtoms/52-diet-veggie-vegan/) - it is Pinterest (or whatever it is called), but I don't know how to get to the actual recipes - there must be a way, mustn't there?  I'll have a wee play as it is only 5.00 am now so quiet enough for me to have an experiment.

OK, it seems that you have to join pinterest then, after a fair bit of scrolling, etc. you can eventually track down the recipe / fulller details of whatever you want.  It seems to take a bit of time, but then, that just might be me being impatient.  However, there seems to be loads of 5.2 Diet recipes tucked away in there so I will try to persevere.

Sorry I didn't get back to you quickly, Marina.  I just Googled it .  I am thinking of using some of  Mimi's recipes on the non fast days.  How about rice or corn thins with asparagus or peanut butter for breakfast.  40 calories in the thins. Also mini bread pockets are about 100 calories.  These can be stuffed with egg and salad. 180 calories.
I am testing some Raw biscuit recipes for a friend today,   This could be dangerous. !

Have fun with the raw biscuits, they sound interesting ;D

Click on the photo you like
Right click on the enlarged photo
Click on 'open link'
Scroll down to the recipe in print form, print recipe.  I don't know if there is a limit to how many you can access.

I guess it's easy to join pin interest though.

I am going to post a photo of a packet of noodles that are very low in calories and are used by some 5.2 people to bulk out a meal.  I bought these at Coles , $ 2.20 ,  I think.  11 calories per serve. They are made from.  Konjac root extract. I will try them today and let you know what I think.

We are doing quite well, but not using 5:2.
Have reduced sugar, refined, and all or any processed food.
More chicken/fish.
Lots of salads, and soups.
Less bread.
It is hard thinking of meals especially when working all day long.
I have lost 3lbs and DH lost even more.
See how it goes.
Next week will be a naughty week as have visitors.

I find I am looking forward to my two fasting days now - my hardest time is after eating in the evening; over the years I have got into the habit of having an extra nibble after I have eaten dinner and it is very hard to break this, however, I will continue trying to behave.  All the recipes I have tired have been really tasty and that has made a huge difference.  DH struggled a bit a week or two ago, but has made a few changes and seems to have settled down a bit more into the routine now.

We started this about two weeks before Xmas (the worst possible time) and didn't even try to follow it over the holiday period, then re-started during the second week of January.  So far I have lost approx. 3 kg and 1 1/2" off my waist.  That is encouraging.  I am not expecting anything dramatic to happen, but slow and steady will suit me fine.

Marina,  you are doing well.  I have been on and off 5.2 since last year.  I have lost over 6 Ks  but a lot more to lose.  It is still , to me, the easiest 'diet' to follow.  I do tend to over eat on the 5 days,  so am trying to control this.  Cooking bread in the Mini crock pot has had its moments as I like to 'test' what I have cooked.  2 day today,  so here I go again.  I agree that there are some nice recipes to try,  especially the soups.

I just had to share this recipe with you.  I got it from this (http://www.tinnedtomatoes.com/2013/02/52-diet-moroccan-style-potato-bake-233.html#.UuqdV7QhVMQ) site and t is our current favourite!

Moroccan-Style Potato Bake

750g potatoes cut in quarters,
1 litre/ 1½ pints hot vegetable stock
1 tbsp olive oil
1 red onion, halved and thinly sliced
2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely sliced
Zest of one lemon and tsp lemon juice
250g drained roasted peppers, sliced (I use the ones in oil from the deli and rinse the oil off)
1 tsp hot smoked paprika
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground ginger
2 tbsp tomato puree
1 tbsp white wine vinegar

Put the potatoes and vegetable stock in a large saucepan. Bring to the boil and cook, covered, for 12 minutes until tender but firm.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 230°C, Gas Mark 8 and heat the olive oil in a large, deep-sided, ovenproof pan over a medium-low heat. Add the onion and fry gently for 3–4 minutes, then add the garlic and cook for a further 3–4 minutes until softened and lightly coloured.

