Title: Vegan Food
Post by: Pam Moffat on September 09, 2009, 01:12:07 pm
Hi I am from Canberra have had my thermomix since May & I LOVE it.  My oldest daughter has been Vegan since May & if anyone has some good Vegan recipes I would really appreciate them.  All the family loves porridge & so I now make it with 50/50 rice milk & water & it's really good (a handfull of saltanas & a sprinkle of cinnamon before cooking is also really good)

Hi Pam, no vegan recipes here, though I too can highly recommend the vegetarian recipe book. Have made a few things out of it and love them. :D

The Vegetarian book has lots of lovely recipes and we're not vegans either.  We do have non meat meals but that is all I can get DH to agree to.

Hi Pam,

I'm from Canberra too! My thermomix arrives tomorrow and I will be sure to post some vegan recipes. Once I get to know the machine better, I will be able to convert some good vegan recipes.

I am a lactose-intolerant pescetarian, so I eat a lot of vegan meals.

I'll let you know when I convert my first vegan recipe...

:o Thanks everyone. No I don't have the veg cook book, I was going to get it through a friend when the thermo peoples were in Canberra but it didn't happen.  The consultant, from Sydney, who sold me my machine (but didn't give me a delivery demo-grrr) sent me a copy of a thermomix vegan cookbook.  It has some good recipes in it (but they do use honey in the book, but I have used dark brown sugar or golden syrup instead)I look forward to thermomixing with you all. (have to say I'm pretty hopeless with a computer & don't get how to do this blogging)

Cooking with Kurma is a great place to start. His recipes are simple and cheap to make. However, he does use cheese, so your daughter may need to find an alternative or just leave it out altogether. I bought the TV series on DVD and he is great fun to "cook with". He's not one of those TV chefs who think that speed is of the importance, in fact, watching him is really relaxing :D I bought the book to go with the series so that I could have the ingredients on hand before cooking and not have to press the pause button all the time at the beginning while I raced round the kitchen grabbing spice jars and other ingredients.

Another few fun books to own/borrow from the library are Veganimicon (purely vegan recipes), The Grits Cookbook (vegetarian and vegan - the vegan gravy is to-die-for) and Max and Rosie's cookbook (vegetarian and vegan).

Hope this information helps a bit.

P.S. Here's a link to The Grits recipe for their Golden Bowl:
http://www.bigoven.com/163272-The-Grit-Restaurant-Golden-Bowl-recipe.html
You'll find three recipes to make up the dish: the gravy (to which I often add sliced mushrooms), fried tofu (which my meat-loving husband adores) and some fried vegetables. I think your daughter would like this. It's fast to make and tastes brilliant. Before you start you'll need nutritional yeast for the gravy and fried tofu plus soya sauce. Just thinking about it makes me hungry. Think I'll pop off to the supermarket and make the dish tonight ;D

Have to agree - his recipes are so repeatable and his Tv/DVD manner makes you want to try - he is based in WA now but does classes in other states, including here in Melbounre a t Gopals - where it started.   he is very humble and not full on.  had lunch with him at a cooking show a few years back - what you see on TV is what you get  - charming

Wow, you had dinner with him?! You are so lucky to have met him. He seems such a nice, down to earth bloke.

You can get him to come around and cook - http://kurma.net/classes/yourplace.html (http://kurma.net/classes/yourplace.html).  Looks like he has moved from Perth?

Yeah, I'll send him a plane ticket to come over to Germany to cook with us ;D I bought the DVDs and the cookbook because I ate at a Hungarian Hare Krishna temple (there is Hare Krishna valley there) and I was so impressed with how good and "clean" it tasted. Or I'll just have to start saving for a plane ticket to Australia so I can attend one of Kurma's cookery classes...

Hi Pam, there's a new Raw Recipes section now, so hopefully there'll be lots of vegan recipes in there soon! I've just added one for raw pasta, and hope to add more soon.  :)

I borrowed a cook book from the library called 'The Modern Vegetarian'
http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Vegetarian-Kitchen-Peter-Berley/dp/0060392959 (http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Vegetarian-Kitchen-Peter-Berley/dp/0060392959)

It has such a great range of vegan food, and much of it can be easily converted to TM recipes. It has a whole section dedicated to making bread, cooking with tofu and tempeh, it has some really wonderful looking vegan cake recipes. Next week I am going to make vegan coconut pie, it uses coconut oil instead of butter in the pie base. I can't wait!

This cook book is No.1 on my list of 'to buy' cook books.
