Title: Hello from Sydney, contemplating a TMX..
Post by: freshfoodfan on January 13, 2012, 08:25:08 am
Hi, I don't yet have a Thermomix but have read lots about them and spoken to a few people who have them - their views are very positive!!

I've never seen one in action but am going to my first demo on Monday which I'm looking forward to  :)  Haven't yet made up my mind, it's a lot to spend, but if they're as good as most people think I might place an order on the day. From what I can see those who own them and have negative things to say (online) haven't taken the time to use a forum like this and ask questions, check out recipes etc.  I joined up so I can do this and make the most of the machine, if I order it, or even if I need more time after Monday to ask questions & contemplate  :) :)

Cheers!

Hello freshfoodfan, welcome to the forum.  Good idea to check things out here, go to a demo and then make up your mind.  You will be impressed, no doubt about that.  A lot of negative comments come from people who, once they hear the price, start bagging it without knowing a thing about it. You will find a lot of happy little thermomix owners on here ;D

freshfoodfan, welcome to the forum. After your demo you will be amazed at what the thermomix can do. I have had mine for just over 12 months, and absolutely love it. I know it is expensive, but you will save money by making everything yourself so it eventually pays for itself.  When we weighed up buying all the appliances this machine replacces, it is definately more economic.

On this forum you will find alot of recipes and help.

Do abit of research if you can before Monday so you have alot of questions to ask your consultant when they arrive.

Let us know what you decide.

Good luck with your decision freshfoodfan. It is a lot of money, and I hesitated for a long time, wondering whether I would really use it and get my value out of it, or if it would sit on the bench unloved, like my food processor. I'm glad I bought the TMX. It does get lots of use. And this forum is a great place for recipes and guidance.

Thank you all, happy to be here :)

I'd actually decided a few weeks ago to buy my first food processor.. after researching them and figuring out exactly the one I wanted, I found the best deal online and was all set to order when a couple of people mentioned the TMX.  Intrigued, I looked it up and suddenly my decision became more complicated!  Although it doesn't slice, it does so many other good things that a processor can't.  Another forum mentioned the V-slicer - it seems that would be a good tool to have alongside the TMX.

Hi Freshfoodfan,

When I wnet to my first demo I knew that I wanted one. The price was daunting but when I worked out what I owuld spen on a good food processor and I needed a new bread machine ad I wanted a mix master or something similar. The price didn't seem so bad.

I have never regretted the purchase and my tow grown daughters each have one now too.  It is best to consider all of your options and decide what is going to be right for you and your family.

Hi freshfoodfan welcome to the forum, like you I was hesitant at first and wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be fad I grew tired of. I attended cooking classes, check the TMX website to see if there is one near you.  I also stalked this forum learning as much as I could, finally took the plunge and 8 months on still loving my TMX and use it daily!

Welcome freshfoodfan - your forum name alone suggests that you're the right perswon to own a Thermomix.  They're wonderful inventions.  Please report back to this thread after the demo.  Not long to wait now.  Make sure when you get to the custard that you volunteer to come up and experience the machine from a cook's perspective.  You will love it.  Enjooy!

Welcome freshfoodfan. I've had my machine for 4 years now and would buy another one immediatley when this one dies. (not too soon though I hope). This forum has been an enormous help when I was mastering the machine and now it is a wonderful source of recipes for me. I do hope you decide to purchase one as you won't be sorry.

Another thing to check out is Youtube. There are a heap of demos of the TMX there.

Oh, and welcome.

Thank you all!!

I love things like risotto, hollandaise and custard but have never tried to cook them myself as they seem too difficult - I'd be likely to muck them up. I quite enjoy cooking but am not very skilled at it, so usually end up making basic things for dinner when I come home from work.  It would be great to have more variety and from what I can see the TMX makes that much easier to achieve.  There are so many happy customers who use it often and are full of praise for what it can do, despite their initial doubts.

Hmmm it seems I've almost persuaded myself.. ;) but need to see it in action first.  Will let you know what I think after the demo!

FFF, have fun at the demo and don't feel you have to get it straight away. what you want to do is see the demo and have a think about it and see if you have a rapport with your consultant as well, because that will make your journey with the tm even more enjoyable.
it isn't difficult to tell that we love our tms, and you know this forum will support you.

Welcome to the forum FFF  :D it does seem as though you are almost committed  ;) If you are also after some variety then let me tell you between your TMX and this forum you will get all the variety you could ever wish for.

Before my TMX 41/2 years ago I could only cook meat and boiled veg - now I cook all manner of things for our family and some of them are really just because I can so easily  :o

Another thing you will like is the ease in which you can do it after work - put your feet up and let it cook for you.

Make sure you let us know what you decide  ;)

Welcome to the forum. Seems like a lot of us were hesitant at first and now are converts.
Check out the recipes and see if you can't do the same thing with the appliances you already have?

Well, the demo was good and although I didn't order a TMX I definitely want one and will probably order soon - I'd like to do so this month so as to receive the 2 x insulated bowls.

As for the food, I'd been really looking forward to the sorbet but the one they made wasn't as nice as I'd expected, partly because they used a lime - I usually love the flavour of lime but I thought it made the sorbet a bit too bitter/strong.  Others there seemed to like it though.  I was very surprised to find that I loved the parsley and lemon juice, almost didn't try it at all because I didn't expect to enjoy it.  Another thing I hadn't expected to like was the salad made with raw broccoli & onion.. it was fantastic and I can see myself making it in the mornings before work, to take in for lunch (my colleagues might not be so thrilled about raw onion breath in the afternoon!!).  Soooo much nicer than the ready-made salads available even from quality food outlets.

