Post by: Itsnotartitsdinner on October 20, 2013, 01:09:08 pm
After looking at a few recipes today I just decided to chuck in what I have and make up my own.  This is what I came up with.

BBQ pork wontons

Recipe By: Me
Serving Size: 40
Cuisine: Asian
Main Ingredient: Pork
Categories: Steam

-= Ingredients =-
3 cloves garlic
500 gram Pork fillet ; cubed 3cm pieces
1 each shallot
40 gram Hoisin sauce
1 teaspoon Chinese Five spice
250 gram Wonton wrappers ; approx 40
1 each Egg ; beaten with 1 tablespoon of milk
750 millileters Water
270 gram Rice
sweet ; chilli sauce
Tamari ; or soy sauce
1 teaspoon Ginger

-= Instructions =-
This recipe will make enough for 40 x wontons and rice for 4. Freeze the left over wontons.

Place garlic, and ginger in bowl and chop for 2 seconds/speed 7

Add pork and finely chop by pressing turbo four times

Add shallots and chop for 3 seconds/speed 7 (depending on your preferred consistency)

Add hoisin sauce and chinese five spice powder and mix for 8 seconds/ reverse/speed 4 until incorporated.

Make the dumplings/wontons by spooning mixture into the centre of the wrappers, brush edges with egg wash. Close the sides by lifting corners and pinching them.

Spray the varoma trays with oil to prevent sticking. Layer wontons across both sections of varoma tray.

Add water to bowl and rice to simmer basket. Rinse with mc in 5 sec/ speed 8. Place varoma in position and steam for 18 minutes/ varoma/ speed 1.

Check the filling and wonton wrapper is cooked. Place in thermoserver.

Repeat with remaining wontons until all are cooked.

Serve with rice and sweet chilli sauce

Thanks for these recipes, I'll give them both a try next weekend. I've been making lots of dumplings recently just using chicken with a few asian seasonings and the kids love them. I find the gow gee wrappers easy to use. They make a great afternon snack for DS, i keep them frozen uncooked and he's now able to cook them himself when he gets home from school. They are always a hit with friends as well.

INATD, I've never eaten dim sims  and not much of a dumpling fan personally but I can't keep up supply here since starting to make them a few months ago. I make at least one batch a week at the moment.

Wow Wonder I would believe it though with growing kids!

Are wonton wrappers gluten-free? If not could you use rice paper?

The wonton wrappers I got had wheat but I think the Goyza wrappers were but you would need to carefully check. We deep fry the wontons and steam the Goyza wrapped dumplings.

Obbie, they might be worth a try. My kids are devouring these and deep fried wontons at the moment but I started out by just putting in mince chicken with a small amount of finely minced cabbage and spring onion but now add garlic, ginger, soy sauce and even chilli and mushrooms sometimes. My son who is the fussy eater in our family lives them and they are great to have on stand by in the freezer.

Made the bbq pork ones today. Great easy to follow recipe that tastes lovely. Mine don't look as good as yours INAID, but I will definitely be making them again. Thanks for a great recipe.

P for professional.

I'm going to grow some lemongrass in the garden cos it's too expensive to buy just one piece st a time

I agree CP. I've bought one of those squeeze tubes. As much as I hate them, much cheaper than fresh lemongrass. One recipe I make regularly uses 3 pieces 😳
