Oh wow, thats a great prize. I just couldn't think of anything but other than blitzing the meal I'd made for the family  :'(

I saw that. There is a great lack of baby and toddler recipes, unless sweet. A great prize too.

Can I send a recipe that I have converted?

As long as you're not a consultant, Tasty.  Read the terms and conditions.  I hope I attached them properly.  :)

I hate reading T&C but just did so and all is ok.

Now have to borrow the book from library and convert again and take photo.

Hope I win it!! ;D

I think I'll give this a go!  Just gotta go through and do a proper conversion rather than just me usual estimation!

I went to go check out the 'baby and toddler food' section to see what's already there and I can't actually see that section at all.  Am I missing something?

Is this the list you were looking for,  AliRo?

Good luck!

Ps. Corrected URL - thank you, AliRo.

yep, that's the one, thanks! (although, there's a .au in there as well)

There are a grand total of 7 dishes in there at the moment!  I can see why they're doing a comp to get some more recipes in there!

I've been thinking about this all morning - but the only thing I can come up with is as CP suggested . . . just blitz the meal you've made for the family . . or pureed fruit or vegetables . . etc . . will have a look at the RC site to see what they're already suggesting there.  . . .

don't forget it's for toddlers as well as babies.  Up to 5 years they've said.  I'm thinking along the lines of things that you can hide vegies in!

Dizzygirl, was it you that posted about the baked bean cup thingos in the lunch thread?  I think that would be a great toddler recipe.

Bascially just think of anything that you might serve at a kids party or something your own kids enjoy (or enjoyed, if your kids are older)

Oh dear, must stop giving help to others otherwise I'll never win!  :D

Yes Aliro, that baked bena case is my recipe. I entered into an Additive Free lunchbox ideas book competition and won with that one. I would feel funny entering it again.

I've uploaded my recipe!

Trying to think of any more recipes I could enter now to give myself a better chance.

Do you think if my recipe gets lots of views and comments that the judges might look more favourably at my recipe?  If so, please feel free to make some (positive  ;)) comments  :-*

HO said they would announce the winner on the 14th - still no sign of a winner.  Someone asked on facebook and the answer was that they had so many entries, it was taking them longer than expected.  I thought they would have expected quite a few entries - recipe competitions are always popular and the prize was really good.  Oh well, we sit and wait! :-\

I ended up thinking of 3 recipes in the last 24 hours - my poor family had to endure a massive cookfest and taste testing my ideas!!

Yeah, I was the person who asked on facebook.  I think it's pretty slack of them to be honest.  What did they expect?  A dozen entries?  If you run a comp and specify an end date, then you should stick to that end date.

Obviously the comp had it's desired effect as they now have about 6 or so pages of baby and toddler food recipes, instead of the 7 that they had to start with!

Good on you for asking!  I am not on Facebook, so spent all day on the 14th asking my husband to check, then I just gave up!  I can't believe noone asked before you.  The response you got indicated to me that it would be the next day ("soon"  I would say if your competition is already 2 days over, should mean tomorrow), but here it is 4 days after it was promised and still no winner.

When I looked at all the entries, I did wonder how on earth they could judge it.  There were no guidelines as to what recipes would be judged by and the differences between a pea and broccoli mash and broccoli nuggets (or chicken skewers  ;) ) is huge - how on earth can you compare them.

I will laugh if a mash recipe wins  ???

I agree.  When I looked through all the recipes I thought yours were great entries and giving me some good competition  ;)  But yeah, a mash recipe is a bit rediculous, however the category on the website is stated as 'baby food' not baby AND toddler food, so it may very well be a mash recipe!

That is why I didn't enter until the last day. I only read the rules two days before the comp ended and it said for ages 0-5. I have a 2, 4 and 5 year old, so anything we eat regularly would suit. That is why I put in those 3 - we eat them lots. I just needed to write them down as recipes as I usually just make them up.

I find it very unprofessional to give a prize date and not stick to it. At least a message could be put up saying    that the time has been extended and the new date is ........

Here if you buy a raffle ticket at the shopping centre and it isn't drawn on the date specified they have to publish the new date.

Someone else has asked about the comp on the facebook page and this was their answer

'Our recipe development team are testing the recipes and we will be announcing today!'

So I guess we'll see!  At least its good to know though that they're actually testing the recipes

That is a load of BS I say. They didn't even test the recipes for the Devil cookbook. Just slack . They should have given The ending date then a later date for announcing the winner. I wonder if Grace is gunna eat the baby food to test the flavour.  That would be good.

All they wanted is to draw suckers to the web site to increase the traffic and steal your recipes.

