I'd prefer if the review was based on the easy vs tm31, and another one gastro v tm31, to get a clear case of what each one does for the price point.

Loving the new one on the horizon, capable of -24 - +190 degree's! at 4k, I may be dreaming.

May. lol!

I think the motor of the TM outwins them all. Being that it's a reluctance motor and has no moving parts, using less wattage makes it the winner.

I have absolutely no allegiance to the TM. If there is a better machine out there, I'll get it. I love this way of cooking and there is no way I am going back to the old way if I can possibly help it. I saw the Hotmix a while ago on the web, the only thing that turned me off a the time was the inbuilt recipes and the fact that what I was watching was in another language, but I can see that inbuilt recipes would be a positive. If you were to go away and take your machine with you, there are inbuilt recipes if you need them and also everyday cooking you don't have to refer to a book rather go by a chefs recipe. I can see the next couple of years there is going to be some stiff competition for the TM, and they may have to lift their game --- bring it on! Yes, there has been some good sales figures but the competition has caught on, and like all good ideas such as the telephone and light globe, you come to accept that you can shop around for a better deal.

An interesting read, wonder what part 3 will encourage????

Have no problem with other machines, and other people preferring other machines.  Just not too sure about this lady's comparison.  A little biased towards the HMPG, especially with her mention of the Varoma.  Why, when you are spending sooo much money on a machine, would you still want to use the microwave or stove top to steam?

I must admit, I was dumbfounded by her description of there being "a lot to take off to get the blades out to clean the bowl" in reference to the TMX, and going on to say that you just have to unscrew the bolt from the bottom of the blades to get them off the HMPG - mmmmmm, twist a base or unscrew a bolt?????

Just my opinions, take with a grain of salt!

I thought the same with taking out the blades. I didn't think it could get any easier than the TM. Also where she mentioned about the dials and buttons on the TM being confusing, I think the TM is so easy to set, only takes 2 seconds. (but I have had mine for quiet awhile now and it's second nature)
But saying that I am happy there is some competition out there, might bring the price down (eventually) for the TM or some changes to keep up with the competition.
I do love my TM though :)

I have not heard of this new machine.

I am all for competition too, anything to bring the price down of the TM or to get some added benefits.

At this stage I woudnt look at another machine at these prices, love my TM & have a load of TM recipe books.

Its going to take me a long time to get through all the recipes I want to try in the TM.

H :)

I too will watch this with interest. I feel the same as CP and though I LOVE my TM  I will use the best method to cook whatever it is I'm cooking that day.

I've always had a problem with how the TM sautees onions, I can never get them cooked enough to get rid of the 'uncooked' taste in some recipes. Doesn't happen in all but anyone familiar with me will know that I tend to do the onions in a frypan and will then add to the bowl and carry on with the recipe. If another machine can have a higher heat and not burn (like the Bellini) then that would be a big plus for me. Saying that though I can't see me shelling out $4000 right now for another machine and yes I would get the more expensive one as I'd hate to get the cheaper one and then regret it.

If the time came where I would need to replace my machine it's good to know that there are starting to be more options out there and by that time the true worth of these new machines will be evident.

Must say I too was a little surprised about the comparison with the bases and how the HMP was easier, it certainly didn't sound so to me  ???

Hello Again, In regards to you comments regarding the Varoms, as the HMP is a commercial machine most kitchens have a Combi Steamer check out this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combi_steamer )  to do the steaming making the Varoma useless as it is too small for most commercial applications, but perfect for the domestic market.

In relation to the blade removal, it is a matter of preference, both systems atre simple but I feel that removing the nut is a simpler system with less chance of breaking the base that the blades clip into with the TMX

??? Do you mean the old style of blade?
Title: Re: Thermomix vs Hotmixpro (gastro)
Post by: Tenina on April 10, 2012, 02:35:29 am
The blade in HotMix is easy to remove, has a sort of screw bolt which comes off completely. The blade slots into the base of the bowl much the same as in Thermomix apart from the bolt thingy! (To use a technical term!)