Stir into the onion mix the lemon, roasted peppers, the spices, tomato purée, vinegar and a little salt and pepper. Cook gently for 2 minutes.

Drain the cooked potatoes, reserving 400 ml of the liquid, then add the potatoes and reserved stock to the pan. Bring up to the boil, then put the pan in oven and bake for 14–16 minutes until golden (I cooked it for about 25 minutes).

Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

233 calories per serving.  Yield, 4 serves

Back on the 5:2 these last few weeks. Tried this chickpea yellow curry in my new 1.5 l crockpot, and it was delicious. Recipe is adapted from  www.tasty-yummies.com. Made half the original recipe for 4 serves. It was not a big serve, but I am not hungry after it. I didn't serve it with anything. The calorie workings are my own. I will add different veggies as well next time as it was so tasty and it will bulk up the amount.

Pumpkin & Chickpea Coconut Curry (Crock Pot Recipe) 180 cals per serve for 4 serves

240g diced jap pumpkin. 55cals
1/2 cup dried organic chick peas. 216 cals
11/2 small onion, chopped 15 cals
1 clove garlic, minced
200mls organic coconut milk 280cal
3/4  cup freshly shelled peas 88 cals
100g cherry tomatoes, 18cals
11/2 cups  vegetable broth or water
11/2 tablespoons yellow curry powder -approx 50 cals
11/2 teaspoon kosher salt
handful of fresh cilantro, roughly chopped

Rinse and sort through the dry chickpeas. Cut the skin off the squash, remove seeds and cut into 1 inch square cubes. Add all of the ingredients to your slow cooker besides the peas. Cook on high for 6 hours - I cooked it for 3 hours on high then 1 and a half hours on low. It was just cooked. Next time, might cook for an hour or two on high then reduce it to low until cooked. About 20-30 minutes before serving add in the fresh or frozen peas and give it a stir. I needed to add more water at 3 hrs as it was boiling and drying out.

Serve over brown basmati or jasmine rice topped with fresh cilantro, mint or basil and maybe even some shredded coconut. Add in the calories if you do so.

First time I have been really happy with a meal out of a crockpot or slow cooker  :D

At only 180 calories per serve, you can easily play with this recipe.

I don't have a slow cooker, unfortunately, so it would be canned chick peas and stove top for me for this recipe.

The original recipe suggests if using canned chickpeas add them towards the end of cooking time. Stovetop would be fine - I just wanted to play with the little slow cooker  ;D

I have lost 6lbs and DH more by cutting out processed sugar and eating a lot more salad and veg.
These recipes look good as some of the ones on the anti cancer thread.
No frying though, have learnt to sauté in stock in the wok.
We had fresh purple sprouting broccoli from the garden tonight, delicious, leek for tomorrow still in the ground. Fresh and tasty!
For mash we mix several veg - carrot, squash, swede, turnip and potato.
Each time is different and tasty.

DH bought a cookie to share when we were out this morning, we both found it too sweet. Result!

Had a piece of cake today. From freezer. A boost for all the gardening.  ;D
We eat much less sugar, almost none in regular meals.
Lots of fruit.
Home made muesli, no sugar.

I do miss some things ( like chookies lemon Belgium teacake) and we will have them in treats in due course. But this is not yet a complete habit so we keep going for now.

Have learnt how to sprout seeds for salads.

DJ ,  you are doing very well.  Stick with it.
I have been off the 5.2 for about a month.  The interesting thing is that I didn't regain any weight.  I think the 5.2 made me more aware of portions.  Today I start again. First day the hardest.

Well done, DJ and Chookie.  I, too, find that I am now more aware of portion (and calorie) size ... except this week, and probably next week as well, unfortunately.

I blew my diet days this week, but very encouraged overall .... last time I weighed myself I had lost 5 kg and 1 1/2" off my waist, but I expect that to bounce up and down and just slowly drop over a period of time.  Any planned loss of any sort is absolutely fine by me.