I'm glad they are testing the recipes (if that is in fact what they are doing), but how on earth did they think they were honestly going to do that given the original dates??

Gert - you sound very cynical about it all.  Is that from first hand experience?  I have never entered a competition before, are they always this bad?

I don't mind my recipes being "stolen" really.  I don't have any other outlet for them and so many of them just stay in my head or on my computer and have no reason for getting out and about.  If someone else loves my recipes, that's great.  I can't think of a way to earn money from them, so if I win a comp, all the better.

I do find their competitions a bit strange sometimes - what you can and can't enter; how they announce the winner (facebook?? what if you aren't on facebook?); the timing.

and I say again.....we continue to wait :P

Let's just say pippa that I would question everything HO says they do. If you want to think they are going to test every baby food recipe three times which, is the mimimun standard in the food world, then go  ahead.

You might find an outlet for your talents by creating your own blog. Not difficult and  great to share. Of course  you can always share here. When we use  others recipes  we always acknowledge the author. That is a polite thing to do.

Often contests on FB are designed to gather information about the person who enters. Sometimes they are just to generate traffic to their sites. The more traffic the more they can charge for ads.  also it is a good way for HO to then be able to go to your FB page and watch what you are doing and saying. This is why a lot of consultants are not on FB or have secured their FB pages though not always successfully.

Sometimes people like Tenina  and Helene at superkitchenmachine.com  have contests or giveaways to give something back to loyal fans. These  are always fun, fast and honest.

A company like Voerwork is unlikely to give anything away for no return?

A company like Voerwork is unlikely to give anything away for no return?

I figured that the reason for the comp was to get some more recipes under the baby food banner as they had next to no recipes on there.  If a potential tmx buyer was a mum with a baby or toddler and told how great the tmx was for stuff like that, then went to website and saw nothing there, it may put them off buying.

Hahaha! Someone just posted a comment under my recipe about how unhealthy it is to be serving toddlers cheese all the time!  Um, anyone with half a brain knows not to serve cheese for breakfast lunch and dinner, but it certainly comes in handy when trying to get them to eat certain vegies.

Here's the direct quote

Quote
Why does just about every toddler recipe contain cheese?  This is the flavour that the kids are tasting and then get used to eating.  Eating cheese is not a healthy option.  Toddler food can be made tasty, appealing and nutritious without having to resort to adding cheese to everything

I especially love the bit about 'cheese is not a healthy option'!  Um, like everything we eat, it's all good in moderation.

Do you think I should bother making a reply comment?

Absolutely not. That is the difference between this forum and that.  We are all fairly tolerant here and accept that mothers are pretty much the most intelligent  people to  manage the  diets of their family. We don't judge or point fingers here.

When you encounter  people like that I find it is best to not give  them a voice. You have no need to respond to ill informed or just plain dumb people.

There is no point in engaging with people who have a closed mind. No point at all.

You have a point there - cheese is not "good" for you, but it is also not "bad" for you either.  Research on toddlers and eating has shown firstly that toddlers are fussy and can be very difficult to feed causing stress for parents, which in turns makes toddlers even more fussy and even present with food refusal.  The research also indicates that the factor that limits a child's later food preferences is actually the fact that they are not exposed to many different foods consistently over the toddler years.  With that in mind, using cheese (or any other food for that matter) as a buffer to introducing foods that have been previously rejected means that you are keeping those food in the child's repertoire and can later offer them with less cheese, in a different form or with no cheese at all.  Feel free to PM me if you would like the references to those articles.  Thanks for making the point.  Pippa

Ditto.  I am a bad, bad Grandma - my GS loves cheese and as it is his preferred snack that's what he gets ;D

I think that was a great reply Pippa!

And congratulations on having your recipe as recipe of the day!  I reckon you were a close contender for winning the baby food competition ;)

Well done AliRo & Pippa!

I'm sorry but when did the fun police outlaw cheese? I have no kids & probably shouldn't comment, but it's cheese!! I could understand if it was coke, or sugar, or a lot of the crap that gets fed to kids these days, but surely a bit of cheese is ok?

Sorry Gert I seem to have borrowed your soap box!

There are a lot of holier than thou parents around on the internet.  Apparently yoghurt and sultanas are a no-no too because they contain so much sugar  :-))

Basically, if cheese and tomato sauce didn't exist, along with dessert bribery, my toddler DD wouldn't be eating a whole lot!

AllRo my Pre Schooler also refuses to eat anything without sauce.

Well done pippa.