I really hate the name, as I've mentioned on that review.
Hot Mix is what they put on roads.  ;D

I think this new more expensive machine(the gastro, or whatever it's called) may be excellent for professional kitchens. But, for home use or small cafe's etc, I'd still go with the Thermomix.

Is the HMP sold using the Direct Selling method? I think that's a big plus for Thermomix, in that consultants (well, good consultants) are there for you after purchase. I also love the fact that so many recipe books are appearing for the Thermomix.

That said, I'd like to see a HMP in action.

I love my TMX. But when it dies (not for a very long time I hope) I would love to have other machines to look at before I replaced it. I love this way of cooking. It seems so quick and with little washing up.

I'll look forward to Tenina's comments.

Wow I am all for competition in the marketplace and the HotmixPro seems as though it is closer to the TMX than other machines - can only be good for those in the market for the best way of cooking. I agree that HO will need to lift their game  :)  :)

I've had a look at the hotmix pro site and they have some interesting recipes to try.  The stats say that the motor is more powerful however one recipe for a marinade mentions 30 gr each of leek, onion and 10gr ginger on speed 10 for a minute. My thermie completely annihilates onion at speed 4 after 7 seconds so I'm not sure what I'd be left at.

I love my thermie (Pierre  :)) I just wish he'd cook onions properly although my demonstrator who has returned  :) mentioned that she always uses red onions and doesn't have the raw onion problem, as I don't generally cook with red onion I'm planning on using Pierre to chop the onion and I'll caremailise them on the steve as always and then add them back in.

Hi Buttercups. One of the things I love most about my TMX is that it cuts and sautes my onions for me. How long do you let them cook for? I always give mine a blitz, then scrape down the sides, add oil and then cook 100 degrees, 3 mins, sp 1, leaving the MC off. I'm usually fairly happy with them. ALthough I've seen other recipes that do it for as little as 2 mins up to 4 mins.

I think we all have our own way of cooking our onions ... I cook mine for 5 mins, varoma temp, speed 1 and MC out  ;)

Whoever sponsored her to write this review was smart.

I'd really prefer it if people would write reviews and be honest about their bias rather than pretending to be non bias but actually are. I like reading bias reports. If everyone wrote bias reports we'd truthfully know the pluses of all the products!

Things I'd want to know: Visable thermostat? I hate digital controlsI had this on a previous machine and it was a pain in the butt!

The higher temperature is probably the only selling feature for me. And it's ugggggly! Lol.

I'm not TMX loyal either but it needs to be better than that to sell my TMX and fork out even more money.

Just been looking at the recipes on the HotMixPro website.  The desserts mainly.
Some strange ingredients and very poor method explanation in badly translated English
I hope that the machine comes with a recipe book that is a bit easier to understand than the web-site.

My dear Mrs. Nesbit, gruff?? Not at all. I was  annoyed with myself for maybe missing something. Vent away. Join the club. Venting is good. We love to vent here. We love a soapbox. Ah shucks maybe that is just me and thee and a few others. In any case feel free to tell is like you see it. Open a discussion. Let's talk about stuff and get educated.  Lef's share ideas . No stupid questions and no wrong answers  here.

Everyone is allowed an opinion here and no one gets narky.  Obviously we all ove our Thermomix but there are others here with the Bellini and ThermoChef and we want to also know about other machines and how they compare.  I am dying to know how they all work .

Sorry if you  thought that I thought you were Gruff. Goodness I hardly know you. In any case only billy goats are gruff  and I hardly think you are a billy goat.

SO FAR: loving several features of Hot Mix Pro (or hereafter HMP) and really excited to keep using it…had a fail today, but first one, and I think I have sourced the reason…human error, which human??? That would be moi…

I think we are on to something exciting here….though there are features on TMX that I love that are missing from HMP….stay tuned!
I will do a proper comparison as soon as I can catch my breath…seriously crazy busy!