Anyone still plugging away on the 5:2 diet? I have been on and off all year. On at present.  A friend suggested a meal method that I have tried and thought worthwhile passing on.

It is basically cutting up veggies, meat adding all sauces, corn flour etc  for a stir fry then freezing without cooking in individual serves. It makes very low cal meals, depending on what you add, and my meals have been 150 to 190 calories each. I use 300g chicken breast for four serves. I thaw out in the fridge, and usually fry (with a splash of water) about a third at a time of the meal to stop it stewing. When the last third is nearly finished I add the lightly cooked portions and finish off together. First mouthful you realise it's not as crisp as fresh, and after that think its good.

I have 10 portions in the freezer at present. Did a big shop of greens and low cal veggies. Weighed and measured everything, wrote calorie count on the bags and they are good to go. Makes sticking to 5:2 day much easier.

Good one Elle.  I have been off5.2 for a few months while other health issues were sorted but now on again.   There is a new app which is excellent.  It is divided into Breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It is from Woman's day and $3 something.  It is just what I wanted as the calories are all counted and all recipes are arranged from least calories to most , in each catagory .

We have been on and off this diet for the past couple of months.  Finding it harder during the winter months as we both crave more hearty meals, however have found an excellent minestrone recipe that comes in at under 200 calories and it really fills us up.

I find it easier to do this diet in summer and love making rice paper rolls filled with just salad and maybe a dab or two of hummous for lunch (I don't make Asian inspired rolls, you can fill them with anything!).  My biggest query is breakfast, I hate fussing at that time of morning so generally just have a piece of fruit.  Chookie, what is the app you found?  Might have to look at that option.

Marina,  this is what the app looks like.
Type in 5.2 , in app .  It is by Woman.
I agree with you that this diet is easier in summer. There are lots of easy breakfast meals.

That sounds yummy.  Soups are so good at this time of year.  I'm not up in Guildford just now so can't do any cooking, but have copied this down for next weekend's cooking session.

What I really want is a magic wand to wave around and everything will be done (and the dishes washed afterwards).  Breakfasts are my problem, although I find I am getting used to having a piece of fruit so maybe I should keep with that, it means I can have a more substantial / lunch dinner and that seems to work.  Perhaps I am grasping at straws, as I usually do, believing that there is something easier / simpler just around the corner.  Maybe I should be satisfied with my lot as it is and not complain!

Marina,  we all would like that magic wand.!  Had this for lunch and it was nice.  Just over 1 cup,  so not much.  Dinner is 75 g of roast lamb and green veggies.

Chookie, the soup sounds good and very easy. I will have a look at the app. I make a roasted  tomato soup and also same recipe without roasting that us around 70 cals. I find if I am organised before hand. I will stick to 5:2 day. Hate getting up in the morning and having to weigh food and count calories, if I haven't pre planned the day.

We usually start the 5:2 day with a small serve of porridge with a splash of milk and 1/2 cup raspberries. Also have a macchiato using 15 mls milk. Starts the day well and keeps us full until lunchtime.

ElleG, every 2 day I start with 1 weetbix and 1/2 cup milk.  Don't have to think!  5 days,  either egg on SD crumpet or grain bread or porridge .

I'm not that convinced that any 'diet' will work long term. The period of fasting will cause the body to go into ketosis, where fat is burned instead of glucose, the preferred food.  This puts incredible stress on the body, which is okay if you're healthy. It's a fairly drastic way to lose some weight, but once a target is reached, it's better to to find a way of eating that you can continue for life.

I like the low carb/high fat way of eating that is promoted by Christine Cronau. I do lower carb, high fat, still eating my sourdough bread and the occasional cake treat. I don't eat any takeaways, but make my own versions at home.

Fat is vital in your diet, as long as it's good fat - saturated (tallow, coconut oil, lard, poultry fat) and monounsaturated (avocado, olive) and  other oils that have the right ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 (walnut, macadamia).

