Chit Chat / Re: What's for Dinner Tonight?
« on: November 14, 2011, 08:10:36 am »
Making bolognaise tonight (with my favourite 'spicy peppers' jar of pasta sauce, red wine and home grown herbs) and have my first real quiche (with homemade shortcrust pastry) in the oven for tomorrow's lunch, might make a quick mix banana bread or cake tonight as I have 2 bananas that are ready to go!

Thanks for that, I will give that a go next time!

Hiya, I've noticed some recipes say to drop food (eg garlic, apple etc) onto running blades... I place it in the bowl and then process it. What does dropping on blades do? Is it to prevent it getting caught under the blades? Just wondering how important this step is... Thanks

I do it in the thermomix as I like it fairly fine. I process whole nuts (macadamia and almonds) with the oats first for a couple seconds and put aside, then i process undiced dried fruits like peaches and pear halves, and then I add the dry mix back and stir it all through using reverse, with some cinnamon, seeds and shredded coconut.

No worries  ;D
I agree that its nicer if it has a bit of texture to it otherwise its too smooth - like a savoury cake. Did you hand chop your bacon? I would like to put it in the thermie, was thinking of throwing it in with the veggies next time and just doing a slower speed like you suggest so there are more 'bits' in there.

Hi all.
Loving the forum, thanks for all the great recipe ideas.

I just have a query on this recipe:

Quote
Method:-
Insert the butterfly whisk.
Cream the butter and sugar - whisk at speed 4 until creamy (approx 1 min), stopping once or twice to scrape down sides of TM with spatula.

Does the butter have to be softened first, or chopped up quite small? Or will the butterfly power through it regardless?  I've only used the butterfly a couple of times so far for soft things and don't know how strong it is...

Many thanks in advance

Thanks for the conversion of this recipe.  The ingredients are the same as one I have been making for years also, except i use about half the cheese.  I processed 2 garlic cloves first and added some chili powder also. I hand chopped the bacon and added at the end as I like to see the bigger chunks of bacon, my first attempt the bacon disappeared into it (although it still tasted nice) - I haven't mastered the times and speeds yet so maybe I'll work out how to incorporate the bacon so it can be chopped rougher.

This is a great dish to have as a standby in the fridge to just grab when you need a snack. You can cut it up in tiny squares or lunch sized ones. Also a goodie to take to friend's places when you have to take a plate of something.  Another good variation is to swap half zucchini with sweet potato and then add about a tspn of cumun. In fact any vegies are great for this one, even broccoli. I also added a leftover half carrot to mine today with lots of black pepper too.  Sometimes I add sliced tomato just before popping it into the oven. A great versatile recipe!

Made this for lunch today, super yummy. And super easy!
I didn't have cream or evaporated milk, so just used normal milk + water + 2tspn cornflour + small knob of butter and the result was very creamy and didn't look or taste low fat.  I threw in a half chopped zucchini but mushrooms would have been nicer and I added a heap of black pepper too as I love that so much.
Thanks for the recipe.

Thanks for all the tips re the gadgets... I'm looking forward to my spring clean but don't have many things really except a food processor that has heaps of attachments for blending and juicing etc (expensive kenwood one) that takes a whole shelf, some cheap beaters and cheapish kitchen scales. I reckon I'll clear out the lot. I used to have a dehydrator but gave it away!

This forum has so many exciting recipes, I'm loving my new hobby!!!!

Main Dishes / Re: Honey & Soy Chicken

This recipe was a HUGE success for me and it's a definite 'keeper' - thanks rainbow.

I also used 2 cloves of garlic and normal tablespoon of cornflour - but halved the soy sauce, water and honey to reduce the amount of sauce (kept all of the other seasonings the same), I only had a standard woollies type tray of chicken (about 500grams) - these quantities were perfect for 2 of us with some leftovers (we will fight over who will get this for lunch tomorrow) ... I kept the same cooking time - and it turned out perfect, the chicken was tender and there was still more than enough sauce for the rice and vegies. Oh and I sprinkled with a few crushed peanuts as I didn't have any sesame seeds...

Hi all, and thanks for the warm welcome.

This is a really active friendly forum and Judy, you are right that the recipes that are posted are well documented and seem easy to follow. Tonight I made the honey soy chicken by rainbow: http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=6371.0 after wondering what I was going to make ... I had some thigh fillets not sure what to do with... did a search on the forums and found that great recipe with all the ingredients I had at home. I will post my photo there shortly.

fundj, yes I meant the book that came with the TMX, the Every Day Cooking book. I am finding it very good also and the only thing that didn't turn out so far was the porridge (too watery for me), but I just increase the cooking time and it works every time now. I'm pretty keen on trying the chocolate/almond type cake too. Infact I can't wait to try so many things is too exciting!

Cookie1, I know Lee Point Caravan Park and that area quite well, looks like you cleared out just in time as the build-up in our humidity is striking full force now and not so comfy for the tourists, its very very hot. Wow you took your Thermomix travelling! I imagine it must be perfect for a caravan or motor home.

One thing I am interested to know is how many people got rid of some of their other appliances (eg food processor, juicer etc). I am thinking I probably won't need these any more and am eye-ing off my newfound potential cupboard space...