The other thing that you need to be aware of when comparing all of these new machines is that some warranties only cover domestic usage and are voided if used in a retail/commercial environment.    I know that according to the terms of the Thermochef warranty, it is only covered for domestic usage, my Kenwood is also warranted for normal domestic use.  I can't find my Thermomix paperwork at the moment to check what it states.  I'm assuming that since the Hotmix is marketed towards a commercial environment, that they would be warranted accordingly.

We often have customers who query why they should purchase a commercial microwave, grill, toaster, milkshake mixer etc etc instead of a cheaper domestic one.....we then have to explain that 1. they are not designed to operate for the amount of time required in even a quiet takeaway and 2. should the manufacturer find out that it has been used in a commercial environment the warranty will be voided.  It is the same with the crockery and cutlery we sell, it is designed to stand up to the wear and tear of constant usage.  We have customers who purchase cheap crockery from Big W and then wonder why the pattern has vanished or faded after going through a commercial dishwasher a few times...it is not designed for that usage.

Cheap and cheerful is good if you don't need to rely on it and it is not part of business....if you absolutely have to have it working then getting the right equipment with the correct warranty is worth (almost) any price.

(I'm not sure if anyone here is using these machines to produce food product in a restaurant or shop, but I thought it might be worth pointing out that warranty needs to be considered as part of the cost of a item)

There were so many inaccuracies regarding the TM31 that I stopped reading and didn't believe that she was an independent reviewer.

HotMixPro, you mentioned that the Gastro is $2500. I thought I read that it was $4000.

The Varoma does it for me with the TMX. So much more versatile and I can cook a whole meal. I don't want to cook any higher than 114 anyway. I don't make things like liquid caramel and honeycomb, so I don't see the purpose.

without going back reading through all the posts, there are 2x HMP. One is more suitable for the domestic market (ie. the cheaper one $2500) and the Gastro one (I think) is aimed more towards the professional chef/restaurateur

Thank you HotmixPro. Best always get get the correct info from the horses mouth. Not that I  think you are a horse.

If ever I have to get my Thermomix repaired I doubt HO would be pleased to get MY machine. Might never get it back or it might be bugged. LOL! In that case I  would be looking seriously at either of your machines even though I love my Thermomix.

We are all looking forward to Tenina's reviews as she is trustworthy  to give an honest opinion.

I'd really love to get another jug for my Thermomix (even tho I do have the two for the Thermochef)...I can't tell you the number of times I have all three jugs drying in the sink.  I just can't bring myself at the moment to give more money to HQ.  I was hoping to pick up a second jug when I was in Munich a couple of weeks ago but unfortunately we didn't get to the shop.  It fascinates me that they are now opening Vorwerk stores in Germany, but we still have to deal with only one dealer in Australia.  It is really good to see that the market is opening up with more options in machines for people here and that some appear to be true competitors.  Unfortunately I'm down one machine as of last night when my Kenwood stopped cooking....it now has to go into hospital for the second time in three months :(.

After all the bullying of consultants HO are doing, and the way they are treating Tenina, I would not be buying another TMX. I do feel for the consultants though, this is their job and it is being jeapardised by the childish behaviour of HO. I love knowing that I am supporting a local, but will not tolerate giving HO my hard earned $$$$.
Title: Re: Thermomix vs Hotmixpro (gastro)

There are more than a few of us who feel that way. I Imagine all the nay sayers  to TMX are having a good laugh. Those who desire one are probably looking at alternatives rather  than do  business  with HO.

What a shame stacelee. Could you get a friend to buy another jug in Germany and send it? I hope the doctor fixes your  Kenwood.

Nothing will change anyone's behaviour in any way  unless  a few speak up for others who are unable to do so. That is why bullies are so successful. They live to put fear into others. Nasty business bullying.