I can remember DD only ever wanted to eat peanut butter, toast and apples. I was frantic until the darling clinic sister said there was no way she would die living on that. Imagine no cheese, yoghurt or sultanas. These children won't eat these things as adults. I have proof. My DH grew up not knowing dried fruits existed. ( his parents came to Australia after the war)  it has taken me 40 years to have him eat sultanas and others dried fruits.

Is chocolate a nutritious food for kids ? I have a chocolate addicted husband and they take after their Dad in that respect ! Just a load of nonsense, everything in moderation.

Our family GP was telling me (he's about latish 50's) when he was a kid all he would eat was potatoes because he hated his Mum's cooking ! He said back then people lived on egg and chips for dinner and lots of greasy food ! When you know better, you do better. But he said, can't have done me any harm living on potatoes, I'm still here !! I'm sure kids these days eat healthier than generations past !

He is quite a character our GP. If you tell him your arm hurts when you put it in the air, his response, well don't put your arm in the air !

The thing is cheese actually has opiates in it and is mildly addictive.  I love cheese and have been dairy free twice in the last 3 years (due to intolerant babies) and both times have been grumpy and had headaches at about day 3.  I realised that it was withdrawal from the opiates in cheese!  There is also alot of dubious research/facts making us believe that dairy is a good source of calcium which is why we think we are "supposed" to feed our children yoghurt, cheese and make them drink milk.  Dairy is actually a really poor source of usable calcium and one we can actually do without!  This is not a fact that the dairy industry wants us to know, so they use the media to make sure we hear their voice louder.  In the US, the government is actually trying to rewrite the food pyramid, but they are being bombarded by all the industries wanting their foods on top.  They aren't using research at all, just who has the most money, but they can't redraw the pyramid because they are upsetting major funding bodies.  Despite this, it is actually all foods in moderation that we need to promote.  Again, there is an idea that by giving children control over their food choices (well within reason of course) actually improves their eating and also teaches them long term lessons about feeling full, knowing when to stop etc.  If we constantly tell our children when they have had enough lollies, they never learn for themselves, the same for always making them finish everything on their plate and (sorry AliRo) bribing with dessert only makes children learn to like dessert, not the food you made them eat to get the dessert.  Have loads of research and great books worth reading, but it is probably way off topic now from the competition.  Am happy to answer more on fussy eating if you want to PM me.  Cheers - Pippa

Congratulations AliRo on winning the second bowl and blade set... It's made my life much easier... hopefully it'll do the same for you too!!

Pippa - fascinating stuff... I'd love to hear more about this... separate thread perhaps... and should i open it by asking a question so you can reply??? alternatively happy to hear more via PM... my diet personally is poor and in too great a quantity (the visual evidence around my hips is overwhelming  :-)) )... but i'm hoping that i'm doing better by my children... and interestingly enough I talk constantly about food contents and choices (and always have, since they were tiny tots) such that now, despite really not liking/wanting something, they'll at least give it a go... (green gunge tonight - aka creamed spinach as per the UK cookbook)... and the sauteed beet leaves/stems that I posted on the recipe community site last month or Jun... again not interested but still tried a spoonful.

As a somewhat cheeky aside - the rather less than enthusing comment that was made about cheese sounds rather like a thread on here when someone asked for 'healthy' children's food and then was less than appreciative with the responses given... if i remember correctly it was a very 'specific' definition of 'healthy' - possibly not what the mainstream might use...

thanks Pippa, that was really interesting.  As a vegetarian I am only too aware of the multitude of food groups that offer calcium, iron etc etc that are not mainstream or not heavily promoted.  I hadn't done much reading about cheese though so that was interesting to read about the opiates.  Do all cheeses have them?  As in, is it an essential component in making cheese?  Would be interested to know if you bought a non mass produced cheese whether they would be the same.

Despite my claims earlier about cheese, tomato sauce and dessert, I do exaggerate a bit with that.  I know full well that none of these things are good long term as an everyday occurence to promote well rounded eating habits.  As far as toddlers go she's quite a good eater, but as we know with toddlers, there are those days, and on those days it's just not worth the battle!

Sure Gillian - open a thread if it fits here, but alternatively, if it is way too off topic (??mods??) I think I can group PM, so people would need to PM me first if interested.  Wait and see if there is much other interest or if a moderator ahs an opinion as to the best way to do this.  Talk soon

It is not added in cheese making, it occurs during the process of separating the whey from the casein.  This concentrates the opiate that is (I think) in milk as well, into casomorphin.  So cheese made in your own kitchen with nothing but milk and rennet, will produce the same thing.  Really really interesting stuff.  I LOVE dairy, hence the withdrawal symptoms when I went cold turkey.
