Title: How long have you had a TM and what convinced you to buy?
Post by: dede on August 22, 2011, 01:24:33 am
Just thought I would start a post for interest sake.
How long have you had your TM?
And what or who convinced you that you needed a TM?

I have had my TM since January 2011.

And the first time I heard about Thermomixes was when my sisters friend used to say how much she wanted one. She eventually brought one and invited me to demos but I never went because I thought at that price I wasn't even interested at looking. Eventually my sister got the bug and brought one and I started to see the amazing things the TM could do and became very interested my self. I did some research and joined this forum. I soon was addicted and just had to have one. It didn't take much to convince DH as he loves food. I never went to a demo before I ordered my TM as I was already convinced that a TM would be a huge benefit for my large family of 7.

So when and why did you buy a TM?

My DD2 invited me to a demo at her place, she had seen the TMX at another demo and mainly had hers so that I could see it.  I had never heard of it but she convinced me I would love it so I went along knowing I was going to buy something very expensive that I knew nothing about.  That was back in Oct 2008 and although I was slow getting going as I had no success with anything much in the beginning (hated the EDC) once I found the forum there was no stopping me.  I love my TMX and I love this forum so my life has changed dramatically since becoming an owner. I always loved to cook so the TMX was never going to just sit there and look pretty, it was just a matter of getting the confidence to use it and finding some good recipes from home cooks who had tried and tested them.  There is no problem finding recipes these days but back in 2008 it was a little different.
I realise that the EDC has had some tweaking done since my edition so things are probably better in that regard but I still prefer the international cookbooks and the forum.

:) Hi I bought my TMX in Sept 2009,  so nearly 2 years old. ( I also bought my husband 2 cars the same week.)
I read a review on taste, and wanted one, ordered sight unseen knowing i would love it.

Now my Mum has one, and my best friend.

I met a couple of friends a couple of years ago at the shops, they were raving about this new piece of equipment they had in the kitchen. They said I would love it. When I asked what it did they said everything. There began the research! Lots of research! Until eventually my husband  organized a demo and bought it or me ...to shut me up.
I can't believe that was only June - it feels like it has been a part of our routine forever.  I love how my shopping trolley has changed,no processed goods.
Love the forum, although JD, I think the EDC has improved, I wouldn't have had the success I have enjoyed without the forum..
My DD thinks the final song from Wicked, because I knew you, is mine and thermies theme song.( for anyone who has seen Wicked)

I got my Thermomix in January this year (after wanting one for ages).  I first saw a Thermomix on a food program on the Lifestyle channel.  I was immediately curious about this gadget that could do everything and went off to “Google” it.  I remember telling my partner about this new kitchen appliance I just had to have – he laughed as I already have every other kitchen appliance on the market.  I then told him the price and he stopped laughing!

Months went by and I still wanted one but told myself I didn't need one, whilst still “Googling” it every second day or so.  We then stumbled upon a Thermomix demonstration one Sunday morning at the Wayville farmers market, what luck!!  After the consultant blitzed raw sugar into icing sugar in seconds my partner was sold.  He sat there mouth opened for the rest of the demo, not believing what Thermie could do.  We have to get one is all he could manage to say!  He (not me) spoke to the consultant and arranged a home demo.  There was no way I wasn't going to buy one now  :)

I don't use it everyday - but I work a full-time job in four days (my choice to have every Friday off), its only my partner and me at home (we can only eat so much) and my partner also cooks (I even let him use it  :D).  On my 3 day weekends I use it constantly.  I don't know if it's saved me any money (if it has I’ve spent it on Thermomix cookbooks anyway!).

I’ve always loved cooking and I love my Thermie and can’t imagine now life without it.

I got mine in April 2010, seems like much longer ago, I read about it on a saving money forum of all places! Googled and youtubed it, couldn't get a demo for 6 weeks so ordered it sight unseen then ended up with a delivery demo a couple of weeks later, I use in numerous times everyday, I was trying to cut additives from our diet and the TM has totally changed the way we eat, ( for the better ). My TM sits on a board ontop of my cooktop ( under the range hood as I use the Varoma all the time ) so I rarely use the cooktop anymore.

I think this post would be interesting reading for people who are yet to decide about getting a Thermomix. It may just help them make the decision. Cause we Thermomix owners know that it would benefit absolutely everyone lol.

Late 2010, not sure exactly when  :D

Took a long while to decide, in the end, the time saving factor was a big one for me. Being dairy/soy free and failsafe, alot of time is spent in the kitchen, the thermomix makes some of the tedious jobs so much easier (jams, ketchup). With a toddler, time is precious!