Post by: Merrilyn on May 09, 2012, 11:28:49 am
Well, DH picked up my Hotmix Pro this afternoon.

First impression out of the box, good looking machine.  Not ultra stylish, but neat and business like.  Very well packed.  I think it would arrive safely no matter how rough the delivery people were.  I ordered the EASY, not because of the price, but simply because I thought I would never use the inbuilt recipes, as I have my iPad set up with my recipes and I'm used to using that.  I also don't make confectionery, so a temperature of 130 is fine for the cooking I do.

Hmmm what to make.  It's 5.30 and we usually eat at 6 so it has to be something simple.  Decide on some braised steak and onions and steamed vegetables.  Even after a brief read of the instruction book, I felt comfortable with the controls.  The screen guides you through, and it's pretty idiot proof. You just need to remember the sequence temp, speed, time.  I've written myself a little post-it note for the moment till it becomes second nature.

First impression on cooking - wow, this baby is quiet.

Cooked the onions in a bit of oil on 130 for 5 minutes and set aside.  Added the diced beef and a little oil at 130 and after 5 minutes on speed 2 the meat had a nice colour.  Put it all together with some beef stock and set the timer for 30 minutes speed 1 temp 110.

Hotmix Pro does not come with a varoma, but the steamer part of my saucepan set fits perfectly on the lid, so in go the vegetables.  Not sure if you're supposed to set it up that way, but hey, it works, and everything was beautifully cooked.  At the end of cooking, HMP beeped for 30 seconds and turned itself off.

Thirty minutes later we are sitting down to a delicious meal.

Things I really like:-

The lid.  Love the way the lid can be lifted up to add ingredients without taking it off completely. And it's easy to fit.  A simple click - lock.  And the measuring cup locks into place, so it doesn't fall out when the lid is lifted.

The noise - it's certainly quieter than thermie.  We were able to watch television quite comfortably with HMP cooking away on speed 2  On speed 10 it's probably the same as Thermie but maybe at a lower pitch so it doesn't appear to be as loud.

Turning off the blades.  I started the cooking using the blades on 1 but 15 minutes into cooking, turned them off completely.  The meat stayed in nice chunks.  I could have probably used either of the two super slow speeds, but wanted to see how it worked if I turned the blades off completely. No sticking!

Steamer insert.  Although not supplied with the machine, the steamer insert is stainless steel with a wire handle.  I think the price was around $78 plus GST, money well spent.

Things I miss :-

The Varoma.  I really like steaming my veggies, but using the top of my steamer saucepan set worked really well so it's easy to get around.

That's about it for now.  I haven't really had time to have a thorough test, but so far, I'm delighted with my purchase.

I'll give you further updates as I get into more complicated cooking.

Forgot to mention the cost.  I paid $2156 for the HMP and the additional stainless steel steamer basket (including GST).  I was fortunate enough to get my order in during the promotion and received a free additional bowl and blades set.  Love having two bowls to work with  ;)

I so liike being able to  turn the blades OFF with not sticking so meat still in chunks. Also the higher temp being able to brown. We are going to need a diary on this. LOL!

AND THE QUIET. I sometimes have to move mine into the laundry because I can't stand the NOISE!

Its not really a recipes just some onions, carrots and some celery and the  quantities i make would not fit in it, 1kg mince and a tin (3kg) of tomatoes, and i cook it for 3 to 4 hours. Have u made bol sauce in the TM before, did u like it ?  u should make one of ur recipes in the HOTMIX and  see which u like the best.

Hi Merrilyn, am glad that you are happy with the HMP Easy. Are you aware that you do not need to set the time. The EASY can cook to temperature. For example if you are making a custard, and set say 82°C, then the HMP will switch off at 82°C. No need to set the time......

