Chit Chat / Re: My First Meal
« on: May 19, 2011, 01:28:40 pm »
I remember the excitement of thermie delivery day too, December 8th 2010 for me. But couldn't even tell you the year I got my breadmaker/rice cooker/microwave etc.

What is really awesome is that the excitement doesn't wane. Five months on and I am still amazed at how quick and easy it is to produce a vast array of yummy meals, soups, desserts, cakes, biscuits, breads, jams and more.

Enjoy!

Chit Chat / Re: High Tea

Hally your high tea looked gorgeous and has inspired me to dust off my Royal Albert Country Roses setting and plan some occasions to use it. Thank you.

Thermoheaven thanks for the Victoria's Basement link. I went there yesterday and got the matching teapot that I have wanted for ages but always thought was too expensive.

Fabulous food, beautiful china, friendship and generosity across the world. Loving this thread. It is an inspiration on so many levels!

Chit Chat / Re: What are your top 10 recipes?
« on: May 12, 2011, 02:54:52 am »
So many great dishes to choose from but this is the family's top 10 main meals so far. All can be stretched with loads of extra vegies or salad or quick bread rolls or whatever else I can think of to feed the five of us.

Spaghetti Bolognaise (EDC)
Shepherds Pie (EDC)
Lasagna (EDC)
Homemade Pizza (Dough from EDC)
Beef stew with buttermilk dumplings with loads of extra veg and fresh herbs (Budget Busters booklet)
Meatloaf (with lots of blitzed vegies) done in the oven with TMX potato mash and steamed veg (Forum)
Gourmet beef casserole (Forum)
Beef and Guinness stew (Forum)
Chicken and cashews with coconut satay sauce and coconut rice (Forum)
Baf65's Creamy chicken and vegies in the varoma (Forum)

Note to self: need to find more TMX fish dishes   :)

Thank you all for the welcome and the advice.

My recipe binders (already have 2!) with plastic sleeves are now functional but still works in progress.

Every time I come to this forum I learn something new or find a fabulous new recipe to try. I'm so happy to be part of this fabulous forum  :)

Recipe Requests / Re: Easy meal for a beginner
« on: May 11, 2011, 10:41:17 am »
I agree with Very Happy Jan, Quirkycooking's Chicken & Cashews is excellent and easy. DH loves it and says it is a restaurant quality dish (I'm not going to disagree with such a compliment ;D).

Just a couple of tips though:
-Don't be put off by the length of the recipe. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow.
-Read through the entire recipe to check you have all the ingredients (especially for the sauce at the end)
-Be careful lifting the lid of varoma when adding vegies (like snow peas) near the end of cooking when varoma is hot.

Have fun deciding Kellie and good luck  :)

Condiments and Sauces / Re: Best Cooked Mayonnaise
« on: May 09, 2011, 06:45:27 am »
This is our favourite mayonnaise and I love it because it is cooked (not keen on raw eggs). It is tangy and delicious. I halve the recipe (using two small eggs) and it makes two jars and lasts us about two weeks. Thank you meganjane for sharing this yummy recipe :)

Chit Chat / Re: Eating organic with a family of 5
« on: May 09, 2011, 06:31:01 am »
Goodness Renlor that is expensive. You haven't said where you live or how old your children are. We are a family of 5 (including 3 teens) in Sydney and we eat mostly organic for less that. Be happy to share suppliers etc if you are in Sydney too :)

Probably stating the obvious, but I have saved heaps using the TMX and the many great recipes and ideas on this forum. I make nearly all of our meals, sauces, desserts, breads, biscuits, cakes etc. Wish I could do links for you but I am new to this forum and still finding my way ;D

Thank you for the warm welcome. I swear that learning how to use a forum is more difficult than learning how to use the thermie!
Thanks for the tip about organising my recipes JudyDawn. I am also working my way through some of the booklets (like Budget Busters) and waiting for my FSA book.

Introduce Yourself / A belated “Hello”
« on: May 08, 2011, 07:55:29 am »
After months of lurking in the shadows, I have finally summoned the courage to register. (This is the first forum I’ve joined so please bear with me!) I have had my thermie since December and I love it! And, may I add, this forum is GOLD! It is always my first “go to” for information and inspiration.

Since day one, I have used recipes from this forum to feed the family—DH and 3 very hungry teenagers. We live in the Hills District of Sydney NSW.

My lovely consultant suggested that I make 10 things in the thermie on the first day to get used to it. A friend had told me about this forum, so I had no trouble finding recipes to try. My consultant supervised while I made vegie stock concentrate then left me to spend the rest of the day cooking. Soooo much fun. My thermie has been flat out ever since and my list of recipes to try is growing instead of getting smaller! :)