I was tossing up between a kitchenaid or the thermomix, but with all the extra functions of the thermomix, it won. I have still such a long way to go, and there are sooo many more levels to cooking with the thermomix, it feels like a fab investment, as as I get time, I can do more. And when there is no time, I can just stick to the basics!

I bought mine in April 2009. Two of my friends had bought TM's (one became a consultant) and I went to see a demo at one of their homes. I honestly thought the demo food was a bit boring and couldn't really see the value of the machine on the night. When our reno bill came in $2000 under budget later in the week I started thinking though and decided that perhaps a TM was just the thing for me. My friends were both loving their machines and I decided to give it a go.  Hubby was surprised that I wanted one, but very supportive (I am normally quite careful with our money). We were thrilled with our purchase right from the start. Joining the forum was certainly the icing on the cake though. Such good fun and great inspiration. :-*

I have to agree 100% that the forum and the TM just go hand in hand. Without the forum the TM would just be a great machine. But with the forum the TM is a brilliant kitchen machine.

I bought mine nearly two years ago. I heard about them online, and did lots of research before going to a demo.  I ordered one the next day, only because I told my husband I wouldn't buy one at the demo!

I was convinced by healthy, homemade food without the time, inconvenience and mess!  Also I had a baby and a toddler at the time, and was constantly ruining dinner because someone did a poo, then they'd fight, then someone would want feeding- I would forget to stir dinner, or take it out of the oven!

Now 2/3 sisters have one, an aunt, and about 20 of my friends!  I should have been a consultant, but no time to spare :)

I've had my Zumbo since June.  My sister-in-law has a TMX and after seeing what it could do I had to have one too.  Thought about it for a few months (big expense), researched it and finally organised a demo at the end of which we signed up.  Very satisfied customers!

I got my TMX back in May 2010.  I first heard of it from a friend who had one and was inviting people to a demonstration.  Unfortunately I was unable to attend but my interest was piqued so I did a bit of research on the internet and asked other people about it (some had heard of it, but none had first hand knowledge of it).  I rang my friend back to say that if she was having another demonstration to keep me in mind.

I thought nothing more about the TMX until she rang a couple of months later to tell me of a demonstration led by Jude Blureau – this time I was able to get to the demonstration and that was it all over.  The benefits were instantly obvious - I went home and raved about it to DH and, shortly after that, there was a Back to Basics class nearby so I dragged DH along and the outcome was inevitable.  By then he had decided he was fighting a losing battle to say no, anyway.

It helped that my food processor had just died a sad death a month or two before and I was looking to replace that – buying the TMX instead was a “no brainer”, as they say.   I didn’t find this forum until several months after I had purchased my TMX but I’ve not looked back since.  TMX and the forum = marriage made in heaven!

Saw my SIL's machine on Christmas Day, and she showed me how she makes custard. Then I had a look through her EDC and I was sold. HO was closed over New Year, and I did lots of (secret) internet researching in the meantime cos DH said it was abit expensive for a kitchen appliance  :-)) So that was January 2009, and its been true love  :-* ever since. Belonging to this forum has made the whole experience very enriching.

My husband (a chef) bought our first one. Around 1984/5. I recall that I was faintly irritated by having another machine in the kitchen plus it was a bright orange. Uggh! :P  At first I didn't use it at all but then made my first soup. I liked it but I didn't feel very enthusiastic. Sadly, my husband died in 93 and I decided to exchange the orange one for a 3300 model, happily in white! 8).  I became more enthusiastic with this one and then Thermo mix wrote to me and asked if I was interested in buying the TM21 as they were getting rid of stock to make room for the TM31. I was hesitant at getting it just for me but then I told myself that I deserved it. I did use it but certainly not to the extent that I use this TM31. I am now almost three months in to my TM31. I have become a Thermy addict  and with the help of this forum and the Cyndie O'Meara philosophy, I am a fresh foodie convert. When I get around to it, I intend to look through my husband's posh cookery books and perhaps convert some of the recipes.
xx ;D

Back in March 2009 a friend of mine had become a demonstrator and was nervous about her first demo.  So I offered to let her do a practice run to the two of us just to help her out.   Little did I realise that we both would be completely won over.

It did help that it was the year of our BIG birthdays - I had already bought him a very expensive coffee machine for his, so it was a no-brainer as to what my birthday present would be.   I was very brave and waited until May to take delivery of it.

Since I got a sewing machine for Xmas when I was around 13 years old, I think I've never been as excited about a present as I was about this one.   And I use it a heck of a lot more than I ever used that sewing machine (although I've still got it)  :D :D

it was waaaay back in June 2008 when my DH came home and TOLD me about this fab machine a customer of ours had told him about. It apparently did everything and he was certain that we needed on. I was tasked with finding out more information about this "Thermomix" thing!!