All good.. now just have to re-jig my budget a bit to make sure I can order one soon without stretching things too far.  The machine itself was very impressive; it looked high quality and extremely well-made.  Having read in various places about how noisy it can be, esp when mixing hard things like ice, it didn't make nearly as much noise as I'd thought.  The noise also lasted only a short time, until the hard ingredients had been blended.  A lot of people there already had TMXs, and those I spoke to were using theirs all the time - including one woman who said she'd hated cooking & had not been able to identify basic herbs like parsley before buying hers!

I'm persuaded  :D :D

Glad you made your decision. I think all of us haven't looked back since getting our thermies. Although the quality and repertoire  of our cooking has improved astronomically, like anything in the kitchen there are successes and failures. I know I wasn't overly impressed with the lemon sorbet  at my first demo !  I'm sure you'll never look back when you finally get one though. I have so many appliances that I  sold or gave away after I bought my Thermomix as I never use them anymore.

I've always really enjoyed cooking and felt myself fairly good at it.  Since getting the TMX tho' - over a year ago - my cooking confidence has soared.  I'm now making most of the family's bread, shortcrust pastry is a doddle, puff pastry isn't so difficult either.  I've made mayonnaise, custard, risotto, the list is probably almost endless.  I make our own stock pastes so there's none of the horrible additives in them.  Cakes and biscuits for the children are almost too easy.

There are so many recipes around on this forum that its easy to try new dishes.

I'm glad you enjoyed your demo today.  As everyone else has said - you won't look back.

Nik x

I hope so too!!  I feel a bit daunted.. had some last minute nerves, wondering if it was really worth the $$$ but I guess I'm about to find out  :D  I'm pretty sure it will be though, hardly anyone has a bad word to say about it.

I know I felt the same when I brought mine, so many $$$ to gather dust if we loose interest. But don't panic about that. Just remember to always leave your TM on the bench and don't be scared to use it. I definitely don't regret buying mine as everyone else on the forum will tell you. To me my TM is worth tens of thousands of dollars. I just wish I had brought one sooner.

if you have any doubts or a spare moment, make something basic like Baking Powder, SR flour, stock, a sauce/jam, coconut/almond/rice milk, or butter (just a couple of suggestions cos I could go on and on)

That's a simple one without making too much at a time Uni. Wonder why there is no 'flour' component though?

I wonder ... is the flour used more as a free flowing agent (I could be dead wrong lol) SA's only totals 3/4 teaspoon to replace 1 teaspoon and I would think if the flour had any other factor she would include it!  ???

Thanks for your replies re baking powder.  I never use self-raising flour as different things require different amounts of raising agent. so is useful to know how to make my own.

I've made the baking powder and the amount made just fitted my previous 250g cylinder container that I had. Make the Rice Flour from the EDC and then you can make the Baking Powder, and its very easy.

Congrats - enjoy your TM! I've only had mine 2 months and the best tip I got from my consultant was to work my way through the recipes in the EDC book. I haven't done that yet but I'm working on it - recipes that I had never thought of trying have often turned out to be fantastic. The review posts on this forum are great at tweaking the recipes or offering alternative ingredients. Have fun - I am!

What did you make first FFF :)
Title: Re: Hello from Sydney, contemplating a TMX..
Post by: freshfoodfan on January 28, 2012, 12:52:10 pm
Hi Cornish Cream, I made Bron's veggie stock concentrate first because someone commented it was nicer than the version in the EDC (it sounded nicer too!).  A bit scary using speed 10 and then temp 100 for the first dish, but it seemed to have worked well.  I haven't used the stock in anything yet because it was a hot day here so risotto or soup etc didn't appeal, but it'll be great to have it on hand.

Then I made chocolate custard which was amazing, although I think next time I'll use more cocoa - or maybe real chocolate instead.  And then hommus, which tastes very strong & garlicky (I used huge cloves of garlic!) but from having made aioli in the past I expect the garlic taste to mellow after a day or so into something delicious.

I would have made the lemon & parsley drink too except my freezer is taking forever to freeze me some ice cubes.. it's a frost free one which is generally brilliant, but I can't store ice in there and need to make it up fresh when I need it.. I'm wondering if a sealable plastic lunchbox or something would allow the ice to stay frozen - does anyone else have this problem??

All up I am completely thrilled with my machine and already wondering how I've managed to live without it.  I can see now how much it's going to change things - it's so unbelievably quick and easy to make tasty, healthy food.  Although I read LOTS about it online and saw a demo before ordering, it was really not until I used it myself that I understood just how clever and versatile it is.  And I haven't even used the butterfly, basket or varoma!!!  I have no children and am generally just cooking for one, but it's still so very worth the saving in time and effort to prepare food which tastes great.

Any lingering doubts have completely vanished and I'm over the moon to have such a great new tool.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Unreal. I'm now drinking the delicious lemon/parsley juice and have the quality problem of 'too much great food' in my fridge!!  I really shouldn't make anything more now until I've eaten or shared some of it ;-)  Haven't tried bread yet as my local supermarket only had bakers' flour in 5kg bags which seemed way too much.  I'll do the broccoli salad tomorrow morning to take to work for lunch.

Thank you all for your support & encouragement - it's great to be in contact with people who understand, and share, my enthusiasm.  I look forward to learning lots more from this forum and hopefully contributing too.  :D :D
