Italian Arborio Rice - what brand?
« on: September 21, 2009, 11:18:18 am »
Hi
I have  been trying to find Italian arborio rice as recommended in the EDC.  At Woolies I can only see Sunrice brand but I swang by a Coles today and they had Riverina (?) brand which said it was from imported rice, but not from where.
So any suggestions as to where I can get some from?  I guess a deli wouldn't be a bad start.
TIA
Narelle

and anyone know a good source for bulk arboria italian or not? I can only find 1-1.5kg in the supermarkets so far and I'm hoping I can source it cheaper in bulk

Personally....I would say if you are having trouble getting your hands on some Italian (rice that is), just grab whatever Arborio! The brand I use is in a box, with navy blue on it, and is called Riso "Principe". Down at the continental deli they have lots of brands -- but I wouldn't think there would be too much difference as long as it was specifically arborio. The italians seem to be very good at just using whatever is on hand.  ;)

I buy some from a import type of shop, I have much better results with it than with supermarket arborio rice....the grain seems longer and the risotto less gluggy with still a bit of bite to it.;  I think anything that has italian on the packet!

Narelle - get in touch with Fiona H.  Vialone nano and carnaroli http://www.aoap.com.au/Content_Common/pr-Grains-Pulses_Ferron-Carnaroli-Rice.seo are good varities, the Australian arborio is going to provide a good result, but the Italian is better.  Like wines and chocolate - the best is for impressing friends or special meals for yourself.

It will be hard to find Italian arborio varieties in bulk here - possibly Aussie arborio from rice millers ?