Let me tell you that back in 2008 there was not a lot of information out there on the big www  :-)) :-))

I managed to find the cooking class link and booked in for the local one here (I think it was also the first class in the area!!) I saw the B2B was impressed but wasn't sure I wanted to buy one... This is from a person who didn't know how to cook, burn carrots all the time (my kids will tell you that honey doesn't hide the burnt taste  :o lol).

I came home and talked it over with DH and we decided with the 5 kids etc that the time and money saving would have to be at the very least worth our investment. 10 days later I ordered our TMX  ;D ;D

Little did we know the journey we would undertake and the difference it would make in our lives!! I wish I could post a video of DS4 in all his glory before we started on the no additives journey. My goodness even I had forgotten until I watched it again the other month. His teacher doesn't believe me when I tell her what he can be like when he consumes additives and preservatives.

Like JD I have to say, it was this forum (and the old yahoo one) or really Thermomixer and Brazen that encouraged me to keep going. Now if I can't do it in the TMX I don't do it!!! I have thrown out my pans and my TMX sits on a custom made bench on my stove top.

This is once VERY VERY HAPPY Thermomix family ... the down side, none of the kids want to move out unless they have their own :P :P

My three moved out but insisted on the promise that I and my sewing machine (not the Thermomix) would be available to them.

Had my Hermy nearly three weeks! Initially I was impressed at the time saving and dishes savings (in my family of 3 ds plus husband). Also loved being able to do so much with raw and basic ingredients, without the packaging, preservatives or any other crap. I loved that it made it so easy to include nutricous additions to meals (eg nuts. extra veg- very handy with picky eaters) and that I could create wealth of fabulous meals with only the one machine. The price, yeah it a bit of a sting, but I think (hope) it will pay for itself before very long. In the meantime I have found a new love!!

I got my Thermomix on the 14th September 2010. Will remember that date forever.. (What's my wedding anniversary date??  :P)

First heard about it 4 years ago.. Friend of a friend was extolling the virtues of it & the mashed potatoes it produced. I thought "Bugger - a lot of money for mashed potatoes!".. She loved cooking - I didn't - so I didn't take too much notice.

Fast-forward August last year. Life wasn't great. I'd lost my brother the month before and it had shaken up the whole family, but we were trying to move forward. He'd suffered from debilitating arthritis his whole life, so we knew he was out of pain. The loss was huge though.

My consultant-friend invited me to a cooking class. I decided to go, just for something to do.

That was it. I was absolutely gobsmacked. I hated cooking, but had to. I wanted to feed my children healthy meals, but had always resented being in the kitchen. I knew this thing would help me - with my cooking and just in general state-of-mind stuff. It excited me.

My husband was against it. He "knew" it would sit in the cupboard once the novelty wore off  :-))  The more I researched, the more I realised just how much it would help me. The fact that it could help with my son's food intolerances was the clincher.

Four weeks later I had it. 2 weeks after that I was training to be a consultant.

My parents say I have a new zest for life. They're right. All because of a kitchen appliance! :D

A friend asked me along to a demonstration of a "cooking appliance" as a neighbour of hers was thinking about buying one.I went along and didn't have a clue to what I was going to see. This was back in the "old" days when the TM21 was on the market.I was blown away at what the TM could do and fell in love with it there and then.I spoke often of buying a TM but because of the expense I never thought I would get one. Then five years ago DH arranged a demonstration for my birthday (by then the TM21 had been upgraded to a TM31) At the end of the demo I was told by the the demonstrator that the TM was mine because DH had already paid for it.We celebrated with champagne :D :D  DH then bought me a second bowl for a Christmas present. ;D

oh thats so sweet of your DH CC  :)
Karen glad to hear you have a new zest for life thanks to thermie  :)

I had heard of Vorwerk because my mother in law had an antiquated version of the thermomix...orange and silver thing that mixed and heated and thats about it (so early days) but she raved about it and how expensive it was was great too 'back in the day' and still worked...remember thinking well your a bit nutty for spending so much money on what is essentially a blender.  Some time later I was invited to a themed party at my neighbours house....seems to be the thing around of late for everything from cooking appliances to candles and lingerie, anyway she invited me to come and I said sure what for this time and she said Thermomix so in the time leading up to the demo I had a look online to see what this thermomix was and nearly fell off my chair at the price thinking she is mad and there is no way I am ever going to spend that kind of money on any appliance.  I told DH and said Ill go but I wouldnt be long as I wouldnt be interested in it..the price tag just put me off as I have a tendancy to buy, use then I get over it and it gathers dust, anyway he told me to go but NOT to buy anything.. off I went and I think it took about 5 mins and I was sold lol...the consultant laughed and said later that everybody is like that ie not interested because of the price until they see it!  Anyway I came home telling DH Im getting it, he tried to put me off for a few days as he had intended getting it for my birthday later the same month but my hounding broke him quickly and at the one on one demo at our house we bought it (its a thing in France that everyone at your demo gets a dish cooked for them as a 'gift' at their house (no obligation) ...that was july 2010!  Oh and also love this forum....!...and needless to say I got home quite late as I stayed right to the end!

