Smelly Thermomix bowl and lid
« on: April 07, 2010, 08:47:27 am »
I have only had my TM31 for a week and a half and have enjoyed cooking many things in it. I have cooked Bolognese sauce a few times and have found that I can pretty well get the smell out of the bowl but not the lid. Any tips?

Have you tried using bicarb paste on the lid?  I don't tend to use vinegar cleaning the TMX but make a paste with a little water and smear over inside of lid and seal.  It has worked with curry here. :)

Do you leave the paste on the lid? And if so, for how long? I've tried soaking it in water and 1tspn of white vinegar overnight (also put it on one cycle in the dishwasher (naughty I know) and that didn't work.

can't find others, but putting lid in the freezer overnight is also supposed to help

I just don't worry about it anymore. Doesn't seem to affect the flavour of the next thing I cook or make , even butter.

I do leave the MC off when not in use.

I'm with Gretchen. I dry mine and store with the MC inside the basket and the lid sitting on top , not locked in - so it can dry and let air flow. Reduces smelling considerably.

I fill mine with some water (just to cover knives)
I put 1/2 lemon (with peel and everything)
I blend for several seconds speeding up from 1 to 10
I do the same also using Reverse
It smells very nice afterwards
I believe it is also healthy to use such a natural thing like lemon  ;)

Good work farfallina.  But lemons can be expensive if you don't have a tree  ;)

i find the best thing is fill it just over the blades with warm water, drop a bit of dishwashing liquid and 3 to 4 egg shells in (i always keep my emptied egg shells in a bowl as i use them fairly often) and close it all up and whiz it on high at least 8 or above for AT LEAST 1m30sec..anything less and the eggs wont do their job which is to nicely clean off any residue there might be on the lid and or bowl which creates the smell!!  that was the advice from my consultant and i havent had a problem since..she also told me never to leave the lid locked in and close it all up when not in use..let the air circulate a little and dont air lock the lid..hope it helps  :)

Thanks frozzie, learnt something.  I leave the MC off but I do lock the lid so must stop doing that when I get mine back.  It never smells though.

JD mine only gets a smell when i cook something like lasagne or bolognaise or garlic butter for garlic bread..its usually the onion and or the garlic that do it and only if i lock the lid because silly me forgot my brain and didnt leave it unlocked..other than that mine is pretty much odour free but whenever i do get a smell i do the egg and dishwashing liquid thing and that usually gets off any smell!  :)