I refuse to count calories as I don't believe its the right way to lose weight. Reduce simple carbs - sugar, starchy foods, processed bakery goods and increase fibre and fat and you'll maintain your weight. This is the way I've maintained for over a year, now.

I still bake cakes and biscuits for DH, but most often using wholemeal flour and more natural sugars such as rapadura and maple syrup. Occasionally, I'll make more traditional cakes and biscuits, but I'll only have a taste. I find I don't actually like them.

MJ,  there are so many opinions on 'diets' and ways of eating that each one has to find what works for them.  This works for me .  The 5 days of normal eating are a great opportunity to eat healthy foods.
Title: Re: Eat, fast and live longer - the 5:2 lifestyle
Post by: ElleG on August 24, 2014, 11:21:43 pm
MJ, I use the 5:2 diet mainly to maintain a healthy weight. I do agree counting calories is not necessarily the best way to lose weight, as it is to easy to fall off the wagon, and stress over every mouthfull. And I hate counting calories. But, two days is not much.

We eat what we perceive as very healthy for other 5 days.  Low sugar, small serves of meats, legumes, nuts, lots of veggies etc.  mainly GF. I suppose what we eat is JERF (just eat real food) DH can drop a kilo a week, if he does the 2 days. I lose nothing!  After losing about 20kgs a few years ago, this is the easiest way to maintain a healthy weight and still enjoy food for me.

As long as it will work for you all long term, that's great. Just be aware if you're cutting out good fats, you'll lose fat from areas that you don't necessarily want to - e.g. face, breasts  :o and bottom (though some may be happy about that!).

I think you guys are aware of what good food is, but most others I've seen (on FB etc) who follow the 5:2 diet have no idea and just eat rubbish on their eating days.

It's definitely not for me, I couldn't be bothered thinking about it!!  ;D

I use 4 Apps, 3 relate to 5.2 and the 4th one is Myfitnesspal .  The 5.2 suits our life style as we eat out a fair bit and entertain a lot.  On the 5 days I try not to pig out.
None of the Apps are expensive.
I will try and post photos of what the Apps look like as there are quite a few available,  but these suit me. I have lost 3 1/2 Ks in the last 3 months.  Slow but better than putting it on.
5.2 diet,    This one has a Mauve front page.
5.2 Diet,     This one has a yellow and green front page.  I have taken a photo of the book that the recipes are taken from . The App looks similar
5.2. Buddy,  this is good for keeping a file of the most frequent recipes that you use.  Took me a while to work out how to use this one.  But it is good.
Myfitnesspal  is useful in that you can see your progress on a daily graph.  It also counts the calories in the food you eat each day.  I also try and walk 10.000 steps a day but usually it is between 6 and 8 thousand.
Hope this helps.

Hi All
Was interested to find this thread since re-connecting with the forum.  My husband has half-heartedly been doing 5 2 for some time and has lost a little weight, but mainly had been having red wine on his fast days!  I was very skeptical about the whole thing, even though I saw Michael Mosley's documentary. However, recently I have caught up with two friends who have both lost a fair bit of weight on the program and profess to feel in better health than ever.  One of them, for example, has found he no longer suffers from gout.  This sparked my interest.  6 years ago I lost 33 kg on weight wachers, but over the past 6 years, I have gained about 12 kg back and I just don't seem to be able to get motivated to stick to ww again.  While I was certainly interested in 5:2, I really didn't think I would be able to stick to it but in early December I had to fast  for the day before an operation and I found it less difficult than I thought.  Since then I have read the 5:2 book and have just completed my second fast day, haven't weighed myself yet, but so far so good!  I have found the first two fasting days quite manageable. I have had a green smoothie in the morning, some skim milk in a latte and some miso soup or broth and then a main meal with my husband in the evening. The first night I made a modified version of QFIT beetroot and fetta salad  with some lean beef and tonight I made the gingered beef also from QFIT (no horse radish cream, though!) served wrapped in lettuce leaves and some edamame.  I will enjoy investigating all the recipes, web sites and apps mentioned in this thread, thanks.