2 of my super healthy and very slim friends have Thermies (one of whom is now my TM consultant), and I developed product envy - my subconscious mind figured that if I had one, then I'd be super healthy and very slim too ;) Yes I know it doesn't work like that, but what control do we have over our subconscious minds?? When our blender/food processor died about this time last year, I was hopeful, but DH felt it was way too much, and he was convinced I would hardly use it. We bought a Vitamix (nearly $1000), but it didn't do food processing, so in Jan this year I bought a Magimix (nearly $600) - after those combined expenses I should have just bought the Thermie to start off with!

For Christmas last year, DH declared he was buying himself a new surfski (+/- $2000), which he has only used a handful of times, so at the end of July, I plucked up the courage and declared I was buying us a Thermomix, and needless to say, in the 2 weeks that I have had it, I have certainly used it more than a handful of times! I will be keeping the VM (it really does make supersmooth green smoothies, and as we have these every day, we need to love them, and it also mills flour much finer than TM), but the Magimix is up for sale!

I am a vegetarian who has recently gone (mostly) dairy free and am now trying to go gluten free too (in an attempt to clear up my rosacea), and up my raw intake, so I know the TM is the perfect accompaniment on this journey.

I bought mine in November 2009, also sight unseen, from a Canadian distributor because they are not sold in the U.S. - at least there are no authorized dealers here.

I had heard about it from a friend who knows I collect odd kitchen appliances - mostly vintage but some new, if they are unique and interesting to me.
I saw it in operation on a couple of Food channel shows and on a PBS food show.
There were a couple of topics on the eGullet forum about it  "Thermomix Collection" (http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?/topic/125907-thermomix-collection/page__st__90)  which was the tipping point for me, after I looked at a bunch of YouTube videos and read some online articles.

I'm an omnivore.  I don't use my TMX as much as most on this forum but it has become a most important tool in my kitchen.

I've had mine since mid-2008 (I think, not really sure) and had heard about it some months earlier.  As soon as I heard what sort of machine it was I knew I'd want one, so resisted the urge to actually view it myself for some time as I had only just bought myself a new KitchenAid.  Eventually I succumbed to the lure of the TM and had a demo - the rest is history!

Sorry shanmac  ;D. But it's hard to shake the bug once you find out about how brilliant the TM's are. Even if it takes a couple of years to actually get one, once you show interest in getting a TM then eventually I thing you just got to have one.
And once you have a TM then you can't live without them.

What a great thread. I love hearing what persuaded people to buy.

I first saw a TMX on Masterchef last year when George briefly used it during a Masterclass. It was just a quick few seconds and he kept moving along with whatever the next recipe step was over at the bench.

I didn't think anything more of it until last November when I had breakfast with a few fellow teachers at our kids' club. One of them mentioned that she was very excited that she was getting a TMX for Christmas. I wondered what this thing was, so went home and explored the internet for information. I found out there was going to be a B2B class on in Sydney in January, a couple of hours' drive from us, so DH & I made a night of it, and were impressed by what we saw. I knew I'd like one, but thought it'd be a few months before I thought seriously about it. Especially since we'd just had to replace the washing machine.

My name was passed on to a local consultant who rang a couple of days later. I told her that I'd be interested down the track, so she sent me an email with her details for when I was ready. I then became obsessed about it, and started to spend every spare moment on the net, watching videos, reading blogs, this forum, anything. Even to the point where if I couldn't sleep at night, I'd lie in bed surfing the net about the TMX on my phone. I eventually emailed the consultant to say I'd like to have another look and was she doing a demo anywhere. She gave me details but forgot to tell the host that I might come along. Consequently I got some very blank looks when I turned up with DH and the MIL in tow! The party was so noisy and chaotic with kids running everywhere and people chatting non-stop that my MIL turned her hearing aid off. However, I was totally sold. I'd been wanting to wean one DS off so much ice cream that was costing me a fortune, and realised this was it, not to mention all the other health benefits. I nagged at my DH for two days about how I wanted to get one. The final clincher was that for the month they were offering two Thermoservers instead of one with any purchase, and I knew I would use two.

DH said that if I bought it now, I'd have to pay the savings account back. So I got it at the beginning of March, invested some money with a stockbroker and began writing monthly options on those shares (I'd been meaning to do this for awhile - it just gave me the boost to get around to it). The option income means I've now repaid the savings account. Might have to use the same principle to get my second bowl ...