But or course you can cook to time as well,

Enjoy! :) :) :) :)

It has a pulse action that will act like the knead function…

SO Much to do and so little time to come on here and tell you about it…but let me say, happy days….LOVE the quiet, LOVE the no stir function, LOVE the fact I can cook with out timing it and when it reaches temp it turns off….Miss the scale (but that is just cos I am so used to it, not a big deal) and would miss the Varoma if I didnt have a steam oven, (oh and that other thermomix that I still own!! hahaha with a Varoma of course!!) Love the precision of temperature as well…so far so good kids, promise there will be proper blog post soon discussing it…just frantic…frantic, frantic…Thai Thai again classes should be up tomorrow night…so hope WA books in! uni, i was more interested in the ratio of meat to tomatoes in your recipe, we use a much lower %. I'll need to try adding the minimum amount of liquid and then maybe use the browning function at the end if there is still to much liquid. I'll only do a smaller quantity to see how it turns out

I know you have to wait for the HotMix Pro Creative to be available in Australia, but to give you a rough guideline to the price, in the UK it is £4,692.00 ATM, which is about AU$ 7483.00  ??? although I suppose it depends on the import duties and taxes that you have there, plus I presume that they would be expensive to transport that distance.

:o no way i would ever spend that much, unless it did the washing up too  ;D

;D Uni.  I would love one but no way could I afford it.  If I were rich, I would have a professional kitchen in the house, with every gadget under the sun, with a separate kitchen for DH (makes too much mess), but that is just a dream ...  But it would be great if it could do the washing up AND clear up mess - that would be worth saving up for.  8)

Thought you might like to read an update on my new Hotmix Pro.  I've been cooking up a storm lately and his machine is certainly living up to my expectations.

Made jam, using the cook to temp setting (in this case 110 degrees) and then turn off.  Jam was perfect and no scum on top.

Made a spice mix.  Thirty seconds on  speed 8 and even the hardest grains were pulverised to a fine powder.

Made mushroom risotto using a thermomix recipe.  Excellent result.

Made a loaf of wholemeal bread.  Now this was interesting.  It was a pretty cold day, not ideal for proofing bread dough.  I usually sit my bread dough on the window sill in the sun.  No sun so I decided to try something different.  HMP has a controlled low setting, and as the heating element comes up to about a third of the side of the jug, I put the normal ingredients in, mixed it on "pulse" setting which is pretty much the same as "knead" on the TX and when it was finished, let it sit in the jug to proof at a temperature of 29 degrees with the blades turned off.  Forgot about it while I was doing housework, till I glanced at HMP to see the measuring cup sitting on top of a plume of bread dough slowly working it's way out through the hole in the lid.  Hmmmmm well that works  :D

Bread was very light with lots and lots of tiny holes (is that called a fine crumb) don't know the technical term, but you'll know what I mean.  So, yes, it makes a good loaf of bread and proofing in the bowl was a bonus.  You won't find that written in the instruction book.  I just made it up myself  ;D

I'm going to try some toffee next - just because I can - all for the grandchildren of course.  None for me  :-)

Merrilyn sounds like your having lots of fun with your new machine. Great to have some first hand info from a x-TM owner (I'm assuming you have passed the TM on to you DD) well done

Thanks Merrilyn for keeping us informed.  I for one am interested to see how it goes.  Would love to know how it sautees onions and whether it can do them as good as in a frypan. Please, if you do any, let me/us know.  :D

Also like how you can set for the jelling temp of jam and then have it turn off.  :)

I'm enjoying reading your review Merrilyn. It sounds as though it may give the TMX a run for it's money.

Julie, just tried sautéing some onions.  Five minutes on speed 1 and temp 110 and the onions were transparent and well cooked.

Cookie, It does a lot of things really well, as good as thermy so far, but I'm missing the scales and the varoma.  But I do love the extra heat (up to 130 degrees) and being able to turn off the blades so it can be used just like a saucepan.  I'm slowly getting used to using all the extra features, like the cook to temperature and then either stop or ask it to cook for a set time at that temp.  And on low  speeds, it's really quiet.

