A molded "lasagna"
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:27:10 pm »
I'm posting the following link, not especially for the recipe, but for the METHOD, which I think is brilliant.

Using the method, there are any number of "fillings" and sauces that could easily be made in the TMX and incorporated into this dish with not a lot of effort.

Lasagna Timpano

If any of you have ever seen the film, "The Big Night"  that is the construction that took so much time and was so elaborate.
This version is more doable and rather spectacular for what is essentially a layered casserole.

Most recipes go into complicated detail that in my opinion, discourages most people from attempting this dish.  The photos on the linked site are easily seen to be not at all complicated and something anyone could do.

Enjoy!

That looks so good and, as you said, what a great way to build a lasagna (or anything you want to call it).

I've made it in the past when I was catering, for large parties.  Rather than a large domed bowl, I made it in my rectangular fish poacher as that made it much easier to slice and serve.

I never thought to make it in a smaller form because the way I learned was the massive construction.   I'm going to try this for a potluck dish to take to my next book club meeting.  (Will also make a back-up item in case it doesn't work out.)

Thanks for sharing this with us andie.  I'm sure yours will be a success and everyone will be so impressed.  I liked the idea someone put forward of serving a piece on a bed of sauce - for presentation that would certainly look nice.

This looks great - do you think the pasta is cooked first ?  I can purchase 'fresh' pasta or make my own but wonder if it needs cooking before baking?

Here I can get lasagne noodles that do not require pre-cooking  (Barilla brand)  however I find that they turn out better if I dip them briefly in boiling water and then lay them between two damp towels until I am ready to apply them to the dish.

A friend simply lays them out on a wet towel, rolls the whole thing up and microwaves towel and all for 15 seconds - I've not tried this but probably will someday.

Thanks so much for the link andie. I also loved the music video!

I'm definitely going to make this. Just have to find the right bowl or container.
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.
