Diet / Re: Guacamole with peas

Great idea Vivaroo...veggie dips are always delicious. I've made straight pea dip & carrot, beetroot mainly inspired by the Healthy Food Guide magazine, but changing the guacamole like this is even better. Trouble is the dipping snacks. Sometimes, carrot, ca[sicum & celery sticks just don't cut it, & it's easy to overindulge in even low calorie chips & crackers.
Wondering how you're going with your son's diet..my 22 yo is over-weight too & probably for the same reason. He studies computer programming so sits a lot & I think lack of movement is a major problem as well as the constant small snacks..even healthy ones. He doesn't live at home now but he hasn't improved since he moved out.
My kids do love good food though & do cook pretty well(& healthy).  I'm hoping that one day they'll use their skills for good(not evil ;D).
By the way, I'm not doing very well with my own weight loss program..still trying. :P

Special Diets / Re: Ghee

Tried to make ghee this evening using the F & E  Indian Cooking book but like Debetha & versaceyoyo found that the butter didn't boil at the porposed 60 deg so amped it up to 100 for 5 min & it still didn't look right. I then put it in the microwave full power for 1 min & it worked! I gues the TM isn't perfect afterall!! nOMG! Anyway..it may not have worked if I hadn't started it in the TM. Will have another go later! Love Indian cooking!  :D

Wow Vivaroo...just what I needed after 2 months of overindulgence. You're totally sensible of course, & we should all try to live this way all the time.I'm going to try to give it a go as my "balance days" at least! Thanks for the great advice & of course the link to the great dressings. I've seen Healthy Girl's website before. She has a very diffeernt perspective for me. but the food looks delicious if a little American in some ingredients. We can improvise easily these days in Australia!

Wow..I'm always surprised by the creativity on this forum! You lot are so inventive....and helpful, thanks.  :) Beetroot carpaccio....sounds fantastic as does the grated beetroot under the rissoles. Am about to make the jam! Always busy!!

Hey Judydawn. I've now made the beetroot chocolate cake &  the dip. I thought they were both great but my hubbie was perplexed by the cake! "Why?" he said. He's not huge on beetroot though. My kids like both. Made an ice cream sandwich with the leftover cake.It was huge! Am now going to try the relish & maybe the jam so I can give some away.
I think I won't grow it again..not popular enough, though I did make spinach pie with the (slightly pink) greens very successfully. All like that one.

Jams and Chutneys / Re: Thermomix Beetroot Relish
« on: October 17, 2011, 01:25:52 am »
I bought fresh horseradish a few years ago(in Sydney) & was nearly asphyxiated when I grated it(way before TM)! My eyes & nose took a couple of hours to recover...fabulous stuff though! I love it. We don't see it very often here! Goes so well with beetroot. Have bottled stuff which works well too. The cream goes well but is much milder. I'm about to try this recipe as I have a "plethora" of beetroot. Thanks Thermomixer...Love this forum.

Thanks Judydawn. I've been following your posts for some time & really respect your advice. I've used some of your recommendations before & will certainly try some of these. I actually found a beetroot, cashew dip through your recommendation to check out Cream Puff's list. Will try that & as I have a fresh coconut in the fridge, the beetroot curry too! I might make a relish too..I do like relishes. Will let you know how they went. Cheers

Introduce Yourself / Beetroot recipes.
« on: October 11, 2011, 09:28:53 am »
Hi everyone. I've been reading your comments & advice for a couple of months now & finally decided to get involved myself! I've been experimenting with my TM for a few months now with mostlly great results & am certainly having lots of fun. My only problem is that I live in an open plan apartment & the noise TM & I make can be very intrusive on the rest of the family. They do like the results of experiments though.
My request today is for any interesting beetroot recipes. I have recently harvested a heap & have so far made tzatziki, salad & soup but am interested to see if any of you wonderful cooks have a new angle. My family aren't in love with beetroot so I'm looking for new ideas. I think I might not grow them again for a while...they are beautiful, & I've been cooking the tops in pies & sauces too but I don't have a big freezer!
I think I once saw a beetroot chocolate cake recipe which sounds a little extreme though probably delicious!
Any comments are welcome..
Lizzie
