Interesting, how much profit do supermarkets make?
« on: August 20, 2012, 12:21:51 am »
W here in Perth is slashing all their lamb by 30%.

it is still cheaper for me to buy a whole lamb @ $9.95 per kg.

It makes you wonder how much profit they are making.

Yes Hally I saw that in the newspaper over the weekend.

Must be large profit margins if they can cut 30% off.

We love lamb so I guess we will be having even more of it. ;D

Hally, just look at the profits for WW and Westfarmers ( Coles). Massively huge.

Everything price point, display on front ends, clip strips along the isles are "Paid for" , and shelf space by the companies that produce the food.

Then they pay merchandisers / or reps to keep it tidy, bring it forward, make the shelves look tidy.
The bread companies have to bring fresh bread in 4 times a day and stack it.

All promotions are planned at least 6-9 months ahead.
I used to be a Merchandiser for many big companies in the grocery industry..  Lots of free staff, at no expense to the supermarket at all.

My Thermomix,  Kitchen Aid, Pizza oven, Nu Wave 5 in 1, Spatulas, all brings love, laughter, happiness, and great food  to my kitchen.

We work on an approx. average of a 50% mark up at our shop and just barely get by - we have huge overheads (although, no more nor no less than most other small specialist shops I am sure).

Many of our customers ask for "best price" (... would they go to their doctor or solicitor and ask for their "best price"?   I don't think so, so why do they treat us differently?) and I know that some businesses mark up their prices above the RRP so that they can offer the psychological hook of a discount, we don't do that.  I know some types of businesses have 300, 400 and 500% mark ups so they can afford huge discounts.  Eveyone thinks that because we are a shop we also have these sorts of mark up - I only wish that were true!

Sorry, I've got on my hobby horse here and hijacked the thread somewhat.  I'll try not to rant on again.

Your mark up is low 50%.

Makes you wonder, my butcher would still make a profit sellng me the lamb, so you wonder what price W are buying in at.

I'm here for the farmers..  well we have to be, with our shop.

Farmers get 45 cents for a litre of milk, WW sell for at  least   $1.60 for branded milk.

We constantly get asked for a better price, but then we have to chase to get paid.. for jobs done. :(

At least we don't have to chase many accounts up - because we work with the tools of their trade, they can't earn any money until they pick their things up and they have to pay before they get them back - hope that makes sense, another one of my very confusing sentences!

I'm here for the farmers too. They probably get 30c/kilo if they are lucky. The mark up is in between the farmer and the shop. Everyone gets there little cut. GO FARMERS .