I have to say that it's the only machine I've seen that even comes close to thermie in quality but it does have extra features that thermie does not have.  Then again, thermie has a varoma and scales which HMP doesn't have.  I love my thermie, it really taught me how to cook, but if I was ever to buy another machine,  I'd buy another HMP.

JulieO, you want the onions browned/caramelized though don't you?  Merrilyn's onions in the Hotmix Pro sound the same as if they were cooked in our TMX for that length of time using varoma temp.

I want onions golden like in a frypan.  No amount of cooking on Varoma does this for me.  I can always detect a rawness in both smell and taste.  Thought the higher temp that the HMP can go to might counteract this.

Sounds like the HMP is going to give thermomix a alternative.

Sorry, I should have explained it a bit better.  The onions were beginning to brown on the edges at the 5 minute mark.  Had I let them go longer, or used a higher temp they would have been caramelised.  At the transparent/golden stage they were well cooked and no raw taste.

To thermomix owners, the HMP sounds like a great addition to the kitchen as opposed to a spare jug... Sounds like a fantastic machine. Might have to start putting $10 away a week.... Will take awhile, but oh how sweet that day would be!!!

Just came across the Welfarewisdom "review", part 1 seemed fine but part 2 left me quickly questioning it once she started talking in the review and comments below about the blade removal and then it went downhill from there really. Particularly the bit regarding the displays / visible information. I'd much rather have the TMX's all visible than a single blueish LCD.

Certainly the saucepan like ability is nice, the being able to cook in 1 degree increments _could_ be nice but I've never though oh it would be great if I could get 38 degrees rather than 37. (And I'd fret all the time about which exact temp I should be using for a dish) I was amused at the knocking the TMX for making caramel / nougat because you need to transfer the contents to another pan and yet going peh regarding the lack of Varoma and saying you could just use a pan to do that.

(That all said, I have no idea how I ended up on that review now ... Oh yes seeing HotmixPro in the about section of Tenina's website and wondering what the heck it was)

Reading this thread (as apparently I haven't anything else to do  ;D ), my to questions are:

What is HO doing to annoy everyone?
How were they treating Tenina?

(You can tell its been nearly a year since I've been active here)

Hi Rob,
well Ho don't like Tenina since she quit Ho. :'(

second she is promoting HMP, which She has the right to promote/ advertise what she believes in..

I also  have one on order, will get next week.

I am buying one, as I think I  will benefit from this machine, in conjuction with my thermomix.. Busy, working Mum, 5 days a week, cooking for Family and elderly parents..

I make lunches, dinners, bake ect all the time. We never have takeaway, or go out to a restaraunt, except for 1 week holiday a year.
It will help me..

I think HO Thermomix aust, are worried by HMP. :)

There is a Hotmix Pro Forum dedicated to the appliance which is probably the way to go if you want to find enthusiasts of the machine.

Some great laughs on this thread - miss you ladies!!

From what I've been reading pluses and minuses to both machines - if I could have two I'd def go with one of each! But as a busy home cook who loves the varoma and scales (to shorten my cooking time by a lot) and doesn't do much baking/sweet cooking then I'd go the tmx. Though the higher temps for cooking onions etc and turning off the blades are two big bonuses for the hmp.

Would love to hear more from those that have both as to what they think.
I read that original blog comparison but omg how biased was that.

Have a couple of friends looking to buy so would be good to point them to some unbiased info on both machines.

I also found the FoodMuster's review of HMP to be biased so I posted a comment on her site to request that she disclosed to the readers whether she was receiving any benefits, financial or otherwise, from HMP for publishing her review and thoughts on the subject. Interestingly, I note my comment was removed (or not published) and so no response provided.

I think if you are endorsing or promoting a product, you should be at least be open and honest about the fact you are being paid to do so.

MEP, I can assure you that there was no payment made to the Foodmuster blog, apart from some advertising space at the top of the page which was negligible