There was an amazing programme last night on BBC1
Horizon. What's the right diet for you.

Parts 2/3 tonight and tomorrow. Don't know if you can get it yet in Australia.

All about different types of eaters and different diets. There's an online questionnaire that everyone can do.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p02ddsv0/whats-the-right-diet-for-you-a-horizon-special-episode-1

I have gone back to cutting out extras and eating a lot more veg like I did last year. Not sure I can cope with 5:2 and 500 calls just now, although horizon said 700-800 calls on 2 consecutive days if you are a craver.
I started last Monday after I finished the strong antibiotics and with the combination of the infection and change of habits I've already lost five pounds. I'd like to clear some of the middle aged spread that suddenly arrived and fit back into my clothes!
Will keep you posted.

DH well into 2nd week of 5:2.  He lost 2.5kg the first week, which pleased him no end, because he didn't feel that deprived on the fast days as he thought he would. Just bought the WW 2-day Fast Diet book this morning. It looks good and like all or most WW recipes, easy to follow.

Katj, DH is doing very well. I lost 1 k and feel very happy with this.
I have collected recipes from various Blogs.  As I have 3 meals on 2 days , it can be a bit difficult,  therefore I didn't find the WW book all that useful. Even in the hot weather I find soup very good.
What is really interesting is that when I did this program last year, I haven't put the weight back on. I had to stop as I had a bad ear infection and didn't feel I could do it while not feeling %100. But here goes again. ,!

Cookie I think that you have done a good job to only regain 6 kg over 8 years, as in the past I had lost 17 kg then gained them all back plus more the minute I stopped dieting.  Even with gaining 12 kg over 6 years, at least I must have made some permanent changes to my lifestyle.  But now I need to turn things around while I still can!

Like Chookie, I lost 1 kg in my first week of 5 2, which is great.  I went out for lunch yesterday on one of my "feed days" and ate a bit too much, and also had a few too many glasses of wine one night and I feel a bit depressed and worried that I've "blown" it--it is hard to get over that dieting mentality that it is all or nothing.  I will press on this week and then assess if I can continue when school goes back.  I am a bit worried that I won't have the energy to fast when dealing with all my little preppies and my husband doesn't want to fast on weekends.

LellyJ, just get back into the swing.  We all have days like yours. I do a panic when it comes off too fast.  How silly is that?  The 5.2 people advise not to stress out when there are big events on,  just wait a while.  I would think that starting a new class of preppis falls into this category.  The preppies and their parents are very lucky to have you.

Lelly don't stress out. Tell yourself you fell yesterday but today is a new day and that is now history. It isn't easy.
It may be hard to fast when you are back with the little ones as they can be exhausting.

I recently bought a few diet books, the last arrived this morning entitled 2-Day Diet.  I didn't realise it was a Women's Weekly booklet so I was pleasantly surprised as I love WW books. With having the GKs here I haven't managed to read right through it yet but I'm impressed with what I've seen so far. Breakfast, lunch and dinner choices for the 5:2 diet which are easily doable.

Thanks for your kind words and encouragement, Chookie and Cookie and for the heads-up about the Women's a Weekly book. I am persevering with 5 2 for now, although Thursday at school will be the real test! Some things that have worked well on our fast days are asian greens steamed in the Tmx with 1 tbs of Ayam sauce (29 cal). Haven't used my varoma much before). I also made a version of Nico's Orange and fennel salad dressed with orange juice whole grain mustard and I teaspoon of EVOO per serve. We had it with some marinated bbqd gummy shark and it was delicious.(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/25/4023201351c39dd41683a421989873c9.jpg)

I've found my eating has had to have a fairly major turn around since being diagnosed with diabetes. Carbs are important. With complex carbs being the best. Whatever I am doing I've lost 13kg, the exercise has helped too!!

I've been to a couple of diabetes classes run by the diabetes people and they are really good and fun too. They help you understand it and they are only ever a phone call away. Sort of like AA I guess!!! Or even cookbooks anonymous!
