Chit Chat / Re: What are you cooking today?
« on: December 17, 2009, 12:40:35 pm »
After our tea tonight I decided to make DD a meal for tomorrow as they are moving into their new home (I'm babysitting here for the first time in ages).  Made the Beef and Guiness stew which I loved when I made it before.  However, this time it got quite mushy so I cooked some pasta up and added that to it which helped take up all the juices. Ended up with 2 large casserole dishes - 1 each.  Saved the day but I did want to present her with a nice stew, not a pasta dish  >:( >:(

Recipe Book Recipe Reviews / Recipe review - Eggnog Liqueur (Advocaat)

Eggnog Liqueur (Advocaat) page 45 Festive Flavour cookbook.
It says this is the thick version of advocaat but mine was very runny - I used low fat evaporated milk, would that make a difference. Obviously the colour was nothing like the bought variety but the flavour was still there.  I used a tall glass, added about 5cm advocaat and topped up with lemonade. I then drizzled some of the raspberry cordial I made yesterday down the side of the glass for effect more than anything else.  I spent a good hour on the internet this afternoon looking for cocktail recipes to try but seeing as I am giving most of this batch away, don't think I am going to get to try too many. Using other spirits as well as the advocaat, there's a fluffy duck, squashed frog, blonde russian to name a few and some from another site.... but I won't go there with the names of theirs  ??? ??? I digress.  What did I think of it - I would have liked it to have been thicker, had to go out and buy a bottle of vodka to make it so it was an expensive little exercise. It was quite nice though 3.5/5

How thick did you roll yours Cookie?  I'm sure someone else made a double batch of these (JulieO?) but I can't find her review anywhere.  Mind you, everytime I walk past the container, I eat one so they can't be that bad but they do leave a dry taste in your mouth, hence the follow-up drink (usually water Thermomixer). I'm trying to work out whether to offer them to guests or not.

What a pity Depome - it does sound like a nice recipe and obviously Angela enjoyed hers. Be interesting to see how someone else finds it.

Good for you Meagan, take a bow. Are you allowed to post any recipes from that international cook book?

Macadamia parmesan shortbread wafers from Festive Flavour cookbook page 22. I rolled them 2mm thick and cooked them for 7 minutes. Very tasty and easy to make but I found you need to have a drink after eating one.  4/5

Today I have made another batch of Sugared Amonds, Macadamia Parmesan Shortbread Wafers, Chocolate Hazelnut Kisses and finally Eggnog Liqueur (Advocaat).  The latter will be tested later before a review is posted.

Chocolate Hazelnut Kisses from  Festive Flavour cookbook page 24

I substituted the dark chocolate for milk chocolate so that children would enjoy the too plus I find dark chocolate is too rich and you can't eat as many ;) ;) ;)
I poured the mixture into those tiny coloured alfoil chocolate cups for a bitesized treat.  The mixture made 46 of them.
Excellent 5/5

But what would you to with a kilo of frozen crab meat Thermomixer  ??? ???  It is far too much surely.  Why don't they make smaller packs of 250g or 500g, much easier to work with.

I made 3 batches of the castor sugar to fill up my container - has got to be cheaper than buying it ready made.  I agree, icing sugar is messy, fluffy stuff that gets up your nose so I do prefer to work with castor sugar if that what the recipe calls for.

If you can stand the smell of ammonia Chookie, the washing machine goo recipe is cheap to make.  I still use that one at the moment.  If you haven't seen that thread it is here:-

Don't know if I would be game to make these as I don't eat 'mouldy' cheese.  What sort of blue cheese did you use Cookie1 and do you think I would even notice it if you served these up to me and didn't tell me what you used?

Glad I'm not the only one with the torch JulieO - great idea though I thought and now I have left my little torch on the window ledge for future peekings.
